Ok, what age do you think your son or daughter should have their own phone, I say year 7, which is when, in my opinion, will be the first time in their young lives that they I'll be without a parent or guardian at some point during the day (journey to and from school mainly), our 5 year old daughter has just told me one of her classmates has one 
Surely they don't need one at that age? |

Maybe from 10 upwards ?
All depends how they use it, Playing games or for when they are staying at friends or other family members etc
My 4 year old niece has a Ipad its full of educational games which she uses when she is in the car or to keep her amused/quiet in restaurants etc |

I agree, our kids had their first phones at the start of year 7. Mainly because they would now be going to school independently but also so they could keep in touch with old friends who were going to different schools. They definitely didn't 'need' one before then and it actually worried me when they first got one as it could make them a target for mugging etc - that's my reason for them not having the latest iPhone and I'm sticking to it  |

my son got his when he started secondary school - daughter when she was 10 so a few months earlier as me and their dad split up and it was so she could contact either one of us - dont think they need one any earlier than that |

Seeing kids so young these days doc smart phones is shocking.
I know times and technology have changed BUT, seriously 5, 6,7,8,9 even 10 year old is too young in my view.
My son didn't have one until after he was 13 years old.
When most of us were younger mobiles were not even around and we coped fine.
Just my opinion |

no kid, but i deal a lot with phones - between 7 or 8, and usually an old hand me down. really good to have a method where you can monitor the kids, but at the same time leave them free to do what they will do on phones (play games, texts mates, etc)
to me the worst thing you can do is give them a handset and lock it down so they can't even do kid stuff on it - kids are smart and they will find workarounds (i once installed a keylogger on the home computer to get at passwords and stuff)

I got mine the summer before I started Year 7 - my mum let me go down to the beach alone with my friends that summer, so it makes sense. I had the naffest phone for two & a half years, then upgraded to a 3310...!
I don't think children should have a mobile phone until they understand the value of money. |

The worrying thing is Mobile phones haven't really be in use for more then 30 years, No one knows the long term effect it will have on brain activity for say a child who starts using them at say 10 year old |

Both mine were 9 but if I'm honest my daughter just uses hers for the apps and social media and not actually as it was intended for. a PHONE
They have both smashed their screens and lost them also. I'm forever ringing my son who's 12 only to hear it ringing upstairs as he never takes it out as its not the newest model!!! It's a iphone4+ ???? my daughter has the 5c and my niece who's two has the iPhone 5s!!! Yes she's 2!! But only for watching films on when she's sleepy x |

My eldest is coming up 13 and doesn't have one neither does he want one and he's probably in the minority of not having one out of his friends.
I managed to get through school without needing one as did all of my peers, so we'll be holding off buying him one for a bit longer. |
