I have awful eyesight, -7.00 in each eye. I'd love to be glasses free. Contact lenses are not an option as I don't get on with them.
Has anyone on here had corrective surgery? Were you glad with the results? Any long term side effects?

Refractive surgery is very successful for most people but like all surgical procedures, not without risks. In my years of working in optical dispensing I have seen many people come back for eye tests who are thrilled with the results. However, there have been some for whom it has not been successful and who still require glasses after the procedure. I have also seen some who have had complications and ended up with worse visual acuity after the surgery than they had before.
For the majority of people all is well, until presbyopia hits. From the age of 40-45ish the lens in the eye starts to lose some of it's elasticity which means that we start to need help with reading. Laser correction cannot stop this so even if you become glasses free for distance, you will require reading glasses as you age. |

Not had it done but based on what I've read and heard having corrective eye surgery in your 40s may not be the best option.
Often people's eyesight starts to change in such a way that it improves overall but you need reading glasses as you get older.
This means that you may only get a couple of years glasses free before having to buy reading glasses.
But, everyone is different so probably best to ask an expert ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

"Thanks guys. I did have a consultation about 10 years ago, but wasn't sure at the time. I can live with reading glasses "
In that case go for it. It's not an option for me but I get on fine with contact lenses, for when I want to be specs free. |

I had it done 8 years ago and have never regretted it.
It was painful and unpleasant tho
Just had my eyes tested and my eyes are starting to deteriorate with old age ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

I had it done last year and it's so worth it, I wore lenses for 7/8 years and was getting reacurring infections.
I have To admit straight after I had it done I regretted it, I couldn't open my eyes, they were streaming, so light sensitive and painful. Drew drove me home and I went straight to bed. I woke up 3 hours later and I could see. I have 20/20 vision now. |

They can now do something with an artificial lens.
Apparently it doesn't deteriorate so gives you good eyesight that will remain for the rest of your life...
However it's about £3000 or £4000 per eye. Many people are just having one eye done... |

That's good. It was a while since I read about it. Obviously prices have become better... |

Had it done about 3 years ago and think its one of the best decisions I have ever made. Quick and easy with a couple of weeks of eyedrops. Now, no more glasses fogging up when excercising, no fear of loosing expensive glasses in the sea etc. I need reading glases for close work but was told that when I went originally. Would do it again if needs be. |

"Oh and -7 isn't that bad at all... I'm about -9.75
Nita
The last time I (Cal) was in the opticians, there was a lass in there who's prescription was -26 ....
Cal"
The highest prescriptions I have dispensed have been a +16 and a -21 although I have seen higher.
One which stands out in my memory was a blended lenticular lens in a +26. I was fortunate that my supervising DO allowed me to practice measuring the lens power on the uncut lenses when our on site lab received them from the manufacturer and were unsure if they met British standards.
Optics is a wonderful and fascinating world to work in, I love it ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |
