Cardiff

Definitely go!

Over 150k Brits did it last year

Choose your itinerary and boat carefully you need to be sure your time on land and afloat are enjoyable

River cruises are really budget driven so make sure the product you use suits your needs e.g. Includes excursions (or not) etc

Choose your dates wisely. Rivers rise with heavy rainfall thereby making under bridge transit impossible similarly a hot dry season can see a drop in river water levels causing problem for boats

But it's a fantastic way to explore Europe travelling through the heart of many cities.

Apart from a day trip to calais in nov 79 (no Immigrants then) my mum and dad celebrated their ruby aniversary in june 1983 by organiseing a trip for themselves and some of the family on a cruise ship through our local paper which was called the diana and she had a sister ship which worked the same water ways as the ones we were on at the same time this was in germany we started in cologne on the rheine before we could slip off on to the mosel it was a marvelous trip it took two weeks we passed some of the black forest and a little bit of the Industrial heartland but we moored up every evening at places such as speyer and heidelberg, and koblenz where I bought a grey pot tankard with a transfer print of the old city on over a 33 year period I have d*unk more beer and lager out of that than any other vessel hahaha, at 25 my eyes were opened to how open and broad minded the germans were here with sex booths or picture booths and I did stray into a brothel at speyer the madam let me lick her nipples for 10 deutche mark it was a bloody site more for anything else then some of the staff came out with dildo,s the size of ponys haha I made my escape quick. It was a very scenic route I saw the materhorn and we arrived in baden baden in switzerland after a weeks travel during the first weeks travel we would go out during the day or night and discover the places we wanted to see there were some medievil castles along the way I remember one which was at pzalf it was high up on a rock outcrop over looking the river some engineering went into building that in the first world war there was a german bi plane (pardon the pun) which was called a pzalf no doubt came from the locality heidelberg was nice to old buildings etc then we came back the same way second week, the crew of our ship was dutch we use to have a spread at meal times of dutch cheeses and hams laid out in the dineing suite along with other goodies the captain and staff use to make sure everyone was happy.. when you sat down to dine you could see through the port holes the water level was just below.. but that was always standard when the boat was in the water.. it was 500 miles down to switzerland and back 1000 miles in all we travelled past the lloreli rock we used large locks which had large lumps of drift wood trapped alongside due to recent flood waters in all it was a marvelous experience.

Are you on the SAGA mailing list?

If yes, go; if no, stay.
