I think you can ask your place of work to defer the first time. I did but had to do service the following year. I attended court a few times but was not chosen to be on the jury so kept as a reserve. |

With it, it depends on the case you get given...could be something simple like two idiots fighting or it could be something more serious.
You are told what you are getting before going into court and if you are given something like a murder you are given support |

"Yep, two weeks of sitting around while cases got deferred ,pleaded out or cancelled. Never heard a case "
Yes, this is the danger - I spent two weeks indoors, reading mostly, waiting to be called, waiting for lunch, waiting to go home.
We 'heard' three cases.
1/ called off
2/ called off as we were about to enter the court room
3/ final one we acquitted on
The wheels of justice grind exceedingly slow it seems |

It's a lot of sitting around and doung nothing. Treat it like a social.
You may not even be chosen as part of a jury on a case.
Did it a few years ago and it was ok! Nothing scary |

I loved it.
There was a good balance of men and women in the case that I sat on, and it was noted by the other jurors too. Equal numbers of male/female barristers, bailiffs and support staff, which was nice and would certainly have inspired any one interested in the legal profession to go into the field.
The downside was that it was a long case. There's also a lot of waiting around. I downloaded a couple of episodes from boxsets onto my ipod player. I got up to date with Madmen and Benidorm. And did a lot of crocheting.... |

Yes. Sat in on 2 cases. 1 was a brawl between 2 men. Another was a bigger case, was in the newspapers, and worries me still. A mans life was changed with our decisions.
But others there didn't even get called. 2 weeks and just say in s waiting room. |

a quandary, could you change my mind? |
I have done this a couple of times now, had to sit through a few cases, ones i remember the most ; importation of drugs, theft. It was very interesting, but my faith in the legal system is in complete shatters.
The glaring gaps in information (for what ever reason)
Should we have 'professional juries' in some ways I do think Yes we should!
Take a book / mints, something to possibly keep yourself awake.
Good luck OP |

"Done it twice. Sadly, it completely destroyed my faith in the English judicial system."
What makes you say that?
Not that I have any faith myself, just interested in your experience |

If you don't want to do it when you get there tell em you don't want to do any ethnic or gay cases. Make it clear you will make up your mind on day one.
Worked for two of my mates who would lose money in businesses they run.
One thing, My daughter wanted to be a barrister so we spent a week up the old Bailey. It's not like how you see it on TV. It's very technical and slow. Sleep well before. |

If you end up on a jury avoid the temptation to google the twat in the dock or anything related to the case.. failing to do that could mean you spend more time in a cell that the defendant!
There is a fine of £1000 if you don't turn up to jury duty... another way to look at that is you can pay £1000 not to turn up to jury duty.

Have been called to jury service twice and thankfully have avoided on both occasions. I know I'd be hopeless as a juror, agreeing with both sides!
First time was due to being married to a police officer who might have known the accused and second was having my own business, so not possible to leave unattended.
I believe you are only permitted to refuse twice, but as I no longer reside in UK there won't be a third request.
Hope you enjoy the experience OP

I hear it's very boring, unless you get a case you can't really talk about.
I'd like to do it, but I don't think I'll ever get a letter asking me to do it |

Yes I've done it, one alleged drug dealer and one rape/sexual assault case. The justice system left me scarred and I had to seek advice from the Samaritans afterwards who were brilliant. It is interesting to see the workings of the law but can leave it's mark on you personally as you're not allowed to discuss cases outside the deliberation room with anyone. Good luck I hope you get a case that isn't too bad. |

Nothing to be daunted about.
There's a lot of sitting around to start with, so take a book
I eventually ended up on a murder trial, that lasted quite as while, but it was a privelege to serve |
