Somebody please explain FB please?

I've just joined FB &,set up a very basic profile as I'm not looking at using it as a communication tool as its main purpose. Immediately after setting this up I had a list saying these are people you may now, there were maybe a dozen names. To my amazement more than half of these are known to me ie friends neighbours even previous work colleagues, some appeared to be random folk.
What I'm curuous to know is how these people are being connected to me? Some people might want this but I find this creepy, I've also had friends invites from strangers why is this & is this what I should expect?
Thanks in advance for your help. |

By your phone number I would guess - if you put it on FB |

If you're logged in on your phone it scans contacts to see if they have a profile on there, and not necessarily saved contacts either. If you have an email from someone on your phone and they use that email address for their profile it can sometimes suggest them.
Clever eh? Haha |

It's voodoo.
Either that or clever macros. Looking up telephone numbers, friends, friends of friends, basically trawling your personal info and making links.
If they can do that, think what GCHQ are capable of! When you sign up to FB you effectively waive your rights to online privacy.. |

That's because of the way FB works, it has access to things you wouldn't imagine. It can compare numbers in your phone book against users on FB, similarly with email addresses.
For example, I have a girl off here on what's app, so I have her number in my phone but only saved by her first name. A few weeks after, she came up on FB as a suggestion to add as friend, could see her family, photos, statuses.
I use FB a lot and it doesn't really belong there me, I have nothing to hide. |

Welcome to the Internet, where you can find out pretty much anything if you know where to look.....
If you've got a big "online footprint" you'll be very easy to find.
Instagram, phone number, what's app, mutual friends. Everything links into Facebook now. |

"Oh and if you give your phone number out to meets on fab, be prepared to see some of your meets pop up on "people you may know" "
I've got a separate Fab phone for that very reason. Not just a pretty face..
(Actually not a pretty face) |

Ok thanks most of the people are contacts or ex contacts in my phone, although I don't recall adding my number, unsure how the emails could be linked.
Who are the randoms that appear on my list are they just randoms or connected to others maybe? I did have a more comprehensive profile maybe 5 or so years ago, but deleted it after getting messages & pokes from people mainly from school, who suddenly wanted to be my friend, some sort of Kudos thing I was told at the time. Will FB recognise me as having been a member before? |

Probably won't remember you.
The random people will be friends of people your friends with or know. |

Possibly if you've used the same email address to register.
The emails etc are only usually picked up if you're using your phone to access FB. It kind of scans your phone for as much contact data as it can find. And yes sometimes it'll just recommend a load of randoms too |
