Orlando Gunman was Gay?

So the latest story on the beeb is that the Orlando shooter had been to the club many times and not just to scout it out. He stayed for alcoholic drinks (tut tut) and one person claims to have met him from a gay dating website.

If it's true then ISIS come out of this looking pretty stupid. Owen Jones stormed off a sky news interview after he felt the interviewer tried to downplay the LGBT element, I hate to say it but he was probably right!

Sounds to me that he was gay, but because of his religious beliefs, he was taught that these feelings were wrong.

This isn't exclusive to Islam, I have known plenty of Christians going through this terrible torture.

Not that this in any was excuses him from being a murdering bastard, but religion is a huge problem in this world.

And as for ISIS, he was no more a member of ISIS because he supported them than I am a member of Led Zeppelin because I listen to their music.

Funny how a few billion other religious people manage not to shoot up gay clubs.

Anyway its embarrassing for ISIS because initially they wanted to take credit for the attack. They'll probably want to backtrack now...

This was a hate crime against the LGBT community by a Muslim. I'm really failing to see how a man with no proven links to ISIS can be acting on behalf of ISIS.

And yes if it does come out that he was a not so closet homosexual ISIS will look pretty daft

North West

There was always something not quite right about this story and his phone call to say he was doing it "on behalf of Isis"

The anti Muslim backlash on social media was predictable and now seemingly very premature. I wonder how all those people who posted vile anti Muslim rhetoric feel now that the story is actually evolving? It is looking like it is just another example of a deranged, confused and twisted individual who was able to buy deadly weapons as easy as buying a six pack of beer.

This guy was a seriously fucked up person who finally went over the edge in a society that gave him the tools to try to efficiently murder hundreds of people in a very short space of time. The fact that only 50 are dead is probably something to be thankful for.

He couldn't have really been the most devout Muslim going considering his fondness for alcohol!!!

His dad has some pretty homophobic views so I'd guess that had a bigger part in it...

His dad hates gays. If he was gay but loved his dad then that's going to be a difficult conflict. Add those factors to someone who may have had something in his wiring that's a bit off and as you say, a different picture emerges.

I watched an interview with the gunman's father where he seemed reluctant offer his own opinion about gay relationship and chose to comment on his belief that the club should have had better security instead.......

And his father's views certainly would make his son somewhat troubled if he was gay

You don't get a membership card and sign a contract to be a "member" of ISIS. You don't have to go to meetings or meet other "members".

It is a very fluid thing.

ISIS send out messages accessible via internet of what they consider legitimate targets and anybody can carry out an atrocity and claim it is in the name of ISIS.

Although this chap he'd meet other dubious characters and was under investigation previously.

you technically don't pledge alligence to ISIS as such... you pledge alligence to the leader....

they are happy enough to call him a "soldier of the caliphate"... and they have encouraged people to strike out on their own..... use their own initative so to speak....

which makes it harder for authorities to catch them... like at fort hood, san bernadino and now this....

He could well have been bi, not necessarily gay.

But he wouldn't be the first self-loathing gay/bi guy. It's not a huge leap to see how that could put someone who already has an aggressive/ psychotic/bipolar side to him over the edge, especially considering his upbringing.

Some of the 9/11 bombers were frequent visitors to strip clubs.

This won't worry ISIS , it's seen as a victory. These facts will be omitted when they are sending out their messages and preaching about heir victories over the decadent west.

If they are questioned over the story that this shooter was a homosexual they will say it's lies and propaganda put out by western media to undermine them.

Is it possible that some shady people or organisation has planted this story in the the media to counteract Trumps 'I told you so!' use of this tragedy? After all a 'closet gay' going on a rampage and massacring out, loud and proud gays in a gay club does not have the same value to the Trump campaign than the homophobic son of a homophobic Afghan, Muslim, immigrant has.

Probably just a wild fanciful thought on my part, it is not like there is a track record of thing like that happening in the USA...

As for your comment about getting people killed, again excuse my cynicism, but don't most politicians wade through rivers of other peoples blood whenever it is in their political interests? So why should you be surprised when Trump stokes the Islamophobic fires to further his ambitions? I've had many arguments with people over climate change, when you hear the stuff they come out with you immediately know which dodgy website there repeating the nonsense they are, during the argument you really get a very good idea about why they feel like they do, who put the beliefs into their heads and why they almost always won't listen to the counter argument.

.

.

Deconstructing this into religious beliefs, human emotions, societal pressures is really not that hard.

