Other EU countries want to Leave EU

Interesting news report this morning on television stating many other countries in the EU now want a referendum with regard to leaving same as UK
The main part of the report was from Italy but mentioned many other countries
Looks like we are not alone
Is the EU headed for further disaster and demolition should we desert a sinking ship, or stand strong like the captain of the ship and be last to drown (or first) |

That's not even a question. How about asking a non biased question? You might get a better quality of response even if is one where some answers are not what you want to hear. At least then, there could be an adult and mature considered debate. |

No.
They just have a different way of doing things. They always appear to resolve differences in the end, after much careful negotiation.
Seems sensible to me, just imagine what we could achieve if our politicians worked together instead of the petty bickering we have now...

It won't be over - either way. The result will only be a step in a certain direction. All the issues raised won't be resolved. The losing side will be saying 'I told you so' for every single thing that goes wrong. |

It's not even a question. It's a statement. It's biased because he says 'further disaster' implying that the EU has been disastrous. Some may think it hasn't been, therefore presupposing that stance, makes the statement biased. |

i think the poll he refers to is the one where only poland has a majority in favour of the eu. The eu was set up as a tariff free zone. What it is now and if it's still relevant in today,s climate hasn't been touched on |

Euro sceptism is on the rise all over Europe, but how many would actually vote to leave right now?
Of the whole 28 I would say very few. However there are a few notable ones who could just jump especially if Britain gives the lead.
In Austria a right wing anti EU candidate came within a whisker of(and some would say was cheated out of) becoming president. If given a vote they could quite easily go.
In the Scandinavian countries EU resentment is running very high and although Sweden will probably resist for a while, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Denmark and/or Finland demanded a referendum.
Germany? At the moment forget it but next September Merkel will be gone and the AFD are making headway there. A new CDU/CSU leader could well do a Cameron and promise something to try and neutralise them.
France? Again at the moment forget it, but a recent poll showed that around 50% of the electorate wanted a referendum. Should Marine Le Pen come close in (or even win) the next presidential election then all bets would be off.
The Benelux countries wont rock the boat. The EU is far too profitable for them. Ditto most of the former Warsaw pact countries.
Spain is an interesting one. I don't see them leaving the EU anytime soon but there is a general election later this month and all eyes will be on how well "Podemos" the new anti austerity party polls.
I didn't see the news report so I would guess that the OP is a bit more up to date than me but I do know there is a lot of disquiet in Italy and a fair amount of support for the Five Star Movement.
So finally Greece? It's anybody's guess really but let's see what happens after the next bailout payments become due next month. Funny thing is that the British result could well influence the negotiations between them and Merkel. Will the Greeks hold the referendum gun to Merkels head? Interesting for sure.

Politicians working together? I'll ask my great great great great great grandchildren that one...I'll send a letter now... lol. They can't work together in their own parties without pulling the whip. It costs an absolute fortune holding EU together...its like running 10 more countries on top of the existing countries in Europe. |

They missed their chance didn't they. It's actually a very good model to look at. I hear so much crap about loosing out and how it will cost us to leave with contracts etc etc etc...hark back to when German and other fault to keep them in and PAID them to stay. Their debts were reduced.....can you imagine what pressures are being put upon our government to stay! We'd do very well to leave and reclaim control over our military, our boarders, our employment laws, our tribunals, our- just about everything....I have to wear black underwear which are made from European plastics now! I want my woolly one back |

I don't really care about what other countries do. I just want us out of the EU. If the European social experiment collapses in on itself I'd much rather we were safely in a lifeboat as the sinking ship goes down. |

Because their government aren't prepared to give them the option. Regardless of if their is or isn't a "majority" wanting one (I haven't seen any figures one way or another). I'm not saying anything either way on that...but it is a fact that a population cannot call a referendum. Only a government can....as Cameron did because of his fear of UKIP. But at least he kept his promise on this...unlike Brown who promised a referendum before signing any further treaties...then promptly signed the Lisbon treaty without giving us one... |

You have hit the nail on the head with that.
The politicians can say anything today in the full knowledge that they wont have to deliver on it.
Cameron could, for example, say "no more treaties without a referendum' or "I will never let Britain join the Euro" or "I will never sign Schengen" but he knows damn well that he wont be PM when the time comes to deliver.
Any future PM does not have to stand by Cameron's promises. |

A tariff free zone for which we have to pay billions in EU membership fees to access the single market. By definition then it's not exactly free is it. |

In fact if you look at the groups promoting this; it is by and large the right wing/ ultra right wing / nationalist political-parties that are saying it; eg Marine lePen and the Front Nationale in France, and so on....
Polling shows interest in leaving amongst the populations; but when analysed, it is mostly dissatisfaction with incumbent governments that gives rise to it

To a certain extent yes. It is mainly right wing (but not always "ultra" or "far" as some people like to paint them) party's that are eurosceptic, but what you have to look at is how much support they are getting, quite often from people that would not usually go in that direction.
Like her or not, Marine Le Pen has huge support in France and it was only a stitch up by the other party's that stopped her making considerable gains in the last regional elections.
As I said in my earlier post, Austria came within a whisker of electing a right wing eurosceptic president only a few weeks ago.
I would agree that in some countries the eurosceptic party's are small and some of the dissatisfaction is aimed at national governments.
However ignoring it and carrying on regardless, as Brussels seems keen to do, is really playing the Ostrich, and when you bury your head so deep in the sand your arse is there to be bitten. |
