Brilliant film in my opinion, but was such a difficult film to watch.
I saw a couple on 'This Morning' who have a 2year old son who is exceptionally poorly and needs a bone marrow transplant so his parents are having IVF at a cost to them personally at £15,000 each attempt to have a brother or sister with a specific gene to her cure their brother..
Is this a step too far? What will the effects on the couples new son/daughter be when they are older? Couldnt possibly imagine the pain the newborn child would go through in order to save the life of their brother..
Few weeks ago on here people were saying piercing a babies ears was child abuse,, yet this seams acceptable?
Opinions of all sides are welcome.. im not even sure what my own opinion on this matter is myself |

I think it highlights that there should be changes to organ and marrow donation system thats currently in use. Everyone should be seen as willing to donate organs after accidental death where they can be used unless they specifically write and inform their GP that they do not wish to participate rather than the other way round ie asking permission.
I also think there should be more appeals for bone marrow tissue typing too so live donors are encouraged to give. Everyone having routine blood tests could be added to a register for cross matching at the click of a computer mouse. Or at birth when the guthrie heel prick is carried out. We have some marvellous medical investigative tools at our fingers and too much bureacracy setting it up. If this avenue was explored first it would save the angst and the money of these obviously distraught parents.
Personally I would not create another life to save their sibling. That could have repercussions in the future. |

At the time when the film was released i wasn't a parent. Since having my daughter i would do a lot to save her, however i don't believe in creating another life to save her. If she had a brother or sister who was a match and was able to have a say in if they wanted to help her id be much happier.
I keep debating with myself over it |

You may save one child, but how would that affect the other child: basically born to be a spare part for their sibling. I can't begin to think what ramifications that would bring in the future.
Sadly, one of those cases damned if you do...damned if you don't! |

I've only read the book. I've recorded the film on sky to watch whilst i'm recouperating next week. I usually find books better than films.
I thought the book was brilliant. All of Jodie Picoult's have been so far. Very sad book tho.

what i found most interesting about my sisters keeper was that the child that had enough of the donations was kate the sister who was receiving the treatments and the donor sister anna wished to continue donating to save her sister, she wasnt thinking that she was spare parts for her sister just that she wanted to do everything possible to save her. she didnt have a problem being a donor for her sister in fact she was just glad she could do something to help and i think that would be how most people would feel. though i do think that a donor should be old enough to understand what is happening |

such a sad film, i cried most of the way through it, Jodie Picoult is a very good author.
As for what i would do in those circumstances i honestly couldnt say, no parent likes the thought of standing by helplessly while their child is suffering, and i feel for anyone that has to make that choice. It would take a lot of soul searching to come up with the answer of what to do. |
