Joshua Brown, the 40-year-old owner of a Tesla, was killed in Florida in early May after colliding with a truck when his brakes reportedly did not activate and the car collision system did not see the big white truck it pulled out into as it could not recognise the white truck from the clear sky

"Nothing is failsafe. So the guy didn't even try to put his foot on the brake? "
He was probably having a nap.
You know how it is when technology does everything for you. All he had to do was get in and start the engine.

"I never understand the desire of technologists to eliminate the human element"
At a guess because once the technology matures they'll be able to remove the most common cause of road accidents, human error. Lets face it we all believe at times we are more capible than we really are and hence people drive when thier too tired or with altered perceptio s from drugs (legal and illicit) or emotionally comprimised. Then of course theres my real pet hate those that think thier road stars but can't drive for toffee, who constantly forget to indicate, check for hazards, pay any attention to what is going on around them or understand that the highway code applies to them.
Sorry for the rant but there really are very few consistently good drivers about.
Oh and by the way I cant count myself in the good drivers category as I dont drive. I also don't count myself in the good rider category, but I try hard to be, as I know I'm failible and make my share of mistakes. |

The cameras on Mr Brown’s car had failed to distinguish the white side of a turning tractor trailer from a brightly lit sky and didn’t automatically activate its brakes, according to a government report obtained by the Associated Press.
Frank Baressi, 62, the driver of the truck said the Tesla driver was “playing Harry Potter on the TV screen” at the time of the crash and driving so quickly that “he went so fast through my trailer I didn’t see him.”
“It was still playing when he died and snapped a telephone pole a quarter mile down the road,” he said.
Tesla Motors Inc. said it is not possible to watch videos on the Model S touch screen and Mr Baressi acknowledged he couldn’t see the movie, he only heard it playing

Of course, well over three thousand people will have died in human driven cars on that same day, with many thousands more seriously injured. And on every other day too.
The sooner all cars are driverless, the better. |

The guy was a frequent poster of videos showing him paying no attention to the road, including sleeping. His selfish willingness to put others at extreme risk is beyond contempt. If only his family had meant more to him and he'd not been such a prick. I feel for the trucker who took off the car roof and killed him.
My car is pretty good at interpreting road activity but I'd prefer humans to be actively operating them.
Millions of trucker jobs are likely to disappear in coming years, as they become automated - just another huge blow against the working class. |

"Nothing is failsafe. So the guy didn't even try to put his foot on the brake? "
He was watching Harry potter at the time.
A tractor pulled out towing a trailer, the camera on the car couldn't see the trailer due to the colour of it. So it drove under the trailer, turning the car into a convertible and killing the driver in the process.
The trailer was the same Colour as the sky, so the camera didn't notice it. |

Remember it's already there in your car to differing degrees. We have ABS that pumps the brakes on and off to avoid locking up and skidding. Lots have DSC to automatically brake individual wheels to prevent under and over steer skids and spins.
This is a terrible accident, but does it mean advancing technology is automatically bad?
Those cars have covered millions of miles accident free driving. It would be interesting to compare the accient rate between 'normal' cars and these. |

Alternatively you could say that the only reason to invest in driverless trucks is if they are cheaper. If they are cheaper then the cost of haulage goes down which means that the prices of everyday goods transported by haulage will also go down. Deductions in the cost of living benefit the working class most of all.

All the safety features on modern cars cause complacency.
we should replace airbags with a spike coming out of the steering when and a device that cut the brakes when you got to close to the car in front.
I bet tailgating would stop over night.
seriously its drivers that cause accidents, |

There is no comparison! Driverless wins by a country mile. It's just luddites who will cite anecdotal examples to avoid looking at the bigger picture. Planes are largely automated now except for take off and landing, the technology works on trains... |

Tesla state that whilst the car is in control, the driver should remain fully aware and be prepared at any moment to take over, which is done by simple grabbing the steering wheel.
In my eyes, having to stay in control and fully aware of a car that drives itself makes the fact that the car drives itself pretty useless. Might as well be fully aware, in control, and actually driving..
Much like the Porsche Cayenne. Yes it's a 4x4 and designed to off-road, but are you actually going to off-road a Porsche?
Great concept. But utterly useless in practicality. |

Interestingly automation in Aircraft creates it's own new set of problems. The industry now recognises and builds systems that cater to the strengths of humans and machines working together.
The Heathrow BA777 double flame out is one example. |

Not in this case obviously, the driver could have easily prevented it though had he been paying attention. |

You can't beat German technology in my opinion.
It's a development error which has unfortunately taken a life.
I'm all for technology and I'm sure that Mercedes will probably win the march to the best car with driver aids but we should never allow a car to drive us at 100%.
This level of refinement and technology should only be introduced as an Active safety aid and only interfere once the driver gets it wrong. Not the other way around.
Sad story but actually made me laugh when I read the article |

Breaking news......That's not a car
They also run 4 minutes apart with various fail safes along the track with a guard who can stop it at any moment. |

" the cost of haulage are already down with wages heavily supressed over recent years costs are cut are far as they will go on average one road haulage firm is going under a week as they cannot compete with the big companys who are happy to take loads where they make as little as £1 profit |

And from the volume of problems i've seen here and reliability studies I'd say they are very advanced but not rugged enough. Personally I couldn't own one.
VW's immense resources couldn't pass tests so the resorted to cheat modes.
BMW timing chain issues abound at the moment.
