If any of you guys were going out to a club or bar for a night out..what would you want to hear? Apart from the commercial stuff like Rihanna Katie Perry Taylor swift Chris brown etc...?
I only ask as I am looking to set my own nights up but want to move away from playing the same thing you hear everywhere; I like good music no matter who the artist is: therefore am wondering if there are others who agree and want to go out to hear plain and simply 'GOOD MUSIC' regardless of genre |

I like the idea of different decades night but on the downside it excludes people not maybe aware in that particular decade, if you see where I'm coming from.. I play a lot of genres, metal isn't one of them I did grow up in the 80's and 90's so am aware of some good metal. I have influences ranging from ska reggae dub roots dancehall hip hop house jungle drum and bass chillout revival lovers rock soca swing indie Motown uk garage with a few others..I really wanna expose people to different things with a smooth melodic mix of different music styles...not being content with playing mainstream bangers all the time..gets super boring doing that |

I think your problem might be finding a venue to indulge the set, unless it's your own place. It's a nice thought to say to he'll with genres but it doesn't tend to draw a crowd.

Thank you for for getting involved...I say to chop it up, to be that difference..a break from the norm..knowing and getting it right, the next song to be dropped or mixed it...mix it up as a 'mix' suggests...but I do hear though, that drawing a crowd to start may be hard but nothing ventured nothing gained...

Also: surf (early 60's), psychedelia (late 60's), acidhouse (90's) alternative (let's say 80's)....
How about alphabetical? Tonight is gonna be songs beginning wiv 'm'....I suppose x night might be a bit slow.

ok ... that's nice and portable. check out owners of small bars .... you know the sort of thing ... cafe bars, craft beer bars etc ... you can D.I your kit through their in house amps, nice and simple. it'll give you a chance to check out what stuff is going down with the crowd in your area ..... link your advertising flyers and posters to a mixcloud page obviously, but better still have a look at internet radio stations and get yourself set up with one of those ..... just play as much as you can and talk to everybody.... you never know who they are and how they can help ..... don't be cocky. remember, in music you'll meet everyone twice. once on their way up and once on their way down. good luck |

From my experience people go nuts for the trap style stuff, slowed, down bassed up.
Massively important too as any musician performing for a crowd. Crowd control is half of the battle? Get them on your side and your life becomes a whole lot easier.

And as a personal recommendation, look at incorporating a kaoss pad into your equipment.
Live effects processing and sampling the manipulation that little pad gives you at the touch of a finger tip is insane |

From my experience people go nuts for the trap style stuff, slowed, down bassed up.
Massively important too as any musician performing for a crowd. Crowd control is half of the battle? Get them on your side and your life becomes a whole lot easier.

But there in lies the problem as we all know we can't please everybody so my idea would be doing something where u don't actually know what your gonna hear, so you have no preconceived notions about what your gonna hear...all in aide of exposure to music that may have slipped people's attention because of the mainstream garbage (although not all of it) polluting the airwaves |

i agree .... eclectic and not necassarily flash beat matching every tune and chop the genres up ..... keep tech to a minimum ... i've been doing this myself for 25 odd years and it still works. |

Sometimes it’s good to hear remixed versions of popular songs, such as the down tempo version of Bonnie and Clyde (Beyonce/Jay Z). I always thought that Shy FX’S Feelings would get a crowd moving or the Old Skool tune I Need UR Lovin. But obviously it all depends on the crowd you hope to attract or have to play for. |

Unless you produce too, DJing is a very tough game these days. I've been doing it professionally for about sixteen years. Clubs are closing left right and center and everybody wants to be a DJ.
The gigs I get paid well for are pure, classic,trashy pop which luckily I'm good at and quite enjoy. But in an ideal world, I'd play a mix of disco, rock, electronica and classic house, smattering of rave. A bit like 2 Many DJs in a wig.
But if you really enjoy it, go for it. Get yourself a venue, prepare to make a loss for a while and don't drink too many free drinks (rookie mistake)  |

What saying makes sense for real. I have played out over the years, but was mostly private party's with a few club and bar nights. I have a lot of solid connections out there from over the years, but want to do this on my own with a few others; as I want this to be something different. If it works it works if it don't it don't I guess, nothing ventured nothing gained!!
