I had a mirena coil until I was 57 having become pregnant at 49 I refused to take any chances and the doctor agreed. They recommend continuing contraception for one year after your last period. Don't let your doctor talk you out of it.

Having spoken to my gynaegologist who said that she had a patient of 62 who still had regular periods I think it would be wise to have another coil.

Well, excuse the pun but I guess you will be the one holding the baby, not the doc who doesn't want to replace the coil.

We absolutely do not wish to have more children, we have enough between us.

I had the snip so it's a non issue for us, but I can understand is a mine field for many. Good luck with your decision.

you dont need contraception after a year or two after your last period because you cant get pregnant, i think its just a year actually.

I had mine replaced recently which will take me to 62 before it has to come out. You can have a blood test to determine if you are still ovulating or if you have started the menopause xx

You dont have to worry then, surely the doctor must know.

I had the coil removed earlier this year and didn't want it refitted even though that's why they suggested.

So I'm now on the mini pill, seems okay so far

Before they refitted this one they were reluctant to do so but then when I started getting symptoms of bleeding again that's when they refitted and this one will certainly take me over the whole menopause

If you are not having periods you may not know when it ends. Unless of course you have lots of symptoms of the menopause, I didn't have any obvious symptoms.

Is there a reason why he said you can't have it? If not I would insist if you are happy with that contraception otherwise I would hazard a guess you would still need to use something else.

It's the cost. When I had my first one the doctor told me the cost and I think it was more than £200 and that's about 8 years ago, she said they're reluctant to remove them if you're unhappy with it after a short time due to that so I guess they're reluctant to put them in if they can convince you to finance your own contraception.

£200 to fit a coil i think is minimal to the cost of the fall out if i was to get pregnant
