They seem to be more popular in Scotland than south of the border
Who likes them; thinks they are pretentious and for show offs; or thinks they are there to hide the age of the car!

Doesnt matter what others think jay has the same on all his cars and the number follows on. My mum has her name but only so she knows which is hers. Most people i know have them. Some are expensive and aome not |

I have one on mine and I'm just a down to earth guy, as for the age thing they'll always look the right age or older as you can't put a younger plate on it. |

I thought that but the car you swap with has to have an mot , so if you swap for an older number then surely the older car will get the number off the newer car ..... think thats what I'm saying .

I think they are only apeal to arrogant show offs who think that they impress people and don't want others to know that there car is as old as it really is.
Mine says my surname and I love it. Had it for years and would never part with it. |

I just couldn't resist so I bought 2 "
I don't begrudge anyone taking pleasure spending their money on things that make them happy.....

You don't swap plates. Just re-asign them so you can put the plate from an older car onto a newer car out the newer cars plate does not go onto the older one. The older one will be re-issued a relevant plate if it is still road worthy.
And although you can't put a newer plate on than the cars year of registration, if you out an obviousley older plate onto and obviousley newer car you have effectively hidden the age of the car by having a plate that clearly does nt reflect the cars age. |

No you old number plate will normally stay on a retention. Think I've had mine on 7 or 8 different cars and it's normally the cars old plate go's back on it |

"5 characters on every bike.
Means small plates are legal font/stroke/width "
Same here, can't be doing with a massive 5x7 plate in a bike so have a short plate that fits a small board while still being legit. |

Without needing any alteration it just reads the same as my surname so I like it. It's pretty cool, especially as most friends refer to me by my surname only.
I'm a a bit of a number plate nerd and used to buy and sell them now and then to make a few quid. Quite liked the way working out what would be cheap to buy but sell well was a bit like working out a puzzle.
Nowadays anything decent tends to get snapped up by companies that specialise in this or get withheld by DVLA to go to auction.

I've seen some funny ones in the past. I also got reversed into by a older lady once who proceeded in running over my foot, she had personalised plates on her expensive merc strangely the police couldn't locate her when I reported for hit and run. Was she driving illegally? |

Seen a car with a personalised plate on recently, eBay ad says it's worth £500+ so i done a bit of research on it... worth about £110 to sell.... they are not worth buying these days, just buy a newish car with the original plate on it |

It's not all about money. I paid very little for mine. They are a play on my name and get a lot of giggles so I like them |

This thread is funny.... people posting actual reg plates... go onto the government site and they don't exist
There's ways of finding out if they are false... would be funny if some were real, but in reality they are only a dream |

I found this on the last thread about plates.
People saying they had seen played which don't exist and even some claiming to own plates that either didn't exist or were not on the cars they said they were.
I'll have a look and see which it was later but one of the best combination I have seen was either ABC 123 or 123 ABC which must be with serious money and was on a £500 battered old Fiesta. |

"Each to their own but for me i wouldnt have one. I just see it as a waste of money. They can be an investment i believe though if very sought after xx"
Mine cost me £250 20 years ago and I've had a solid offer of £5k for it but wouldn't let it go.
A car just wouldn't feel like mine without my plate on it. But then I am a bit sad like that. |

mine is the nickname of the football team I support. It's a great conversation starter and get to meet new people because of it.
Better than having your name because only people you know realise it's your name. |

I gave a private plate on retention, it came with the last car I had, it only makes sense when on a specific car, one day I might own a car I can use it on again |

Car for business is just a normal plate, car for fun came with a private plate on and I couldn't be bothered with the paperwork to change it.
Wag has a private plate on hers, each to their own.
I did see one that read BE64GLE and they had an I ?? Beagles bumper sticker which I thought was s bit too much |

"I had n900 cbr on a 900 cbr was definitely a conversation starter at bike meets"
Nice.
I had H15 GSX on a GSXR and
X 800SA X on a hayabusa
I600 CC on a 1600cc Wildstar
G8LD W on a goldwing
Sold separately from the bikes I made some money on them.

Since last year, the retention renewal period has been extended to 10 years. |

Really! Didn't know that so thanks for the info.
Mine is based on a 10 reg and spells my name perfectly (if you allow a 0 as D). Bought for 395 from DVLA, from what I seen prob worth 10k, assuming you can find someone with that amount of spare cash! |

Just transferred my private plate onto my new 2016 car which I have just bought, so in my case, yes it hides the age of the car, it makes it look 4 years older than what it is,
but it has my initials and name which im happy with |
