Britain has lost nearly 75% of its Cuckoo population over the last 25 yrs reports say.
I used to live in a house that backed on to woods and remember them calling for their mate in a tree nearby.
What other wildlife do you remember as a kid which is disappearing? |

How often do you see a Song Thrush? "
For me if your like the outdoors and the countryside you will notice things that can easily be missed otherwise, last week in the garden I was fortunate enough to see and hear a song thrush breaking snails up to feed 3 fledged youngsters alongside on the path its the first time in well over 25 years I,ve witnessed "anything" similar with this species in the garden as the song thrush,s numbers slumbed as you will know in the last few decades, its most ly being there at the time to witness things even looking up long enough in the sky you,ll see birds that you won,t see everyday to me there are certain things I can,t explain but it seems to lift my spirits and I,m sure it enriches yer soul if you love these things. |

The cuckoos get hunted in Africa, hunted on migration and then when they get here there's no where to rob a nest because their habitats gone!
Things are in place to sort it but it's going to take time and a lot of education in Africa and Malta for example to get them to stop hunting.
Turtle Doves and Hen Harriers, and my favourite bird Bullfinch are what I miss from childhood.

Used to see a lot more jays than I do now, and lapwings but growing up in the countryside I was spoilt. On the flip side I see a lot of geese and ducks now, the odd swan and I've even seen a kingfisher in the city. |

Yeah, heard about that. It's a shame, but as you say it can be a long process to educate people about the migration of birds and what they actually bring to the local community while they are there |

I've had the opposite happen. In recent years I've seen,for the first time ever,a wren and a yellow tailed bird, I think is a lapwing,in my garden. Oh and a pair of jays local to me,never had them around here before. |

Nowadays, not so many though "
Don't fret,we have thousands of them around here. Sparrows are apparently declining,I keep my holly tree large so they have a safe place to live. |

I shared a house at Uni with a guy that was doing a PhD in 'Starling Spotting'
Apparently its important to know the distribution & numbers of the starling population in certain areas as its indicative of other trends in weather/environment. |

Monitoring swifts before they go back to their wintering quarters this month as been on going for some time in derbyshire I love to see them in the summer sky their breeding sites have all but gone in some areas for a bird that can breed and sleep on the wing I find that amazeing. |

How often do you see a Song Thrush? "
Rarely, sparrows are fewer than they used to be too there aren't as many butterflies either. It's good to see buzzards in the south east again though. |

most likely alder trees hopefully they should put up some new growth but time will tell even a bit of cover can create a habitat for small birds such as wrens etc. |
