I have just succumbed to the pressures of modern technology and upgraded my (now dead) phone to an iPhone 4.
It's arriving tomorrow! What do I need to know and what 'apps' (check me with the terminology!) must I have?
Spill you clever people... |

if you jailbreak the phone... it invalidates the warrenty on your phone.. so be careful...
actually one app that I would advise everyone with an Iphone 4 or Ipad to get straight away is "find my Iphone"
an app from apple themselves... if you lose it... it will give you a map of where it is... and if someone else has it it will remotely wipe ya phone..... |

it is free if you have an Iphone 4 and an Ipad. but if you have a 3GS then yes you have to pay...
you don't need the full mobile me paid subscription anymore to use it.....

Yeah... I had to give in... my phone is rubbish!
I was with friends at the weekend and he had a right cool one that when you held it up to the sky it told you what the stars were. Completely useless but I loved it!!
I'm open to suggestions for cool one... not really got anything particular in mind although I do like the game that you have to roll a little ball round a maze without dumping it down holes! |

The 'Find iPhone' part of mobile me is most definitely free. Plus you can get a 3GS to work with it if you first register with a an iPad or iPhone 4 then transfer the account details manually to the 3GS.
A few apps that are indispensable:
Shazam - hold your iPhone to the radio when you like a song but don't know what it is and Shazam will tell you. You can even hum the tune and it will guess (depending on your humming ability).
Shopping:
ShopStyle a must for any clothes/shoe shopper!
ShopSavvy or Redlaser are barcode scanners which instantly tell you where you can get the item cheaper elsewhere.
Info:
IMDB app is awesome!
TV Guide.co.uk app is the best for listings
Tools:
iLights uses your camera flash to turn you iPhone into a torch
Word Lens: hold up your iPhone to a foreign language sign and it translates it visually for! Soooo fucking spooky when you see it in action very Sci Fi. Only does Spanish so far though.
Google Translate app - even speaks the translation to you!
Entertainment:
TuneIn Radio - access every and any radio station on the planet and some on Mars!
VLC - Watch any movie on your iDevice not just iTunes stuff
Notes: Simplenote or Evernote (both sync with PC)
Oh and don't forget iBooks, Comiczeal, Kindle and Stanza for reading.
Plus watch freeview tv live on your iPhone at tvcatchup web site
Phew! going for a sit down now. |

Ah but can you use nails to operate them, my Nokia I can, tried an HTC and it would only let me use my fingers and with the length of my nails is totally impractical for texting. And no I am not cutting my nails |

There's an appstore app built into your iPhone so you can install directly onto your phone but you can also use iTunes. You will need iTunes to activate your phone initialy and also for any subsequent OS updates.
This goes for buying music and books as well, no need for you computer if you don't want to. |

another brilliant feature which i found today when i did the software update was the 'personal hotspot' feature. turn it on and you use your iphone as a wireless router. it makes up a password and you can connect to it with your laptop's wifi and surf the web. ive been using it today and its quick too! |

So dont panic
I dropped my iphone3 in the loo and took it to those lovely guys at the genius bar, who gave me a brand spank new ( reconditioned ) one for 140 quid - 20 quid more then the insurance would have cost if I had got it |

what id say to anyone is to ignore anyone saying not to get an iphone. i put off getting an iphone for ages because i didnt want to just get one because everyone else was. i had a nokia n900 before this and thought the iphone would be a step down and how wrong was i?
ive got mates "oh the iphones just all media bullshit" but keep very quiet when i talk about yet another feature or app for the iphone that their phones dont get.
the iphone is the only phone ive had in my life that ive not once had to turn off and back on because its crashed too. |

it will... say hello to never saying anything on public transport again...
and popping on to the internet in work breaks.....
you will go a bit "app happy" at the beginning.. then after 3 weeks you'll work out you have never used any of them and that will wear off |

no app.... but a big flashing red light and siren goes off at chez fabs whenever that word is mentioned...
if you are looking at getting a Iphone 4.. best advice i could give you is that if it were me.. I'd be tempted to wait...the Iphone 5 should be along early june if you can hold out... |

from what i hear from the geek forums... it looks as if the "5" has gone into test production....
so that suggest a june or july release date...

