England fans jailed...

Two fans jailed for 2 and 3 months.

What a disgrace and miss justice for those just trying to defend themselves against the thugs..

Nobody started trouble nor was it instigated until approached by French Russian and others..

Oh and noted that France didn't get a ban warning did they hmmmmm weird that.

Presumably as France is a modern civilised country they've had a fair trial and been found guilty of a crime. Without being present and seeing the prosecution and defence cases we have to aassume they were heard and found guilty correctly.

I think the real England fans in the stadium you know the ones the true football suporters have behaved brilliantly considering the violence against them. As for the thugs who just go there to cause trouble well I've no opinion on them. Op sorry you had to come home but you prob have made the rite desision. Xxx

I can assure you coming home was right.. England fans in the bars were loud and singing as we do.. no more than this.. odd d*unk but nothing to suspect trouble over.. and then boom attacked by the organised gangs..

Most were so well behaved and others were just trying to protect themselves.. no more no less..

So just a message to those that want to come here and comment .. unless you were there then please don't judge my OP.. you seen the news that's all.

Again unless you were there then please don't make up defensive stories..

It was atrocious to have that type of attack and then the police actually joined in..

So... at the time of trying to defend our good nation and bodies the police attacked too and there was no option..

Please feel free to go there at a time like that and say.. oh please don't hit me please don't attack us with knives..

You too will throw a bottle.

I've been in situations I've had to talk myself out of or love away from. Have never ended up jailed, stabbed nor have thrown bottles.

Granted there are some very violent and hostile people coking out of Russia. But I'm not going to feel sympathy for 2 found guilty of the same thing.

Riot police don't have time to establish who is innocent or not when they're right in the middle of a flashpoint. Restoring order is the primary concern and agitated England fans who might well have been defending themselves still need to be brought back under control.

What you didn't say, OP, is that three French nationals and one Austrian are also in court this week and two Russians have been expelled from France.

this..

there's a difference between defending oneself from organised attacks and throwing bottles at the police in any scenario will only end like this..

yes one could question the tactics of the police in how they handled it but many other's either got out of harms way or fought those who were attacking them..

the French were going to come down hard upon those they deemed to be culpable given the levels of violence..

interesting to hear the French interior minister admit what many out there have said that there are a large number of organised Russian hooligans who are only there to fight, lets hope for everyone's safety that they manage to stop any more attacks..

No I didn't fail to say... but its not up to me as a Brit to defend other nationalities.. why would I .. that's just wrong really.. this is about the English situation not other nations.. that's their choice to make their own defence.. So no didn't fail in any sense.

Wow. Racism and misogyny it just two sentences.

You must be quite the catch.

It should be an apostrophe not a comma in 'country's'.

Oh and it's 'know', not 'now'.

Just the one questionmark.

Capital 'T' on typical.

And it should be 'Typical of women' or 'Typical of a woman'.

Other than that, your English is impeccable.

What is it they say? If you can't speak the language...

It's very difficult to comment without having been in that situation. But there are many reports from reliable sources that say many well behaved fans were attacked by armed organised gangs. Both local and Russian groups. If your cornered by a mob with iron bars what do you do? The French riot police tactic was to either do nothing or use tear gas and batons indiscriminately. Radio journalist gave an account of England fans singing and having a laugh when a large group of Russians gathered and started putting on balaclavas they pointed it out to police who did nothing and waited for them to attack then charged at both lots. Another journalist gave an account of Irish and polish fans singing together, swapping shirts wtc when a gang of locals cane to cause trouble, when an old polish guy pointed it out they threatened to gas him! Eventually they kettles the French fans for two hours. Very little of this in papers or on news. Anyone would think our media was unreliable, biased and working to an agenda.....

I have been going to away games for 25 years now and it would take an awful lot to cut my loses and go home.. YEs im a true supporter but all in all I value my life and their is no place for what us as English were subjected to.

our reputation precedes us unfortunately. And come Thursday regardless of the result against Wales, England will be going home I fear.

"It's very difficult to comment without having been in that situation.

Have you stopped to ask yourself why?

funny thing is some of us were going to games in this country in the 70's when violence was all part of the day out for some, it had nothing to do with the game or understanding the structures of it then and it still doesn't..

anyone who wasn't there will only have the view from friends out there, the media and the respected and credible sources who are saying that it was organised attacks by the Russians, pretty sure everyone is in agreement that such actions are wrong and people are right to defend themselves against that and attacks by others..

but if you throw bottles at the police and get caught your going to be done for it..

you don't have to know the offside rule or be a 'true fan' to work that one out..

