My mind often goes off on a tangent and I ponder on silly things. Today my pondering tangent is why are pot holes in the road called pot holes. They're not pots or holes , and for that matter, why is pot holing called pot holing?

According to Google it's from a time when potters couldn't afford clay,so dug into the paths and stole it leaving an unsightly hole. Perfect for filling with hot chocolate though. |

Pot holing or spelunking/ speleological exploration is so named after the northern colloquialism of Pot for a cave.
This will have similarly carried over to those failures in metalled tarmac  |

I asked a friend Tall and Very Handsome not google he say "Gay men (George Michael for example) having sex in those Victorian/Edwardian cottage/chalet style toilets found in public parks.". George was uncovered doing it on Hampstead Heath some years ago when the term came into more mainstream parlance. |
