we're hearing stories as to why we can justify international intervention in libya, yet not provide it in other middle-east countries

the middle east is fighting for democracy and we seem to be picking our fights very politically based on benefits rather than need

all this whilst we are reducing the defence budget and reducing our defence

The Parlimentary debate today on the Middle East and N/Africa was good fer an understanding, tho still not terribly enlightening..tho its a terribly entangled situ and time for each speech was limited..

Egypt should get involved ..Rifkins right there..

I often wondered what it would be like if Baroness Warsi was ever talked down the way she talks down others. She's one of those politicians who you want to listen to but then you realise she just talks the talk.

I think she was uncharacteristically silent this evening and on shot she looked a little pale and drawn. Bit like the coalition?

And doing it all so very, very badly.

It's almost as if William Hague is trying to get himself sacked to he can get back to a comfortable life of writing books (for which he's well paid) after dinner speaking (for which he's very well paid) and a string of company directorships (the remuneration for which is strangely unavailable).

Being Foreign Secretary just isn't what he and Ffion thought it'd turn out to be.

History seems to tell us that the great and lasting democracies of this world were acheived through internal struggle and the will of the people - in contrast those regimes that were created artificially and/or propped up by meddlesome foreign powers seem to invariably collapse.

If we are to learn anything from this, it is that, painful though it may be to watch the brave citizens of Libya and Egypt give their lives, we need to leave them to win this fight and resolve their struggle for themselves if there is to be any hope of a truly stable government to appear in its place.

I don't think China and Russia wanted to look like the ones to be propping up Gadaffi.... so it was better to abstain and "look the other way"... and the US needed other people to push this so it didn't look like an American Operation

interesting one for me was germany's decision to abstain, especially since the French, British, and Arab League were the ones pushing this.... brazil's president is very much left leaning (not quite as far left as hugo charvez in venezula... not far off though) so not surprised they abstained....

Inteestingly tho ....all of us have rarely had a chance to be better informed with the internet..

That includes the dispossessed and unfettered in autocratic regimes ...well excluding some ISP providers antics recently in the Middle East...

But nevertheless..we can get the real news...not the populist shit we`re fed mainstream ..

I tend to agree with you. Having lived in the Maghreb I have seen that when foreign governments begin to interfere nationals will rally round their present government even if they are corrups and undesirable. They would rather have that than foreign intervention it appears.

It isn't easy to find a recognisable Lib Dem who hasn't swallowed the coalition line to make up the required party balance. There's Hughes and Shirley Williams and that's about it.

When you recall the US reaction to the quite astonishing decision taken by Scotland's Justice Secretary, Kenny MacAskill, to release Megrahi so he could go home to die within 3 months - about 18 months ago - it's hardly surprising they quite fancy blowing up much of the country (Libya, not Scotland - although I suspect bombing Scotland crossed Obama's mind at the time).

Theres some truth in what you sat about China and Russia not wanting to look like they`re propping him up ....I think all the major players are really trying fer stability..

I suspect there's a strong 'let's pay him back for Lockerbie' view in some of the UN votes.

I don`t think so ...who knows tho ...

i second that. the idea that muslims are wholly against the western way of life has been on every propaganda flyer that's been posted along with our money off vouchers for a new government

i believe they do want democracy, they are better educated, they are stronger for it and they are voting with their feet...and fists....and other weapons

"China and Russia only abstained. They've obviously calculated that they'll let the rest of them go in and then take their share of the spoils of war when the dust settles. "

when you say the rest of them "go in"... in the resolution it states that no other countries are allowed to enter libya... so it may well be a civil war for a while...

what the resolution does is take the libyan air force out of the fight....which means the ground forces now don't have air cover.....

Oh ..I think theres a few electoral policies governing limp dick Obama foreign policy at the moment ....I don`t think Lockerbie playsa big part in it tho ...oil price is high on the agenda!

Interesting beyond compare is Saudis 2 fingers to the US ...Suadi`s fear of an Shia uprising ..

Given the precedent ...do we go in to save Saudi rebels ?...fascinating precedent with the UN resolution ...with Iran exerting leverage in Iraq?..Libya wan`t on its own with Lockerbie !..

Agreed; but, by handing Megrahi over for trial at Zeist and paying compensation, Libya put itself squarely in the cross-hairs.

Although the resolution states that it "excludes an occupation force", it also says that it authorises member states to "take all necessary measures" to "protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack."

Therefore land forces are bound to go in; they just won't be "an occupying force". It's all semantics. Anyway the SAS have already been sniffing around, haven't they?

I'm glad that the UN have finally done something though. It's all very well Kelvin Mackenzie showboating on Question Time but civilisation (if it means anything at all) can't just sit back and let fascism stamp its boot on the faces of the innocent.

Actually.. i agree with you, I am not sure what US foreign policy is... where they got it right in Tunisia and Egypt, they have got it wrong in Libya... nowhere near strong enough

as for US and Saudi.... no chance of the US doing a thing!!! Primarily because of the amount that Saudi spend on US arms and planes if nothing else...

actually will be interesting to see if Iran crank up the talk if Bahrain with saudi backing do really really crackdown on shia protesters..... tomorrow afternoon could be a flashpoint....

They are certainly compromised by Saudis oil ...a familar refrain I know ..but with some merit ...and his domestic concerns are pressing..hes mindful of reelection ...I don`t think the American public are ready fer more American troops in body bags ..the Jewish vote is important to ...with Iran playing politics in the region ...Israel ain`t to happy ...

When a mad dictator issues a chilling warning to opposition forces that "he's coming to get them and they can expect no mercy" it is right and proper for the rest of the world to step in and say "No, you're not!"

The UN has ruled out a ground invasion of Libya so a no-fly zone will be enforced so that Gadaffi cannot use his warplanes against his own civilians.

How can any decent person argue against preventing the wholesale slaughter of people who's only 'crime' is wanting to be free.

anyone remember what position we were in just before the falklands?

a defence review that was seeing us breaking up our ships and then having to re-think a bit when the incumbent government realised the error of their ways and decided they were needed out there.

touch of deja vu or am i in the wrong thread?

nahh i remember it well ,no one can deny if they are not needed, they are not needed, BUT ,to get rid of your aircraft carriers and eyes in the sky is a bit like saying " we are staying at home and fight it out amongst yourselves" for 10 years ,

Which is fine as long as as your not a PM talking a talk and realying on the rest to do the fighting..it makes us a bit like the little bloke at the back shouting .."go on hit him "..
