Got told this tip a few years ago and it does work. With how good loft insulation is these days heat is now being trapped inside the house much more eficently which in this hot weather can be a killer to sleep in.
Simple solution if you have one open your loft hatch. It will allow the hot air to escape past the insulation lowering the temperature.
If you dont have a loft or loft hatch sorry you will need to take a hammer to the ceiling. |

"I don't have an opening window in my bedroom. Now imagine that in this heat !
If your renting fella get onto your landlord that's illegal."
My bedroom window is into another room, so even if the window did open, I'd only end up in another room |

Out of interest, what are the fire regs for a rented property ?
I rent a one bed flat above a shop so the only exit door is at the back of the property.
The living room (at the front of the property) has windows that only open at the top and the bathroom window is the same.
So the only way out is through the back door.
I've been here 10 years and never had issues with insurance etc
Despite its unconventional layout, it is a lovely flat with massive rooms - much nicer than many purpose built new builds I've been in |

You would have to smash a window to get out. That doesn't sound safe.
I can't open my loft hatch, the bogeyman lives up there |

Wow I'd seriously look into that mate every upstairs room should have a window to the outside to use as an emergency escape. |

Open upstairs Windows and close upstairs curtains to prevent radiant heat. Admittedly my house was 28degrees upstairs and 24 downstairs today with windows and bi fold doors open. I even started to burn my feet on the patio. |

My daughter lives in a brand new eco efficient, green living apartment (we call it a flat). It's toasty in winter but in hot weather her lounge/open kitchen is a sauna. Even with the balcony doors and kitchen window wide open it's hot,and the millions of flying things can get in. |

Modern houses have little useable thermal mass to store heat, so heat up quickly on heat waves. This is going to be an increasing problem as temperatures increase. |

Over the rainbow, under the bridge |
"Modern houses have little useable thermal mass to store heat, so heat up quickly on heat waves. This is going to be an increasing problem as temperatures increase. "
Mine's a 1930s semi. Usually nice and cool in the summer if I open enough windows.
My brother's house is modern and bloody roasting. |

I rest my case. Heavy masonry, externally insulated, with a wet plaster internal finish, is best. |