Random acts are very rarely random there's nearly always some driving force behind the act.

Islam is obviously very homophobic like most other religions, the biggest difference is most Muslims still take their religion very seriously with shit loads of praying and "Sunday schools" , so beliefs are very much ingrained into children.... But let's face facts there not alone, Jamaican culture is highly homophobic along with lots of African culture, Russian/Eastern block, the west it's self is not exactly perfect but the problem lies the fact were decades ahead of alot of the rest of the world, it's a clash of cultures that the west must win!

I agree with everything you say right up to your last statement which should read:

'It is a clash of cultures that the West must win to survive.'

Unfortunately I do not think we will win. I think we are living through the beginning of the end of the of Western Civilisation and are coming ever closer to the next dark age.

What annoys me with this whole rhetoric is the hypocrisy... Jesus anyone would think Obama hadn't droned his own citizens for 8 years, Hillary Clinton didn't jump up and down dancing with glee.."we came we saw he died" over Gaddafis death, Hillary only ten years ago was denying LBGT marriages, calling black kids "predatory pack animals" when it suited her and the democrats and who was in charge when the highest number of black people were incarcerated in the USA... Bill Clinton!.

.

.

The utter failure of two party politics in the US for decades is what has given trump any chance of even running let alone winning.

In pretty much most polls in the US for nearly twenty years, gun control, universal health care, decriminalising of cannabis, gay marriage, minimum wage have all been very high on the us peoples agenda yet still neither party have done very little about it.

.

There is a genuine case for societal collapse in the US in the coming decades and that should worry people alot

I actually think you're right. You're right, and it's sad, and I know people in the US who think the only way to fix it is for things to get so bad that people realize they have to do something to change it.

But imagine what the world will look like if things do get that bad.

Unfortunately the USA has developed a system where politicians rely on the patronage of the wealthy to support their bids for power. This leads to the wealthy being able to dictate policy. It is not in the interests of the wealthy to have to pay more than the absolute minimum they can, or for insurance companies to have universal health care, the arms industry to have gun control or the tobacco and alcohol industries to decriminalise any other alkaloid stimulants or depressants.

As for gays, well you need a visible minority for the population to vilify if you you want to subjugate all without opposition, and with the rise of black awareness in the 1960's they were no longer an easy target. So HIV made the LBGT's the perfect target.

Unfortunately we have the same system and scapegoats here, just our politicians have a lot more subtlety than our more brash cousins over the pond.

What we need is a massive experiment where one big countries follows the ideas of the looney left and another follows Adam Smith. The first country will be called the 'Society OF Violent, Ignorant, Egotistical Tossers' and the second will be called 'the Land of the Free and the Brave'. We'll see which one collapses first...

" I would going thru trumps speech saying...Thats wrong, thats incorrect, thats a lie, and also thinking "that speech is going to get people killed!!" turning the blame to american muslims for not turning him in is a very dangerous move.....

News Flash! Politician lies in attempt to gain power! Sorry for the cynicism but whats new there Fabio?

As for your comment about getting people killed, again excuse my cynicism, but don't most politicians wade through rivers of other peoples blood whenever it is in their political interests? So why should you be surprised when Trump stokes the Islamophobic fires to further his ambitions? After all the US military has been killing Muslims since 9/11 and every successful US politician has made political capital from it, its now Trumps turn to cash in on human misery..

The tragedy is America bankrupted itself fighting that country to the death and for what thanks?.

Not that I think the states is blameless or perfect or even far from perfect but given the choice between that or China, Russia, Africa, the middle East, south America....I know which system I'd plump for.

The main problem in the west is, in our rush to be progressive we forgot that not everybody wanted to come along with us, some will have to be dragged along by force and some tragically just will fight to the death not to come!.

In that rush we shut up our own bigots with political correctness but that political correctness is now allowing the people who don't want to be dragged into progressiveness an escape route... I'm Muslim, I'm black, I'm an immigrant, I'm gay, this is now an excuse in many ways for bigotry and intolerance.

I really don't know what the answer is, maybe it's a very tight rope to walk while making small gains in the right direction?.

Either way there's going to be sacrifices on both sides for quite awhile yet

Not necessarily. Terrorism is violence in the pursuit of political aims. A lone gunman who is, for want of a better phrase, crazy, isn't necessarily a terrorist.

Unfortunately yes it does.

There are whole armies of right wing political interest groups (anti Muslim, anti LFGT and of course the NRA) looking to muddy the waters and make political capital from this tragedy that what the killer was and his motivation will become more important than what he did and how to prevent it from happening again.

