Car insurance renewal quote

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

With the car insurance coming up for renewal I got an email from the insurer just now saying they had my credit card on file and that they would renew the insurance for me. What was written in a tiny font was that their new premium would be £3300! Last year was £650. The cheek of it. Is this normal? We've only had a car for three years without anything to push up the premium.

Many go by Post Code, how much no claims do you have?

make sure you protect your no claims and get a letter from each company you move too

If you have 9 years no claims with say Tesco and move to another company who considers 5 years as full no claims (Mercedes does this) it means your saved up 9 years falls to 5 years

you need to ensure that what ever company you move too, puts in your notes the correct amount of no claims you have.

I have 17 years no claims and trying to keep this requires a lot of work and explaining to companies but if you take the time and effort it can be done

Renewal quotes are always higher than the previous year, I've never stayed with the same company 2 years in a row, but I've never seen a renewal quote that high? Has there been a spate of car thefts in your area?

Because they think you won't look, its about time these companies were taken to task.

I got a renewal quote for £800 from £210 last year, got online quote £203, rang up and cancelled, then suddenly the quote went down to £210, got the usual didn't we provide a great service, yes you took my money, after that the next communication was to rip me off, I declined there offer and following one of £199.

And its not the first time this has happened.

It strikes me as odd that they would put your renewal premium in tiny font....what Micky mouse company is it? Most companies send proper renewal documentation with the renewal premium clearly stated. I always shop around and rarely end up renewing as you can normally get a better deal as a new customer.

Not that we know of. It is a quiet residential area in North London. Now we have the years no claims so would expect it to drop accordingly.

One can only assume they are hoping to make a few or at least a lot of pounds of someone not reading properly

To 99% of companies that is irrelevant.

Always use go compare or similar, martin lewis money saving expert website also has a tool to check your job description as some jobs carry higher premiums ( it suggests different titles which will cost less). Then go to topcashback or quidco and get the same policy with some money back.

5 years no claims is the maximum discount pretty much all companies offer, some carry on counting the years but no change in actual %.

They also massively reduce first years premium go get new customers,2nd year you "pay" the extra for those new customers.

But OP it should rise that much unless you have and accident, moved to a bad area or have a young/new driver added this year

I have no loyalty at all these days. The best price for the cover I want get my money. Its that simple.

And then it ends in tears with a written off car and no payout.

There's no point in being loyal to insurance companies, they're business and just want the money.

Same for house insurance but I only stay with the same people as I used to work for them and can get every penny out of them when claiming

I've been with same company for years. But never accepted the renewal price. Always shop around to get best price. Then phone up my insurer and they have always matched the best price I have found.

So begs the question who is regulating these clowns, if you went into a shop and said

"How much is this loaf of bread?"

"As you're regular £5.78!"

A stranger walks in the price is 90p.

You know who their really ripping off the poor with no access to the net, the confused, old ladies, its ridiculous.

"Go campare other quotes on one of the comparison sites"

don't just use the one comparison site....

money saving expert suggest using go compare AND Money Supermarket AND compare the market.... and that should get you about 97% of all quotes.....

and don't be afraid to barter....I kept annoying zurich by saying well "x" is cheaper, give me a reason to stay........ and don't be afraid to carry out the threat and go if you don't like the answer.....

Many of them aren't that interested in keeping your business though. They mostly rely on the lazy who just let their policies auto Renew

Do search on line for best quote. Then go to post office as they are saying they will beat any quote by 50 pounds

I laways pay cash for insurance so they cannot renew without my knowing, paying monthly is auto renewal so you have to what them.

My insurance is quite hight as I'm a courier and always argue the point with them every year.

Never accept the first offer they will always take the piss and there is no such thing as loyalty with them.

Then price matching gets on my wick as I just want the best offer they have if it's not good enough then I just tell them.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Make sure you tell them you`re going elsewhere if you are. Unless they hear otherwise, they will take the money and not return any money for the period they consider the insurance to be in force

"Martin Lewis MSE said all premiums were increasing this year & you need to shop around but much better deals are available x"

Mainly due to the increase in insurance premium tax. Never used to pay any but over the years this currently stands at 9.5% and was increased to 10 in the budget but not come into force yet. Also the amount of claims have risen due to the staged accidents and claims for injuries.
