According to media reports a petition calling too officially restrict the use of fireworks has now reached the magic 100000 mark sparking an MP debate as to whether a 4 days per year limit should be introduced

Apparently some pet owners feel this is a justifiable measure...

Personally, I think fireworks should be restricted to only organised displays. There are hundreds injured every year by fireworks and many show no consideration for others when they have their fireworks at home.

In the past, we've had people in our local area setting of fireworks as late as 2am. We've also had cars damaged by fireworks and been left with a load of rubbish to pick up in the morning.

Fireworks were a cunning ploy by Darwin to rid the world of stupid people. The video clips on YouTube explaining how to blow your arse off with a Chinese banger are int the great scheme of things an attempt to improve the breeding stock for the entire human race

fair points....

Although aparently its seems the main motive behind the petition is to limit the potential of animals suffering from stress related issues caused by fireworks going off....

I used to quite like living in central London around Bonfire Night - kids setting off crackers and fireworks every couple of minutes gave the faint impression of living in Gaza.

Some boys did that to me and my grandchildren a couple of Halloweens ago. It's not really that funny.

.

I've personally never owned a dog that's been bothered by fireworks, the current one sits there watching them, although I've got friends who have dogs who do get wound up by them!.

I think maybe a certain time frame for sales would be a sensible compromise

My own little world

I don't mind fireworks, though having to listen to them for 4 hours a night for a whole week, can get very boring.

I used to know an old boy who had fought in the Somme. November was a nightmare for him. I remember his wife telling me he would sit trembling at the noise and wet himself.

Yet a week later it was Rememberance Sunday and we were lauding him a hero.

I was only a kid at the time but felt it wrong he should suffer just so we could celebrate something that happened centuries ago.

Northern Ireland has restrictions. You need a licence to buy and use them.

I do rather like the Darwin theory; unfortunately the idiots seldom actually completely remove themselves from the gene pool, so money is spent in hospitals treating them, and they also injure others,

So it's not a very efficient icient way of improving the human race.

If it only removes one idiot, the entertainment value will have been worth it

Yep, and all the younger lads with PTSD from war zones as well.

Definitely restrict it to a couple of days a year.

I've just remembered, my kids were very noise sensitive when they were younger and we had night after night of them hiding under their duvets, sobbing and screaming and shaking because they hated the noise.

I'm sure they aren't the only kids.

Fireworks night here seems to lead straight into Diwali so it's two weeks straight of fireworks.

Coming from both a pet owner and pyromaniac, I agree there has to be some control, 4 days is not enough.

As a kid I remember three months before bonfire night, the area sounded like Beirut.

Not only soldiers from the first World War, I know many who foght in Iraq and Afganistan who flatten on the floor from the sound of unexpected fireworks.

Fireworks only used to be sold on the run up to November 5th, now they are sold all year round and the drug pushers round here use them to signal when they have fresh supplies

At the same time can we ban dogs and private transport (including push bikes) for the same reasons as stated above...

Fuck me, if we banned or restricted everything that was irritating, noisy, dangerous, messy or annoyed the neighbours then we'd live in a very sterile environment!

I completely agree. We had a huge explosion at a fireworks retailer in Oct 14 resulting in the loss of 2 lives (1 was a colleague) & more injuries. It was 5 mins from where I live & was absolutely devastating.

That'll be the next thing, they'll limit the use to Guy Fawkes Night only, then a mob of other cultures will complain that their festivals are being stamped on.

If they limit to 4 days a year what days would they be? Fireworks night, New year's eve and what else.

In Cambridge it tradition for the college May Balls all to have fireworks, and they are on different nights, Independence Day for the thousands of American military personnel and families who live over here, religious festivals which celebrate with fireworks. How would they celebrate?

I do wonder how it could possibly work??

I think it's intended to limit private use of fireworks and sale to the public.

Big professional displays would be held under licence.
