We often see threads about which accents get you going, but this is a thread for the accents that make your sex drive disappear!

For me, I can't take American southern accents. I just can't stand them.

What about you? Which accent(s) turn you off?

Quite like southern american accents myself :P possibly since they evoke fond memories of my younger days, first cherry I ever popped was a 19 year old farm girl from Arkansas.

Turn offs - Strange one this. Scouse. But only on women. On men it's massively endearing and a plus point. On girls it's somehow common and coarse. Not that I'd rule out a Scouse lass at all, just that the accent would be a negative point.

Not a massive fan of full on cockneys either. Don't mind southern, had a lovely ex from Bracknell who sounded quite nice but I can't be doing with get aaaahhht maaaa pub!!!

I understand what you're saying but reality is that people can get offended by everything and anything. You can't eliminate that factor especially on open forums. That being said apologies to middle eastern people, you beautiful lot

I get what you're saying. Like I said, I wasn't really thinking about that when I started the thread.

I did change my accent, though. I got speech classes when I was younger because I was unintelligible. Maybe that's why I'm not bothered if someone says they don't like my accent. I dunno.

I also like 'well spoken' guys as long as they aren't exaggerated like a spluttering constipated cow (aka Prince Charles!) ..I can say that I think as I doubt he is on FAB to be offended lol!!!

Not so much an accent but a manner of speaking which turns me off is straight guys who sound a bit camp.

You're forgiven, and yes the Scouse accent does vary depending where about in Liverpool you're from, I'd class myself as soft Scouse, being from the south of the city, plus influences around me have caused me to lose my accent even further.

I don't want to be mean an maybe I only find it annoying cos I dated a guy from this particular place and he was quite dopey. It's the Hull accent, the vowels all sound the same they don't anounciate their words properly.

Loads of people probably find my accent annoying as well so meh!

Agreed. Thankfully I went away to Uni so lost it. only comes out when I'm angry but when I go home to see family and hear the accent it makes me cringe and laugh.

Question I thought Cornwall accent was fine until recently the advert on the tv regarding cornish ice cream,that was the only 2 words I could understand, Does everyone sound like that,otherwise I'm fine with accents I tend to be an acute listener the worst thing about me is im fine with my accent, then I talk faster than I should at times

That advert was in Cornish not English. I like Cornish; it belongs to the same Celtic language family as Breton and Welsh.

Really winds us up also, sounds put on and exaggerated, no one talks like that unless (guessing) they decide they want to start talking like that, yuk!

Not keen on Aussie accents, it's all those wining sounds with what seems every single word.

Throbbin' is quite right. I'm a southern Scouser and I don't sound anything like a north ender. Their accent is harsher I think. Also, don't mistake the patois used by scallies on TV interviews for Scouse. Nobody I know says 'kidda', 'lid' or 'la'.

You are so right. And that is so true. It's usually the wannabe Scousers [like Bishop - Runcorn which is in Cheshire and Manchester] who have the strongest of what they think is a Scouse accent.

Personally I'd treat everyone on an individual basis and accent would figure quite low. If people were offended by our accent I'm sure they wouldn't have the personality to capture our attention in the first place. Any accent is insignificant if the overall attraction is there.

Ah, ok, well if you travel to the south of liverpool anytime you will notice a difference in the accent, I work in the north end, litherland, and the difference in accent from the south is extremely noticeable.

The differences in accent that everyone is attempting to argue about don't depend if you are from the 'north' of liverpool or the 'south' ..... Why has no one mentioned the 'east' or the 'west' ? or the City Centre come to that.

The differences in accent are cultural. Historically based on class and education.

They are more hazy now than in the past since those dastardly working class were allowed some social mobility.

And Hightown ? Liverpool ? Scousers ? They'd choke on their fookin couscous if they thought they had to bear that label.

Really? I'm from Liverpool, I know people from every single part of the city and its not about where you're from its about the circles you mix in. A kid from Speke, Fazak, dodge or the bullring can sound exactly the same, there's no north/south divide. Same can apply to people that attend merchants or the college

And you're quite right of course. There appears to be confusion over Liverpool, the city and Merseyside, the county. Go east a few miles and you'll be in territory formerly belonging to Lancashire and Cheshire. If you go north you are in what used to be West Lancs (Southport still has a Preston postcode I think). Go west (cue for a song) and you're in/on the Wirral where they have Chester postcodes. A big old mix of influences on accent and dialect.

For those who claim to hate Birmingham accents, can you make sure it's genuine Brummie you dislike and not Black Country which everyone assumes its Birmingham .... But ISN'T

are you just encompassing everywhere in the UK that's above you ?

I think more than an accent it's about understanding people , so any that are really strong.

Also using local dialects can make things harder but I'd rather than then the continuous "erm"

I get what you're saying, Granny, but I don't agree. it is possible for some people to like language for the sake of it, and that is lovely. But it is possible, with plenty of exposure and experience, to simply not like a sound - the same way you can not like a smell.

Watch a show called "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" and then tell me that is an accent you would be happy to listen to for the rest of your life.

I don't think there is anything wrong with disliking an accent, or even a language for that matter. It can show an awareness of the beauty that can be made with sound. I had a latin teacher who once told us he hated the Enlgish word "kiss" because it was such a harsh way of saying something beautiful (hard K followed by a hard S sound). Is that a lack of experience, too?

Anyway, I just find different people's attention to language interesting. I've had plenty of British people tell me they can't stand American accents. I don't mind them telling me. It is interesting to hear why they don't like it - what sounds bother them, etc.

You seem very passionate about claiming your roots as a scouser, and as you've seen from a lot of comments on this thread, we're not liked much.

Oh ok so in other words I can't be proud of where I'm from because a percentage of people don't like the accent? So they don't like me?

And I've lived in fazakerkey 20 years!!

Be proud of where your from, just make sure you know where you're from first, so now you live in Fazakerly or you done 20 years there then moved to Knowsley?
