I live in a semi and the neighbours have put their house on the market dreading a young family buying it, as the walls aren't very thick...I can hear next door's clock chiming, their arguements and TV. Last thing I wanna hear is screaming kids etc.
Anyone know about soundproofing, thinking about getting lounge and bedroom walls done, anyone know costs and how easy it is to do?

The lack of soundproofing will work in both directions.
Make a racket at every viewing until you see a purchaser you think might be quiet - like an old lady |

"lol!! good idea.
Never thought about the council...cheers for that"
I'd be astonished if any council has money for soundproofing a privately owned home. They don't even have money to soundproof their own housing stock. |

you can buy acoustic panels (they use them in cinema complexes to stop sound transference from one screen to the next)...... big job though to then plasterboard over them to cover them up.

someone told me egg trays tiled on a wall does the job, then covered in plasterboard. they reckon it worked well too

Its not easy ,to stop sound transferring you need mass especially to kill the long wave bass frequences you would have to reduce the size of your luinge by between 6-9"and build another isolated wall from the current one it would require an air gap of approximately 1 inch partioning made of 4.2 dfor the whole length of the wall your trying to isolate from ,the studding would have to float on 50mm + neoprene then 2 layers of plasterboard +high density rock wool or more expensive bulky material then another outer layer of 18mm plasterboard .
sound can reconstitute itself in any gap as its method of tranduction is air
so it would need to be build with precision or it would not work .
as some one else said talk to the council see what they say . |

Youll have to eat a hell of a lot of eggs to completley sound proof your house lol best start eating them now so when the new neighbours move in you should have enuff lol |

To get it done 100% will be a fair bit of work, would cost a fair bit, and you would also loose a lot of space.
There are acoustic panels that you can buy, which would knock out enough conversation type noise. Obviously if you were having a full blown disco, then next door would still hear.
But for day to day stuff, kids, tv, clocks, arguements, sexual sessions, then some simple acoustic panels would work fine. You would be best to plasterboard over it, but I don't see why you couldn't wall paper or paint over them. Could even go retro and paint each panel a different colour
If you want any more help or specific advice, then let me know |

unfortunately egg cartons wont work in attenuating sound, what they do is simply reduce the reverb time and attenuate the midrange frequecies slightly but they wont actually reduce sound pressure levels, you will need a floating wall and mass for that |

"wow that sounds complicated and I didn't understand most it....think soundproofing for dummies lol!!!"
yeah acoustics is very complicated and unfortunately expensive to be effective,if you do not isolate all of the source then it will simply rreconstitute itself in any gaps .
There is however the field of psychoacoustics where eventually you will get used to most moderate levels of sound as long as its not repetative ,if you have a noisy swing partner who makes a lot of noise when cuming its best to put music on to defuse the noise for the neighbours. |

"Can you not just get some funky ear muffs ? "
yeah that's a good idea, tho I think I need the soundproofing to stop them hearing my screaming orgasms too lol!!! |

Putting egg boxes or acoustic panels on your wall will do nothing with regards to sound proofing. Im actually studying acoustics at the moment.
The only thing I'd say you could do to minimise sound from next door would be to strip your wall to the brick, put some wooden studding up, then fill it with insulation before putting foam back plasterboards up and skim over. |