If this story is true, then it's the only good thing to come out of this atrocity.

Why good?

Because it's now exposed two major forces of evil in the world - American Republicans and Islamic extremists as the desperate, clawing filth that they are. Both attempted to profit from this mass murder in their own respective ways, and if Omar was indeed a repressed homosexual, then it also exposes both religions for the dangers of the toxic trash they spew through their mindless fear and hatred of natural homosexuality.

I don't really know much about him other than the sky news thing. I read news articles and don't really look at who writes them most of the time. I should probably pay more attention, though.

You profile the what a person at high risk of committing such a thing looks like, find them and intervene. I don't think he was born destined to be a mass killer, things happened to him along the way and he was far from a normal guy.

I'd like to think that if I was writing a big data algorithm to search for people at risk of this kind of thing then I'd hope it would pick up a wife beating, gun owning male with a prejudice father, a history of violence such as holding a knife to a friends throat and also has a repressed sexuality to go with it.

You profile the what a person at high risk of committing such a thing looks like, find them and intervene. I don't think he was born destined to be a mass killer, things happened to him along the way and he was far from a normal guy.

so we shoot everyone thats got brown hair and wears glasses

I'd like to think that if I was writing a big data algorithm to search for people at risk of this kind of thing then I'd hope it would pick up a wife beating, gun owning male with a prejudice father, a history of violence such as holding a knife to a friends throat and also has a repressed sexuality to go with it.

so who writes the big data profile on the other 7,404,976,783 people that live in the world "

I could do it.....

Everyone gets the same one.... which basically reads ....

This person suffers from a human condition which makes them fallible.....

Ahh you see that's why I used the terms "Human condition" and "fallible"..

Both contain sufficient variable to qualify the statement....

Surely you see the logic in that,,,,,,,

It's speculation, as we won't get the full details plus he's dead.

He had been to the club and used gay apps but that may have been to learn more.

Often homophobic people have a gay interest within them. But it doesn't have to be a given. Fucked up bloke who probably had something within him that he didn't like and projected it on to others.

Not necessarily. Terrorism is violence in the pursuit of political aims. A lone gunman who is, for want of a better phrase, crazy, isn't necessarily a terrorist. "

Osama Bin Laden told a Pakistani interviewer after 9/11: "We love death. The U.S. loves life. That is the big difference between us."

These ideas date back to the Battle of Qadisiyya in the year 636, when the Caliph stated to the Persian commander: “If you don’t [convert to Islam] you should know that I have come to you with an army of men that love death, as you love life.”

No answer to that is there?

"So the latest story on the beeb is that the Orlando shooter had been to the club many times and not just to scout it out.

I suspect this is all standard smear campaign as happens after all of these horrific events, initiated by the CIA in this case to try and discredit the original offender amongst potential supporters who may view him as some sort of martyr.

"This was a hate crime against the LGBT community by a Muslim. I'm really failing to see how a man with no proven links to ISIS can be acting on behalf of ISIS.

And yes if it does come out that he was a not so closet homosexual ISIS will look pretty daft

I think it's more ISIS wanted to claim it than him saying he was doing it for them.

He couldn't have really been the most devout Muslim going considering his fondness for alcohol!!!

His dad has some pretty homophobic views so I'd guess that had a bigger part in it... "

Sadly.....though from what I've seen a long way from being in a majority........his dad, among many religious zealots of many faiths, is a long way from being alone!

Actually; drinking alcohol is not specifically forbidden by Islam;

Losing control of your body ( your body is given to you by God, therefore abusing it is to abuse god ) is forbidden.

Thus Alcohol may make you lose control of your body; this is interpreted by most as prohibiting alcohol .

Purist Muslims may also choose to believe that caffeine, cigarettes, and other drugs/ stimulants do the same and be prohibited.

Other more liberal Muslims may ( and do) take the view that " in moderation " is acceptable

I suspect that this is linked to how they end up being radicalised and why they can be convinced to die for a cause. I was a sinner but look at me now. I could be totally wrong.

But the orlando shooter is different in that he reportedly never even went to mosque, I'm not sure how you can be radicalised when not even engaging with the most basic elements of his religion.

Without getting into the homophobia debate.....I am still upset at a person's inhumanity to a group of people who's only crime was to go to a club for a fun evening out.

Whatever his true motives or influences were, he was unstable or deranged if he thought that the world would be a better place after carrying out such an act.

Sorry if this sounds simplistic but even after having the weekend to consider this, I cannot draw any deeper thought from the event other than to have the deepest sympathy for the victims and their families and friends.

Every time these terrorists are named there follows in the days after stories of use of drugs, prostitutes, alcohol, use of sex sites etc etc. Maybe I'm just cynical. Either way their acts are not those of decent human beings who should be awarded martyr/hero status.

"

.

Second generation immigrant syndrome.

It's never the original immigrant, it's nearly always there kids?.

It wouldn't surprise me if this guy wasn't a practising Muslim, just sexuality conflict coming up agaist childhood and societal programming!.

The kids are caught in two distinct and very different cultures, if you go wrong in one culture it's the fault of the other and vise versa, the French radicals had problems with alcohol and drugs and sex and it's very easy to go back to your second culture and say aha that's where I've gone wrong, it's not ME, it's this wicked foreign culture, it's the great redemption of the soul.

In the west we have this bad habit of nothing being the individuals fault, you feel down a hole, it's the guy who dug the holes fault!, you got d*unk and attacked a nurse, it's the alcohol to blame, you got d*unk alot, took drugs and enjoyed prostitutes or homosexual sex.... It's this dammed western culture.

Even massacring 50 people in a night club is "Gods will".

I've said before I'm not sure what the answer and in truth it's probably lots of little things like a sense of identity, a sense of inclusion, limiting religious schooling or at least making multi faith schooling compulsory but I'd probably start with putting alot more resources into mental health care and maybe actually building more facilities to house some people, I don't want that to sound harsh but I bump into an awful lot of people on a weekly basis who I don't think should be on a care in the community scheme for their own sake and others

"Osama Bin Laden told a Pakistani interviewer after 9/11: "We love death. The U.S. loves life. That is the big difference between us."

These ideas date back to the Battle of Qadisiyya in the year 636, when the Caliph stated to the Persian commander: “If you don’t [convert to Islam] you should know that I have come to you with an army of men that love death, as you love life.”

What utter crap!

No answer to that is there?

Bin Laden was the leader of al-Qaeda. ISIS and al-Qaeda hate each other. The gunman wasn't even a proper Muslim. Nice try.

Yes but all muslims are the same, everyone knows that!

Name one group of Muslims that drink alcohol please "

Millions - and drugs. You clearly have never been to a Muslim country

"There was always something not quite right about this story and his phone call to say he was doing it "on behalf of Isis"

The fact that only 50 are dead is probably something to be thankful for."

Well said ! I notice the time that white guy went into a black church and killed those black people, that bigot Trump had nothing to say . Funny that?!

"I've had many arguments with people over climate change, when you hear the stuff they come out with you immediately know which dodgy website there repeating the nonsense they are, during the argument you really get a very good idea about why they feel like they do, who put the beliefs into their heads and why they almost always won't listen to the counter argument.

.

What utter drivel.

It was primarily a homophobic hate crime.

Behind that was likely religious indoctrination / own sexuality discomfort. His claim of isil crap probably assuaged his immorality.

Can gay people be homophobic or is that a contradiction in terms?

Of course. If you are Caucasian the assumption is that you're racist until you prove otherwise (guilty until proven innocent) by listing your multicultural credentials.

I've really no idea..... It's certainly an interesting conundrum.....

I kinda guess maybe Vladimir Putin or J Edgar Hoover might hold the true answer to that little doozy......

This is not an issue about religion, it's about homophobia plain and simple, that guy could have easily have been a white atheist, I feel too many emotions about this whole thing I don't even think I can truly articulate what's goin through my mind.

Really?

How can you remove religion from issue when the religion the man was raised in demands that homosexuals be put to death by being cast from high places to be broken on the rocks below? When the mans father who taught him his religion openly stated that his god would punish all homosexuals? Why do you say the man could have been a white atheist when he was a brown first generation Muslim immigrant of Afghan origin?

I would say you have perfectly articulated what is going on in your mind.

The question is whether white people can be racist against other white people?

Because the homophobia I've experienced had nothing to do with anyones religious beliefs. It was all about being hypermasculine, and how If you were a limp wristed mincing little queerboy you weren't a man and had to be taken down. I grew up in Skelmersdale incase anybody saw the Grayson Perry doc the people in that town spent years verbally abusing me in the street physically assault me threaten me with sexual violence bullying harassing and publicly defaming me at every opportunity to the point I attempted suicide more than once and has had a long lasting effect on my mental health. So it's not a problem that's confined to religious extremism.