Marseille has always been a violent port and city, its law enforcement and justice has been just as robust. If you go to the city that is the home of the French Foreign Legion, kick off and get caught, no matter the provocation, you can expect to be slapped down hard.

I wouldn't want to. In my opinion football attracts this sort of mindless thug mentality. If it's not the supporters (i appreciate it's the minority) it's the players themselves. Get the players to be role models and not louts who fight, rape, do drugs, speed and then get hit with a feather of the law and then they gloat about it unashamedly. These hooligans are no different just on less coin than the footballers themselves that's all. We all saw this coming way before the contest started hence them stopping the alcohol.

Tried, convicted and sentenced over a weekend. Doesn't sound like enough to time to build a fair case for or against anyone.

Defending yourself against a Russian mob running 50 deep or a Marsaille mob running 70 deep sounds more like survival than mindless violence on the part of the England fans.

the guy who is the chair of the football supporters federation ran away as did others..

totally accept that its wrong and the police should have acted against the Russians if they were able to do so to prevent the need for it..

and not all would have been able to run and had to defend themselves which is what most of us would do if we had to..

but you seem to be trying to defend or justify the guys who have been jailed for throwing bottles at the police because the Russians and others attacked the English fans..?

On the reports I saw after the match the majority of English fans were trying to get away from the Russians but because they were in the stadium they couldn't. I don't know but I assume that it would be simalur outside the stadium. It isn't easy to just walk away. But I don't condone the guys who joined in with the violence. Xxx

"Correct me if im wrong (im sure I will be)but aren't the French on a high state of terrorist alert.? you think so.If that is the case how did the russains manage to get the flares they used into the grounds.?

Exelent point "

worrying that they were able to and also the apparent level of organisation from the Russians would one hopes have the French authorities a bit more on their toes as the tournament progresses..

I have walked away plenty of times. Defending yourself is not throwing a bottle.

Everything was captured on camera and those who did just defend and move away seem to not be in jail.

Before you say it. Been there. Done it. Been to much worse and dangerous. Done it again.

My point is the majority of fans are there for a good time. These attacks on them are awful. You know as well as I do that there is a minority gagging for a dust up. Some of those got a dust up. Every country is the same.

Look on it as the qualifiers for the next world cup in Russia which will be carnage!

Huddersfield

We have had our terrible times with hooligans, it destroyed football. But we have taken massive steps to deal with it. Most of our nut cases are reporting to police stations every day and have no passport, banning orders have worked well. Yes there are a few idiots and for them I have zero sympathy, lock them up with a chocolate key for me.

But every other countries idiots wants to make a name for themselves by attacking English supporters. All the European nations have "Ultras" that are largely un-policed idiots hell bent on violence. Because of our historical reputation other nations seem unwilling to be objective and protect English fans.

No the UK media don't support Russia, but they do two things: report stories in a way to maximise drama and sales and feed their own agendas, currently related to a referendum soon.

UEFA and FIFA won't rock the boat with Russia as sponsors are heavily weighted in Russian companies and the World Cup is there in two years.

Colin Murray on Talksoort was there as an Irish fan with the Poles which was he said friendly and fantastic until gangs of French hooligans turned up, bet it won't be in the papers.

Just because it's in the express or on news at ten doesn't make it true.

I hate hooliganism, the lunatic morons have ruined the game but if all your doing is having a beer and a sing at a tournament you don't deserve to attacked by armed gangs, if you are you should be protected by the authorities, if your not what do you do? Full of adrenaline, fear and beer prevented from running away? Lie down and get a kicking, ask the nice man in the balaclava with an iron bar if he fancies tea and biscuits?

Why have UEFA not threatened to throw out France? Or Geemany and Ukraine after their pre match fighting?

It's just too easy to look at the Daily Fail and say oh here we go again.

It's not a crime to wear an England shirt drink beer and sing that's all the vast majority were doing.

And don't waste your breath telling me I don't know what I'm on about. I'd put pretty good money on it I've been in the middle of more gang violence than you've had hot dinners (to coin a phrase) sunshine.

I feel no need to show empathy toward those who have no one else to blame for their actions but themselves.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to but it probably says lot about you.

My point was the cops in these situations don't just defend they Atack aswell .

in that sort of situation all police may well take that approach, much better than being bottled to be decisive and take control..

still does not sway my opinion that anyone chucking bottles at any police, be that in this country or elsewhere and being caught will be in bother..

if they have got the wrong people then there may be an appeal if there is evidence to support that..

