As said above we never elect a Prime Minister, we elect MP's, the leader of the majority party (mostly) becomes the PM. There is no guarantee that the leader of any party will be elected to parliament at a general election, so if they didn't then you would have no PM until a new one has been elected by whatever party that came from.

In the case of John Major, he held a general election as soon as reasonably possible and won it so I'd not put him in the same bracket as Brown.

Spot on.

In any event, Brown was an elected MP too.

Yes he was, and in many respects it was well known at the last election labour won that Blair would probably not last until the next one and Brown would take over.

We elect constituency members of parliament. Often based on their party's manifesto.

We never directly elect a Prime Minister. Hope that clarifies your confusion.

Maybe wrong but wasnt Churchill prime minister during the 2nd world war.Worked out ok for us .

Thatcher was elected by a 150 seat majority as leader at the election.

Next one will almost cetainly be Boris. Some 75% of Tories are Eurosceptics and cant see another credible candisdate in their ranks.

I suspect that Boris Johnson is more right wing than David Cameron - the public buffoon persona is just that: a guise for the gullible. I don't trust him. Or May who was uncommonly quiet in the referendum, nor the slimy Gove. Certainly not Osbourne - another who has gone quiet.....not Corbyn for Labour too as I think he's a wet blanket with no gravitas.

His stupid schemes to clean up air quality and promote cycling caused more congestion, made air quality worse, ground London to a halt and have deterred investment in the city.

Oh well done OP.... back to Forum Normality ...

Churchill was an elected MP and was asked by His Majesty to become PM in WWII. He was leader of the Conservative Party which won the 1951 Election and was asked again to be PM. He won a war and brought prosperity after the revolutionary foresight of the Attlee Government.

John Major was asked by her Majesty to be PM after he was elected leader of the Conservative Party. He then won the Election in 1992. He oversaw a marked improvement in the Economy and handed over an annual surplus to Blair...

Gordon Brown was similarly invited to be PM. Unlike the other two he failed to get re-elected. And fucked up the economy.

So you were 33% right ....

MY preferences?

Gove as PM - We need a steady hand and someone who has shown we have reasons to be proud and have hope and can project that hope..

Hammond as Chancellor - He has a sound financial background and shadowed Labour Treasury people. And he is as boring as hell.

Boris - To chair a post Brexit EU negotiating committee. He needs to prove himself with the wider public and we need a big Brexit character to front up to the EU morons.

May to Foreign Office - She has been the most successful and longest serving Home Secretary. And she had the courage to take on the Police Federation. Foreign Governments will be easy peasy.

But anyone except Boris as PM. And I voted Leave.

I think a different structure is needed for these different times. Someone who will pull the country together and someone who will negotiate hard for us maybe aren't the same person. I have to say I was impressed by the speeches by Gisela, Boris and Michale yesterday. The right tone, calm and inclusive. And interestingly it was Boris that brought in the young Remainers.

Gove I think will be a clever but passionate PM who can return some pride in Britain.

Boris will have to prove himself by heading the Brexit negotiating team where I think a good brain and some clever tactics will be needed.

This team must include Labour people like Gisela Stuart who was an outstanding orator and was never phased by the barbs and insults that came her way. I was very impressed by how she spoke in German part way through her speech at Manchester when the overall result was announced to hold out a hand to them. And yes she did translate!

IDS, Grayling and even Farage deserve to be in that team.

For me Cameron and Osborne should be led away quietly and put out to grass never to be seen again. (And I am a lifelong Tory).

I think Osbourne should go simply for threatening an early budget with tax rises if we left. Disgraceful punishment scare tactics which failed to work.

As much as I dislike IDS because of his disability cuts, he was good in the referendum and didn't use scare tactics. So maybe him. He was leader before after all.

It really became about entrenched beliefs, like asking a protestant and a catholic to argue it out over religion and we all know how that ends!.

