First we drank some whiskey
Then we drank some gin
Then we drank tequila
I think that's what did me in
Then we drank some brandy
And the women had a dance |

If things in Japan turn out as it looks as if they might the UK might well find ourselves having to import huge amounts of coal (with all the implications that'll have for the balance of payments) to run coal-fired power stations just to keep the lights on. |

As with each of these disasters that occur, we as a species learn from it to improve our technology for the future. It doesn't prevent another catastrophe somewhere else, of course, but I'd bet my last pound that Japanese structural engineers have already started planning how to make future nuclear power plants impervious to earthquakes.
We're fortunate over here though as we don't have earthquakes, well nothing big enough to even cause a slight flutter in the trees anyway. |

It wasn't the earthquake which caused the problem - it was the tsunami. We saw the damage the Boxing Day tsunami did, many thousands of miles away from the source, back in 2004.
I happen to believe nuclear power is incredibly safe but that won't stop the scaremongers calling for an end to nuclear power generation in the UK and both Hunterston B and Torness are due to be replaced soon. |

totally agree about the scaremongering.
my ex is a nuc engineer and apparently what is happening in japan is textbook...which is apparently a good thing as they can kind of anticipate each step and adapt accordingly.
would not be possible unless the facility was top notch.
not that there aren't dangers...there are with all kind of fuels. it's about understanding and managing them |

I don't think the textbook said anything about a big f*cking wave knocking out the back-up coolant power supply |

hahaha...think he was referring to the events as they unfold, not the actual cause lol |

2/3 of the cost of building a nuclear power station is spent of safety. Ok, so nobody can predict the fifth biggest earthquake in recorded history nor the level of damage it would wreak, but it shows they take safety very seriously indeed, and the events in Japan can only lead to safer power stations all over the world once they've learned what happened and how to prevent it in the future. |

Well, technically yes, it was the tsunami, but the earthquake caused the tsunami, and those two things are highly unlikely to ever happen to the UK. I'd say our biggest threat would be from a hurricane like the one we had in '87 or worse. |
