"As it's a simple count there's no magic number to reach is there?" It's a straight majority. The problem is that we don't know what the magic number is as until each area declares we don't know what the voter count is in each area.

"That's extremely worrying. I think the Sunderland and Newcastle results along with lower turnouts in London and Scotland are foretelling bad things. Sterling crashing." I was worried last night with the storms and then when I saw the flooding across London this morning my heart sank for turnout.

Yes but is there a record of votes cast?, otherwise it's 51% of X when we don't know what X is" That's the point I am making. We don't know what X is until all the returns are in. It's an absolute count. So, the current returns show 161,744 for leave and 158,537 for remain with 5 out of 382 areas returned.

But there are around 43m registered voters, and turn out will be 70%ish. All it takes to win is 1 vote more than the otherside.

"North Down voting Remain is a surprise. But it's the most affluent part of Northern Ireland Do you know how many votes there are for Manchester? No-one seems to be mentioning it as one of the important city votes..." Not sure, but it'll be interesting to see how areas with big student and graduate populations vote.

No, not yet, I meant in the same way that they keep saying Birmingham is a big number, just wondered where Manchester sat with it all

"Wales has had significant EU funding investment and yet voting to leave. I know, I found a lot of people in Leeds and Liverpool were quite blind to how much investment the EU gave the areas too." Just as they are to the fact that this government has made decisions that the UK should not apply for certain funds which could be used for regeneration and skills development.

" Yeah like the sodding EU flooding relief fund which the North of the UK would have benefited from earlier this year - bet it would have changed a few perceptions too. Same with the South now. Funny isn't it, get involved wholeheartedly and you reap greater benefits - don't get involved an elect anti-EU MEPs to represent you, who have poor attendance, and you are likely to get the short end of the stick.

That will narrow as we get more of the counts coming in closer together. That's why I can't quite bear to exit just yet.

Depending on how the home counties vote these could cancel out the largely remain votes expected for London. However, the floods in London may have affected the turnout (reports that some areas are below 60%).
