I've run out of box sets to watch so I've started watching Gomorrah which is Italian with English subtitles. It's about the mafia and so far it's really good and after ten minutes or so you forget its foreign. Some of the best films I've seen have been subtitled, Pans Labrynth and Apocolypto spring to mind.

Am I missing any other films or shows that might have been overlooked due to being foreign or would you be put by it?

Night on Earth is a great film by Jim James which is partly in English but also has other languages too. Also recommend Amelie which is an amazing French film.

Thanks, I'll look I to them. There's a great film about a tower block run by gangsters, I think it's Venezuelan but I can't remember what it's called, one of the best fighting films I've ever seen.

Being a bit deaf - 'what?'- I often watch English films/TV with subtitles so a foreign film with them isn't any different to me. However I can't answer the OP as I'm not really a habitual TV/film viewer for the reasons above. Meh.

Another vote for the original Swedish/Danish version of The Bridge here, all three series have been truly excellent, intense, gripping and keep you guessing right to the end.

Another that I've not seen (despite it sitting on my DVD shelf for years!!) that xame highly recommended by someone who knows their stuff is a French film called Mesrine about the life and times of a French gangster.

Two recommendations from me:

1. Narcos - mix of English and subtitled Spanish, about Pablo Escobar. Brilliant. Netflix series.

Gomorrah was a stunning series. I was like a grittier Sopranos, with no unnecessary Hollywood glitz.

And as someone mentioned above, Meserine Part 1 & 2 could well be the best foreign crime films I've seen. Vincent Cassel was absolutely captivating and delivered a complete masterclass playing the lead.

Wasn't that, thinking about it a bit more there was a bank raid that went wrong, lots of double crossing and a shootout back at the hideout, then a cash handover in a quarry. It wasn't told in flashbacks so you couldn't be sure who trusted who, then there was a seen on a Mexican beach with the guy who's been shot dead in the quarry, the absence of chronalogicality left me bloody confused!

"

La Haine (French)"

That was one I was trying to think of- could remember the motorbike helmet scene but not the bloody name!

I've popped my head in the DVD cupboard as well and spotted another to suggest- well it's kind of two really.

Flags of our fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima. The same story told from the perspective of American troops (Flags- directed by Speilberg and not subtitled) and the Japanese army (letters- directed by Eastwood with subtitles). Both really good, although Eastwood is the better director in my opinion- and I'd suggest watching his film first as I think Flags will make more sense knowing the opposite side of the story? (I shall be taking this along for entertainment on one of my 12 hr shifts next week ??)

You are definately right, Letters from Iwo Jima is vastly superior to Flags of our Fathers..but just for the record, Clint Eastwood solo directed both pictures. Spielberg was the producer on one or both of the films.
