Birmingham

So,I was out and about yesterday when I stumbled upon a young lady sat outside the train station. She looked rather forlorn and had no shoes on. She asked me for some money. I said no but I did pop into Primark and buy her a smashing pair of flip flops. I went back to the station and presented them to her and she told me to "fuck off!"

Anyway, I have a delightful pair of flip flops size 5/6 in lilac. Never worn. Who will make me an offer?

You can pay in installments if you like?

Menston near Ilkley

They obviously would have spoiled the image she wanted to portray of someone needy.

That was a lovely gesture.

My daughter is forever wanting to by food for people she sees on the street when were out. So we always ask for anything she doesn't eat to be parceled up, or we buy something extra.

I help run a street kitchen/clothes drive on a Monday night. They can be incredibly specific in what they want and not shy about being unhappy with the selection. Beggars can be choosers!

Something similar happened to a female relative. A bedraggled lady approached her asking for money to buy some food so she offered to buy her a sandwich. The reply was "Fuck off I want the money"

Probably needed the bus fare to get back to her 10 bed mansion

The whole thing is a minefield,,it's easier to just give some money but even then someone will say ''but they'll only use it for drugs''.

I once offered a guy a banana,he'd said he was hungry and it was all I happened to have,,,,he told me he didn't like bananas (fair enough,I suppose,at least he didn't tell me to F off).

On a freezing day I went into a ''well known high street bakery'' to buy a guy a hot sausage roll and a coffee,,they refused to serve me because they knew I was buying for this guy (outrageous),,,I went elsewhere and got him a cream bun as well.

I went home and filled a bag with loads of warm clothes, gloves, socks,a wooly hat and some blankets (all spares,,,it was so cold that I had a massive conscience attack after seeing this guy on the streets) and went looking for him,,,I couldn't find him so I gave the stuff to two young men crouched in a doorway eating jam tarts,,,,they were highly offended that I'd assumed they were homeless (they bloomin well looked like it) but accepted the bag of stuff anyway,,,,they probably just sold it to buy drugs.

In future I'll just throw them a pound and carry on ignoring them like a lot of people do.

Not the same, but a story about homeless people. I and my then boyfriend were in Glasgow for the weekend. There was a massive hill from our hotel up to the city centre and as we were both wheelchair users we were really struggling to get up it. Two homeless guys asked if we'd like a push, we said yes please and they got us up there, laughing and joking. Brilliant guys. We gave them cash, but they refused to take it. Saw them later on and got introduced to their friends, it was lovely. Really humbling.

Quite often people begging are not actually homeless and want the money for booze, fags or drugs. I would give a drink, sandwich or pie but not money.
