the mandela effect
Jump to: Newest in thread
A friend of mine was telling me about this yesterday and after looking it up I have to say its kinda blew my mind.
Mandela effect is a large group of people that remember things differently to how they are.
as some examples here a few quotes from movies that I always thought in my head was what was said.
snow white- "mirror mirror on the wall"
Apparently if you watch any version of snow white now even if you have an old vhs copy it is and always been "magic mirror on the wall"
Jaws- " we're going to need a bigger boat"
Go watch any version of jaws and he says "you're going to need a bigger boat"
Forrest gump- "life is like a box of chocolates"
It is now and always has been "life WAS like a box of chocolates"
Interview with a vampire was never called that, apparently its always been interview with THE vampire.
star wars- where darth vadar says " LUKE I am your father", if you go watch any version now its "No I am your father" (yet on you tube theres old clips of james earl jones who voiced vadar doing old interviews and saying when he read the script he was shocked when he had to say ""LUKE I am your father"
Yet apparently on no version was that line ever said.
Sticking to star wars does everyone remeber 3cp0 in the movies (even the early movies) being all gold, I sure so but nope apprently if you watch it now, even an old vhs copy he has always had one silver leg.
field of dreams- "if you build it they will come" is how ive always remembered it but that was apparently never the quote as it is now "if you build it HE will come".
Its not just movies, the lords prayer as a kid we always said "forgive us our trespasses aswe forgive those who treapass against us"
But go find any bible now if you can and read the lords prayer (I went and found one which was given to my brother and was dated 1975
from an uncle and it actual words now are "forgive us are debts as we forgive our debtors"
And from again apparently in no version of any bible will you see the words "forgive us are trespasses as we firgive those who treapass against us"
Now im only a day into researching this but I find it fascinating and there is lots of theorys out there why we remember things different from alternate realitys merging together to people mesing with time lines etc.
sorry for the long post i just found it all interesting.

"Is this the same as people who tell the same lie over and over again that they actually believe what they are saying is true? "
That was the gist of the radio show. It mentioned the American tv personality who claimed to have been shot down in a helicopter and said that he probably genuinely believed it had happened. |

"Who cares ?
People will misquote slightly when telling a story. They are able to keep the meaning/sentiment but not the exact word string.
Those listening pick up the version they hear. "
who cares?
Your a charmer arnt you.
forgive me for making a post that I thought was interesting as I'm sure many people remember those film quotes differently to what they are.
if you dont care or can't relate simply ignore and move onto another post.

Well said OP! Too may moaners on here. Your thread is interesting. James Cagney famously never said in any of his movies "You dirty rat!" Lol. |

There are different versions of the lord's prayer, depending on the translation.
I remember it as trespasses, because that's what we recited at my school and at the Anglican church where I sang in the choir.
I have seen and hear other versions.
Not sure what the whole thing has to do with Mandella though...?
Mis-quoting is not the same as mis-remembering. Many people mis-quote Shakespeare, but have never read or seen a play of his. |

Is there any evidence of this phenomenon where the meaning is significantly altered? |

why didn't you just post that instead of the "who cares" bit?
You are a regular poster and I've seen lots of threads where new posters don't feel welcome here in the forums and its because of attitudes like yours.
Theres so many threads I could go post in like the kiss fuck avoid ones for example and just post "who cares" but I dont because they dont interest me so I just ignore them.
if a certain thread doesn't interest you then just leave it instead of bringing negativity into it. |

google and you tube it...there is so many more examples and explanations.
im only a day into looking into it so its quite new to me but I find it fascinating.
Honestly go watch a few vids on it on you tube.
its crazy.
one guy has been reading the same bible for over 50 years and all of a sudden one day certain words had changed.
there is one verse about wine bottles but this guy swears that its never ever said wine bottles and it was wine skins and the words in his bible literally changed over night.
another verse somthing to do with a lion laying with a lamb but its no longer a lion, its now wolf lays with the lamb and this guy insists it was always a lion.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that for the majority of human existence, stories were passed down orally rather than via text? Maybe we're much more wired to remember what we hear than read |

Actually had a discussion at work about Dam Busters movie and when it's on I also watch it to see if the dog's name is changed or even if the scenes are deleted. |

I've no idea.
I wont use the bible ones as examples as I've never read one but those movie ones i swear have changed.
Everyone knows its mirror mirror on the wall but if you have a version of snow white at home no matter how old it will say magic mirror on the wall.
Just like i just watched old interviews on you tube of James earl jones saying in interviews his reaction to when he had to say the line Luke i am your father.
Its always been Luke i am your father as i remember it and I've seen it 20ish times in my life.
I put my DVD on earlier which I've had for years and omg. He doesn't say it.
He says no im your father.
Either i and millions others have gone crazy or something weird is happening. Lol