Day two is marvellous!! I've found an app for Facebook... one for the local buses, some games, the London tube map and some more games!
What I can't work out is how I get rid of some of the stuff on the first page... I mean it's unlikely that I'll ever use the stock market app!!
I've broken into my works wifi and stolen that! |

You can't get rid of the Apple installed apps but you could pop all the ones you don't like into a folder.
Touch an app and hold until the icons shake then drag and drop it onto another app you don't like. They will now sit in a folder you can call 'shitty apps' |

I just told you!
The act of dragging one app on top of the other automatically creates the folder with which they will both reside. |

I have an original iPad so wont be getting one, maybe the next version for me. But if I hadn't have got the original I would in the queue waiting now.
True story (sort of):
I was on hols last year in the US a week before the iPad launch. Then! Unexpectedly Iceland exploded and I was grounded for an extra week which allowed me to procure a shiny new iPad!
Now I'm not going to admit it here but let's just say there may have been a stick or two of funky dynamite under that volcano. Shhhhhhhh |

To be honest I had been looking into it. and it did use to cost so at that stage I didn't... but because for all of the newer iphone and both ipads it is free.. its an absolute no-brainer and I don't know why apple don't push it and shout about it.... |

okay.... few things to remember.. they say the average iphone user uses more megs per month, probably just because of all the apps out there....
as long as you don't stuff like video directly to the phone (via itunes doesn't count) you should be more than fine....

i downloaded a similar app for my HTC called 'wheres my android'. if you lose your phoe you ext it a certain command and you can find out its location, you can also make it ring even if you lost it while set on silent. not sure if yo can force it to turn on if it is off but that would be a good feature
also, am i the only saddo who wants one of those cute little android things in the adverts??? |

The iPhone 5 might be announced tomorrow but the whispers I have heard is it's a 2012 launch. |

Initial offering seems to be iCloud. Not exactly original thought
We've come to expect better of Jobs. Getting out of his sick bed to launch this was a bit of a waste of time. |

Patience is a virtue, all good things and all that, the iPhone 5 will in all probability be out at the end of the year now, in the meantime why not enjoy the iPnone 4, with the new IOS 5 software, it's a lot better than all the other 'smartphones' out there at the moment! |

By 'better' I can only assume you mean 'does more stuff' and, if that's the measure you use/ chose, fine, but no cigar.
Mac people going back to the late 70s expect better and, perhaps more importantly, Apple investors expect better too.

"i've heard there's even an app that even lets you talk to other people
It's funny you should say that, the iPhone is actually pretty crap as far as making a phone call goes in my experience... you'd think they'd nail that one considering it's name!! "
Does ANYONE actually use it for making phone calls? Most of the ones I see are purely for display purposes only. |

I'd like to think I could make a phone call on an iPhone!!
You're right about Apple letting their standards slip though, I've been toying with the idea of upgrading my iMac for a while, but part of me is considering *god forbid* a Windows machine!! |

The 'Mac' was only launched in 1984. The Lisa, Apple I and Apple II were in the 70's and early 80's.
As for the announcements there were 3 big ones and iCloud was only one of them. iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion were the biggies. iCloud is just the bits of glue that stick them together more betterererer. And it's free!!!
Overall I thought it was a very strong WWDC keynote this year. But as I posted yesterday I'm not suprised there's no iPhone 5 yet, they only just got the white iPhone 4 out the door! |

Nothing wrong with Windows machines, I have been using one for years, as long as you look after it, it will look after you |

This is true, I've been using both Macs and PCs for as long as I can remember, both have flaws to be honest, but I find everything just 'works' on a Mac... it can even run Windows (although most Mac users will sneer at you for doing it! ) |
