Wouldn't have ever have Virgin broadband (I know you are talking about TV) because they force you to use their router which they have unrestricted access too and can change at their will. This also means they have access to all connected devices in your home.

Sky BB isn't much better but you can get around having to use their router.

Simply switch the virgin router to modem only mode and put your own firewalled router in front of it. then they can't see past their router I can't be bothered with the TV package though.

Doesn't stop you plugging a firwall inbetween the Virgin router and your network and then turning off the firewall on their router. Stops them accessing your network and keeps the effect of their constant config changes on your internet access and network security.

At least that's what I used to do - these days I don't have any choice, no virgin cable to connect to. As for Sky's router, it is a pain in the posterior to remove as they also like to keep it locked down and make thier own config changes.

With all broadband kit you should NOT use the router provided for your WiFi or cabled lan (Local Area Network), doing that gives the broadband supplier and all their bored technicians full access to your network pc's phones etc.

The proper way to do it is buy your own router, set that up with firewall password, use it for WiFi and connect your PC's etc to it. then if possible switch the provided system to Modem Only mode and connect YOUR protected system to it. then they can't see what you have or what you store on it... as long as you don't put your porn in the cloud of course.

This is not only to protect you from your ISP but also vulnerabilities discovered in mass supplied routers are wide open to hackers. by doing your own thing you make life harder for them and generally they will go elsewhere.

Cost is not high these days and reliability is very good so you won't be worrying about repair bills.

Sky Q for us. Record 4 and watch a fifth, 35mb bb, 2 extra boxes with no dish cables which turn the wifi into hotspots so we can now get it at the bottom of the garden where we sit in summer and never had any issues. Very pleased with it

Virgins prices are a rip off. They are too expensive always had problems with the bill every month. Sky have better value for money and better coustomer service.

I'd rather not pay money to Sky but there are Sky channels I watch that aren't available on Virgin, and to get the rest of the ones I want means I'd need the most expensive Virgin TV package. That would cost me far more than Sky costs.

I have Virgin broadband though and that's great.

So are you saying i could buy my own super hub (virgin box thingy sat on my computer desk) wi fi and replace mine with theirs? But how does the connection then work for the internet that they provide for me and I pay for? Do I need to change my email address as I use what was blueyonder.

You don't replace theirs, you use their virgin box thingy to connect to the Internet, and you buy your own router with WiFi to connect between everything you own, and the virgin box thingy.

Think of it like having a porch, the postman can come into your porch to leave post on the side, but the inner door is locked. so only you can take the post into the house, if you gave the postman access to the front door, mostly he would leave the post in the hallway, but occasionally he may wander in and take a peek into your underwear drawer.

Had Sky for years. Went up and up. Ended up over £100. Called to see if they could do a deal, offered me 6 months half price movies (£7 off a month) looked at Virgin and looked cheaper overall but not currently providing in my area.

Ended up going for BT broadband with free BT TV and getting Kodi on my fire stick. Free sports and movies and box sets

Virgin for a few reasons.

1. It's not connected with Rupert Murdoch

2. We have fibre to the door. The slowest internet they offer in our area is 80Mbps

3. It works out cheaper than Sky for our needs

4. The "on demand" service is quicker as unlike Sky it does not download via your broadband

5. Greater bandwidth for HDTV and on demand compared to Sky, so better picture quality

6. The Samsung V+ box allows background dunbbing of recordings to external DVD while watching other TV or recorded material.

7. Broadband is highly reliable at least in our area.

Virgin do not force use of their router.

Though I currently do use theirs, for 14 years until April 2016 I used routers I bought and installed myself. Virgin engineers even commented that I knew my stuff and it was no problem.

"The customer service on Virgin is appalling. "

Been with Virgin for a long time and have only had one issue with Customer Service. I escalated it to Richard Branson by finding an address for him at Companies House. On his personal order we had half price TV/BB/phone for two years.

But mostly they are fine, if the person you call cannot help then ask to be put through to a manager.

Lots of streams though and Atlantic isn't worth the extortionate sky prices for me, maybe for others but me personally don't see the value in Sky anymore. Especially after they lost so much sport as well