If there's a lesson to be learned it's that we all need to move along with are "beliefs" working together.... I'm pretty sure the EU could have worked for everyone, had somebody bashed heads together 15 or 20 years ago

"Seeing as european leaders want to get the brexit under way. Why is it cameron:s procrastinating? All the uncertainty and delays are damaging.

this..

he wanted it and should start the negotiations now, he's not negotiating on behalf of himself as an individual..

he is negotiating on behalf of the country as will whomever be whenever they start..

he need's to grow a set and get on with it..

I like the theory. But I really don't want someone negotiating for us who failed to negotiate anything decent for us when we threatened to leave. Now we have left we need a new face and someone who actually fought for this win."

didn't think of that. True! the leadership offer to be sorted. I would go with boris.

More uncertainty bought upon the country by the conservatives

Cameron said in his manifesto to offer a referendum simply as a way to get elected. If he'd been confident in his OWN ability and that of his party enough last election, then he wouldn't have had to have offered a referendum and we wouldn't be here now. He's fucked the country up economically, in the short term at least and might cause the UK to split. Long term, I think it will improve.

As much as I dislike IDS because of his disability cuts, he was good in the referendum and didn't use scare tactics. So maybe him. He was leader before after all. "

After his budget comment and threatening to take pensions away Osborne should be dragged out from under whatever stone he is hiding under and fucked and burned. At least Cameron had the decency to resign.

That possibly explains why she came across very well

Maybe that is why, as an MP, she stood out

I like the theory. But I really don't want someone negotiating for us who failed to negotiate anything decent for us when we threatened to leave. Now we have left we need a new face and someone who actually fought for this win.

its a fair point but whom?

Not Boris as i don't think they will take him seriously, have him maybe as part of it as you said above but there needs to be serious negotiators who do the nitty gritty..

Boris's antics as Mayor was often more about Boris grandstanding and saying things for which later he had to have someone explain as sure as hell he isn't the type of ego to apologise when he puts his foot in his mouth..

bit like Jeux Sans Frontieres, don't play your joker too early or in his case maybe not at all..

(And I am a lifelong Tory)."

agree on Gisela Stuart and Osborne, never been a fan of Gove but such things are to one side now..

Grayling has something about him..

would not be surprised that someone a bit more centrist comes through when the Tories have their election, often the way of these things..

It was less than 18 months, he could have held a general election less than 6 montgs after he became prime minister yes, but it was a stable government at the time, shown by his party's selection in the 1992 election.

"Maybe wrong but wasnt Churchill prime minister during the 2nd world war.Worked out ok for us .

Thatcher was elected by a 150 seat majority as leader at the election.

Next one will almost cetainly be Boris. Some 75% of Tories are Eurosceptics and cant see another credible candisdate in their ranks.

Some in the media are saying Priti Patel. I think Boris will get it but personally I think Priti Patel would be a brilliant Prime Minister.

LOL

They’re both shit

Personally I like Boris.Very clever man and has very clever people around him.

Priti Patel as Deputy Prime Minister maybe to give some ballance

Boris was a disaster as mayor, his harebrained schemes have cost the country billions

How pray tell.Mayor of London not the country.

Boris bikes were good.

His stupid schemes to clean up air quality and promote cycling caused more congestion, made air quality worse, ground London to a halt and have deterred investment in the city.

Have you seen the air Quality in London. No on could clean it up

Super highway shit but hey don't drive in London if you don't like it. Khan wants to charge diesels extra so not only Boris with hair brained schemes. And anyway started with Livingston and his congestion charging zone. And to make matters worse some moron wants to close Tower bridge for 3 months

Don't see any lack of investment from my side as offices don't stay empty long and only got to see the skyline for the investment in new offices.

And yes I spend six days a week driving in London and have done for the past 30 years.

You don't improve air quality by increasing the numbers of standing vehicles. Both Ken and Boris have increased the number of "pinch points" that take traffic lanes out increasing the numbers of vehicles idling. Boris also commissioned the new Routemaster hybrid bus that doesn't run on electric power in town and has a euro4 engine when legislation states it should be euro6 or better.