What's even more worrying is some Russian MP has stated that fighting at football matches isn't that bad and he congratulated the Russian thugs for their performance!

This from a country hosting the World Cup in two year's time.

Besides what happened in the ground.is organized meetings between rival gangs. And that includes England fans. I've been to lots of football matches. I know what goes on.

You seen the news.. you said itso I'm suppose to ignore the pictures and news. And listen to you for the truth ?

I never once in this thread did i say anyone had to believe. . But it have stated facts. .

Point ? my point is. I see the pictures, I read the news. I see the reports, and come to the conclusion not all English fans are poor little angels who are getting bullied. And only act in self defense. You are trying to convince me otherwise "

Not trying to convince a complete stranger anything ... i stated facts... their is a difference

I cba to scroll up through the thread so was anyone actually there or spoken to someone who was caught up in the event?

Isn't though, the minority of fans on both sides that cause the problem along with inept policing from the authorities.?

I know someone who was there & they said it was unbelievably scary when the Russians stormed over & started on fans.

Probably every club in England have a firm. Gangs of lads who just go to matches to fight. Do you reckon some of them maybe there. Or are they all banned ?

Driveshaft I am an England fan and was in Marsaille in 98. I am in Lens vs Wales on Thursday and St Etienne on Monday after.

You ask what you do, the simple answer in not allow yourself to be caught in that situation. Drink with your mates outside the city, lots of us knew that game would be trouble hence why I returned my tickets.

You need to be smarter than the thugs!

"Why does trouble seem to follow english fans

Because in the past England were followed by the hooligan firms but are not do much now !

But the other countries hooligans haven't realised this yet or don't care !

I give up here... that will get chicken comments from the outcast but hey..

I wont sit here again fellow Brits and defend what it was like against what they think they would of done..

Again..... walk away.... still cant get over that comment.

the guy who is the chair of the football supporters federation ran away as did others..

totally accept that its wrong and the police should have acted against the Russians if they were able to do so to prevent the need for it..

and not all would have been able to run and had to defend themselves which is what most of us would do if we had to..

but you seem to be trying to defend or justify the guys who have been jailed for throwing bottles at the police because the Russians and others attacked the English fans..?

Please see that some just couldn't walk away... in a predicament where they had no choice but to defend.. moving away wasn't an option given to some.

yes and repeatedly iv'e accepted and acknowledged that fact but its the lads who have been jailed for throwing bottles that this is about and you don't seem willing to accept that if you do that and get caught your in bother..?

im not saying that's its acceptable im saying that this was done on the defensive... without initial intent..

so to defend themselves from the Russians the English threw bottles at the French police?

Please read the thread if you join late...

Was stated much earlier that the police also attacked but this was due to the English defending themselves against Russian batons and knives ... is this ok ?

Those two jolly England "fans" were jailed for jolly well having a spiffing football fun time.

They threw jolly bottles at the foreigners in a spirit of jolly fun.

OP, not really an act of self-defence, was it?

Again... how was your visit whilst there ????. Or did you not go"

No, OP, I was not there.

Did you see those two so-called English fans throwing their bottles.

Yes, the French police are ugly. Yes, there are unpleasant Russians and French. Yes, there are unpleasant English.

I understand what the op is trying to say I think. Englands Hooligan reputation in the past make them targets for the new breed of hooligan. They are seen as the fans to have a go at to make the headlines. The last 3 or 4 tournaments went without much aggro, and England were actually being praised for turning the old days around and were getting to be known as party people rather than hooligans. There are a few mindless morons that do try and cause trouble but from what I hear from a friend who is still out there, its the Russians and local French that are attacking the English

Have to say your story does seem to reflect a number of posts I've seen by other returning fans. And yes if attacked, retreat and if not able to retreat then defend however ....

Throwing stuff back at the police is going to get you noticed, regardless of what went before it's an aggressive act. There are also tales of English 'fans' (I do hate to use the word in this context) singing prevocative songs and shouting "where are you IS?" ... which I have to admit made me laugh at the stupidly of the challenge.

Glad you got back safely and though I applaud your published 'eye witness' accounts I fear that you are on a hiding to nothing.

agreed and some reputable people have endorsed that but chucking bottles at the police will go down badly if caught which the OP seems to think is either justified because of the attacks by the Russians and others..

There are far too many naive people on this thread who've never faced a situation out with their control that could have life or death consequences.

Let's see what happens if the Russians progress and play Croatia or Italy.

These guys may or may not be guilty of something but let's support them until we're sure.
