England is a cup of tea.
France a wheel of ripened brie.
Greece, a short squat olive tree.
America is a gun.
Brazil is football on the sand.
Argentina Maradonna's hand.
Germany, an oompah band.
America is a gun.
Holland is a wooden shoe.
Hungary, a goulash stew.
Australia, a kangaroo.
America is a gun.
Japan is a thermal spring.
Scotland is a highland fling.
Oh, better to be anything
then America Is a gun.
Brian Bilson
I don't really like poetry and this one is obviously reductive. But it's obviously very poignant at this sad time.

If America is a gun, does that mean the UK is a machete (I do seem to recall a particularly gory machete murder in broad dayight with onlookers taking video footage, not helping the victim, and not all that long ago)? Torture devices used to find witches? Invaders of the world to make them conform to their standards of "culture?"
I'm not criticising England's past, just saying that we are not what our culture is seen as, at any given time.
Yes, America has gun crime. I, for one, know A LOT of Americans and very few own a gun, and those who do use them for hunting innocent animals, not mowing down innocent people.
I debated responding to this post, but as an American, I am tired of my country being discussed only as a gun happy place. We have much more to offer and believe it or not, the country as a whole is, in general, as safe a place to be as the UK.