Totally agree. But who would do what is really needed and that is a total ban on any vehicle that is not electric.

Wouldn't work so by stealth they have tried to make people give up driving by making it as hard as possible without actually banning. they have gone arse about face with the cycle super highway, deliberately taking out road lanes to build cycle lanes alongside the old cycle lanes. Hyde Park being the best example "

The Victoria Embankment is another. Three lanes to one.

Could of done the same with a few cans of paint and not spent months digging up London

I kind of want Priti to be the next one - three reasons.

1. Lesser of a lot of evils for my political _iews.

2. A big finger up to the tiny minority of the leave/ukip camp who were blatant racists - e.g the lot parading around proclaiming London had fallen as it has a muslim mayor.

3. For the first time I can say that I'd fuck our PM and it wouldn't be a joke. :P

I disagree. It doesn't have to be someone who was committed to BREXIT to lead the negotiations, only someone who is willing to accept that BREXIT is happening and is willing to get the best deal possible for Britain. From a tactical point of _iew, sending someone in to negotiate with a people who they have called a bunch of unelected, bureaucratic dictators, might not be the best person to get a good deal from them.

This. ^

It's like Junker is making all these pretty brutal comments, and I get why. But on the other hand, Merkel and the Dutch representative were just trying to get some sensitive, kind but firm order in.

Yeah, we need to get on with this now, and be brisk about it to stabilise the British and European markets, but snarky remarks from either side isn't going to help maintain good european relations 48% of the voters wanted, and presumably everyone wants for trade.

"As said above we never elect a Prime Minister, we elect MP's, the leader of the majority party (mostly) becomes the PM.

Er no he didn't he waited for as absolutely long as he could after thatcher and it was right at the end of the allowed time that major called the election

Thatcher resigned in 1990. Election may 1992.

It was less than 18 months, he could have held a general election less than 6 montgs after he became prime minister yes, but it was a stable government at the time, shown by his party's selection in the 1992 election."

The following election result is irrelevant to the statement he held an election as soon as possible - he could've gone to the queen in weeks but he held on for almost the full 5 year term (which would've been up in June 1992) exactly like Brown did 15 years later

Precisely how can a campaign consisting of people from many different parties make a 'commitment'? Did they produce a manifesto? No because they couldn't. And neither incidentally did the 'Remain side' for exactly the same reason.

This was a binary referendum to decide do we stay or leave the EU. Just that and nothing else. As IDS said they were offering the possibilities that opened up post-Brexit that were not available being within the EU. It is now up to the Government to make every possible use of ALL options now available and those available as we ease our way out of the EU.

The Referendum was not a General election. We were not voting for policies offered by parties. So your comments are rather irrelevant to be honest.. But I understand you didn't like the result. We get that.

Reamin did have a manifesto of sorts, Cameron had concessions from the EU that people knew about.

Leave did make claims. Farage confirmed this when he said it was a "mistake" to have made them in the first place.

"Best quote from leave camp today Ian Duncan smith

“We never made any commitments. We just made a series of promises that were possibilities.”

Well, thanks for clearing that one up.

When will people wake up to the fact that far age was nothing to do with the official vote leave campaign

"Bring back Tony blair

Not sure if criminals can be PM,if the iraq inquiry isnt a whitewash he will soon be in clink

Not a chance, if they make removing dictators in Arab countries leaving a vacuum for militias and terrorists then a more recent number 10 incumbent is in trouble as well.

Both parties know that and will protect their own."

So true

Just a point, this wasn't a binary referendum, that is legally binding, this was an Advisory referendum, which is not legally binding to the government to act upon. Although there is no suggestion that they won't.

Brighton - even Hove!

Olive from On the Buses would have made a good PM, with Blakey as Chancellor, and Stan and Jack with Mum and Sandra and the Manager as the Cabinet.

May as well as Stan, Ollie, Abbott, Costello and Curly, Larry and Moe.
