I tend do grow things that are expensive to buy in the shops. I wouldnt get a good enough yeild of corn which is relatively cheap to buy and I wouldnt eat a squash more than once a month and they take up a huge amount of space. I wouldn't grow peas because birds eye are superior to anything you can grow yourself re vitamin content.
Its best to plan the garden by what you eat and how frequently you eat it. What is the use of two rows of radishes when you only serve three per per person per salad? Same as lettuce. You should avoid a glut. One courgette will produce pounds of the stuff yet you only use one per recipe tops.
Staples like onions and leeks are cheaper to grow and take up less space. Carrots are nice grown in pots to 'baby size' for a treat and a change to bog standard ones. Chillies and tomatoes can be stored well or frozen as sauces. Pak choi and kale have a long season and are excellent staples. Beets the same.
I made the mistake of growing acres of stuff I couldnt get rid of at first. Its only natural to get the growing bug then watch the majority of it go to seed. |

This is very true!
I only grow a couple of rows of early potatoes because I`m a sucker for new spuds out of the garden. I don`t grow main crop because they get eaten by slugs and it`s a lot of graft otherwise. Plus, since I had my ticker problems, digging gets a bit too much! Then there`s the rabbits and deer getting in and eating the onion foliage off. |
