Sent me on a really expensive course today.... on " how to be a good receptionist"........ you think they might have done that 8 years ago when I joined the company... am I the only one to think it's a slap in the face for doing my job correctly?

Regular personal development is the difference between 40 years of experience and ONE years experience which is 40 years old...

Do you think they are just trying to tick the boxes, that they have offered staff opportunities to develop?

It's entirely a tickbox situation- if they wanted us to develop, they'd have sent us on proper courses......

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

There are occasions when the management do send you on the wrong course though or they don`t read what`s covered in the course. A couple of years ago, my manager sent three of us to Agricultural college to do a tractor driving course. I`ve been driving tractors since I was 13 (54 now!) and the other two had been driving them for about 5 - 10 years. The course was .... basic tracotr driving! I spent most of my time yarning with the instructor who no doubt thought he could have taken the week off and let me carry on! When I got back to work, my manager asked me if they`d been teaching us several rather skilled stuff to which I replied in the negative as it was after all the foundation course designed to teach people who had never sat on a tractor, let alone been driving one for nearly forty years like I have!

If nothing else todays course may have reinforced all the good things that you currently do in your present role

every now and then it doesnt do any harm for employers to ensure their employees are still "ticking the boxes"

sometimes a day away from the office interacting with others is just what the doctor ordered

hopefully the next course you attend is one of the ones that you are waiting to go on!!

Perhaps an Investors In People assessment is due?..the timing normally coincedes...

... and maybe a need to empty the training budget before the 31st of March?

I'll see your 3 days in Cairo and raise it 3 weeks in Chicago.

Just a shame that I only got to see the inside of the training centre for pretty much the whole time I was there

In most cases it`s the employers "ticking the boxes" so they can be removed from any blame if something goes wrong .... "Well you have received training ..... "
