Has anyone experienced their mental health improving with weightloss or know of anyone whose mental health has improved with weightloss. I mean significantly.

As some know ive lost an awful lot of weight. Some also know i can be very poorly.

But my mental health is the best its ever been. But ive worked hard.

Someone asked me yesterday if i thought it was to do with my weight loss and my honest answer was i dont know

If you're on a diet and eating less sugar or refined grains then yes that can certainly impact your mental health for the better.

You'll also have to expend less energy the less you weigh, down to a healthy body weight.

The same goes for increased exercise and the endorphins as a result.

But whatever you're doing, if it's working for you then keep working it!

Definitely related.

Many with depression also find that weightless and a healthier lifestyle in general helps immensely with mental stability.

on the road to nowhere in particular

I believe there is a connection. It is also affected by fitness levels

I know someone who lost quite a bit of weight, got depressed, and gained it all back. I know it's only anecdotal, but I though I'd share.

Exercise is supposed to make you happier, though.

I lost 11st when I woke up from the depression of my first marriage failing, I remember it well, I was particularly down because I had got myself trapped in a changing room in a clothes shop the day before, and it was 10:30 in the morning, and I was outside the local shop with a can of lager and an 18 pack of walkers crisps, I looked at myself in the reflection of the shop window, and didn't recognise myself, I went and bought a pair of trainers and started running, cut out the comfort food and started taking care of myself again, within 12 months I was down from just over 25st to 14st, I've put some back on since, but I find it harder to shift it now because I'm so damn happy with myself lol.

right but would you say your mental had already started to improve which caused you to diet.

Confidence yes thats increased, zest for like yes.

But i cant think that losing the weight was the key factor for me.

I went on a diet cause i just didnt want to be fat anymore.

Also had you always been large or was it depression that caused it

More energy will hopefully make your reserves of mental resilience larger to cope better with daily challenges. A bonus is sleeping should be better.

The weight gain was a symptom of the depression, and it became a cycle of being depressed because I was fat and lonely, and getting fatter and lonlier because I was depressed, I just stopped looking after myself, I was in a deepening pit that it was increasingly more difficult to get out of, it took a couple of shocks to jolt me back to reality

I'm not sure what you exactly do to lose weight but it's a well known fact that exercise and leading a more active lifestyle is very good for mental health issues.

Couple with feeling better from eating healthy, clean food, and increased confidence from the achievement of losing weigh,t and feeling you look better and I can see why it would.

For any mental health questions always talk to a doctor or assigned medical staff first as I doubt you will get good information from us fabby swingers. Wishing you good luck and happy times ahead

Does it come down to the fact that you're just happier with in yourself for achieving such a great weight loss. Wish ever way you are looking good and it's great to hear happy.

I was depressed throughout most of my marriage and even though I had a high metabolism I still managed to pile the weight on... It didn't help that I was also diagnosed with an under active thyroid during that time which helped with the weight gain... Subsequently when my marriage ended, I lost 5 stone in just under 5 months and went from a size 22 to a 12, which is what I had been before I was married.. My depression lifted eventually but that's been replaced with panic attacks and anxiety but I still feel a hell of a lot happier slimmer than when I was fat

Of course not. Just wasn't sure where the post was leading as personality disorders or depression are something I wouldn't want to give a glib answer to. And you are giving me a kick to exercise as my problem is lack of sleep.

Energy levels, different chemical balance in the body, eating different foods, ability to deal with what life's throwing at you better. I would think it all has effect not just one or the other. (I can kind of relate as I lost 8 stone, but mostly down to a change in meds)

I suffered with my mental health. Also i have just lost 2st in 8 weeks. If you are working out to lose weight then it releases endorphins which helps you feel good. But i found it was helping me to become happier within myself thus it has noticably improved my moods and mental health people have told me.

so if youve had your meds changed would you just go with a bit of both.

To be honest i hadnt thought about it till i was asked.

Im just happy everything is how it is but it got me thinking

I wonder if with age and managing symptoms for a length of time, you get better at managing your mental health too? I know someone who doesn't let herself get over tired, avoids alcohol and eats very healthy that has helped her. She's learnt what helps her maintain a better state of mind.

Chams or Socials

I lost weight, got to where I was really, really happy, felt absolutely amazing. Then I found out the ex cheated, asked him to leave& my depression kicked in. My confidence totally wiped. All the weight has gone back on (but slowly coming off again) still no confidence but happier. But I am still taking anti-depressants so I have no idea what's what or why!!!

It's probably a combination of using the tools, feeling better about yourself and being able to do more.
