I'm normally fairly confident about my body, well as much as anyone is. I know it's flaws and it's good bits and generally felt fine about it.
Recently I've gone through a really weird feeling that my body is wrong, and I'm just incredibly unhappy about it, which makes no sense when I look at my photos objectively.
This isn't a look at me thread or a request for compliments (please don't, it doesn't help!).
What I want to know is if anyone else has been through similar feelings and how you got your head around it? Or do you still feel that way? |

You said you were pleased with your defined waist the other week, it's the first time you've ever had one.
Perhaps it's because you're just not used to the changes yet, and need time to adapt. |

I am glad its not a look at me thread because I think anyone looking for external validation can't get satisfaction. What you describe does sound like it comes from within. I think one point is that as a woman you have to realise your body goes through changes ... not only related to your monthly cycle. I am sure for men too, depending on what you eat (I am bloated today after overindulging on fruit and therefore feeling particularly frumpy). I think you mean more than that, though. Mid post I can't look back and see you age ... maybe something to do with that? Has this attitude really been a change or has your body changed? There will be something behind it, something personal to you, and some time to think about it will help. Maybe something someone says on the forums will trigger the 'ahh moment' as I believe we get the answer we are looking for if we put the question out there and are open to what comes back.
I need food because I am talking weird now |

I go through similar feelings. But they're just that, feelings. Looking at older photos and comparing what I look like now compared to where I have been doesn't make me feel happy about what I look like currently but does put it into perspective; I haven't got to where I want to get to yet but I can see the improvement over time. My subjective feelings may still be an issue but logical objectivity helps mellow them slightly as a result. |

When i lost weight it was the biggest problem i had. Not because i didnt like it, quite the opposite but i didnt recognise myself. I still dont if im walking down the street and see myself in a window i still dont know its me. On photos with others in im looking for "me" its been 7 months since i got to the weight where im not going to change much now. But any change is a big adjustment. I even completly forget i look how i do |

I feel like shit today because my period just started, I gain 4-7 pounds every month just before my period and suffer low mood which is as severe as depression (which I have had more than once in my lifetime), so yeah, today I feel pretty negative about my body, but in two weeks time it will be different.

I went through a long period (years in fact) of feeling that I didn't look right, and not liking what I saw in the mirror. I think I was always comparing myself to what was seen commercially as attractive in the media. Also not wearing certain clothes because I thought I wasn't good looking enough to wear something that might make me stand out. But eventually I gave myself a bit of a talking to, and slowly made myself come out of my shell and be more positive about me. Not so critical of myself and certainly not afraid to wear what I like now.
Hmmmm... that was a bit of a longer reply than I intended!... |

I wish I could do this. I have the talk to myself on a regular basis but it doesn't make any difference. I can't even look at myself in the mirror! |

I think that if you have ever felt this way about yourself, it can take a long time (as I said, years in my case) to change your view and to love yourself (nothing naughty you lot!) Not in a narcissistic way, but get that feeling of self worth and a bit of self confidence to not give a damn what others may say if you go against what may be considered the norm. |

I guess good questions to ask yourself would be ''what is it exactly you are unhappy with? What would you like to see different and what would you be prepared to do to effect those changes?''
A lot can be achieved through diet and exercise although nothing is instant and can be hard work.
Going down the surgical route can be expensive, not always guaranteed to achieve exactly the desired results and those results can take months to really be seen.Scars and swellings can take a long time to go away.
Having said all that though, the psy chological and emotional benefits of changing parts of yourself that are making you so unhappy cannot be underestimated.
In the end,it's your body and your choice what you do.

I think we all go through this, I know I do. Extremely guilty of comparing myself to others and internally wailing "whhhhyyyyyyyyy can't I look like her?" Regularly wonder what the holy heck certain people see in me as I am so not up to their league (that normally gets me a spell on the don't be so bloody daft step), but it's how I feel.
A complete stranger on this site massively knocked my confidence a month or so ago with a particularly mean message.
Then some days I think "not bad for 41 and I may have wobbly, squishy bits - but they're MY wobbly, squishy bits".
I used to weigh twice what I do now and completely lost my identity as the 'funny fat one'. It's a funny old thing. |

The workout I was doing made me ill (again!) and I had to quit. I think you're onto something though. I've felt like this since I stopped working out. So I don't get that feel good buzz from anything any more (I've quit all junk food too) and perhaps I'm projecting feeling down onto my body?
I'm just obsessing about all sorts of stuff. Stretch marks. Boobs far too small - I look at my body and don't think I look like a woman at all, from a lot of angles I just don't look even like I have boobs. Aging skin. Fat/bloated stomach. (Sideways on my stomach is bigger than my boobs and always has been.)
But this stuff has always been there (mostly) and I really didn't care before.
I need to figure out a new exercise routine I think, if I can do one it would make me feel better. |

I felt like this recently and I'm still going through it. I used to be fairly confident and now just feel awkward. I think there's usually a reason behind these feelings though. For me it was how my body changed after having kids. I think it's just taking a little time to get used to the new body that's facing me in the mirror. Also I think it's a lot easier to focus on the things about our bodies that we dislike. Someone suggested recently that I look at myself in the mirror and pick out things about myself that I like and not focus on the 'bad' bits. I've tried that a few times but I just feel ridiculous. I hope this passes for you though, it sucks. x |

To clarify, women, themselves and others, are usually their own harshest critics. Men, especially in the swinging world, are just looking to get laid primarily. In view of this the parameters of what is aesthetically acceptable is very wide indeed. |

Thanks everyone who's posted. I've just said to someone on here that I was amazed how many people seem to feel the same, and it's some of the most gorgeous people from Fab too.
Reassuring, but also so sad that we can't see ourselves for how great we all are. |

Over the last 2 years I have become more comfy with my body. Don't get me wrong I wish I could put more meat on arms and less on belly
Though Sunday I was at Kestrals and had to be fully naked except for towel - no boxers. I have not been like this for a while so I was out of comfort zone
I realised I am who I am and got on with it |

I went from under 8 stone to over 17 stone in less than a year. It felt like one day I woke up and I was fat,and I'd never been fat before. In fact, for most of my life I was under weight. I was walking past shop windows and not realising it was my reflection I was seeing. I feel physically uncomfortable but mentally my body isn't my problem. |

Probably not. But the point I was making is that men are not harsh critics in the looks department. They just want to get laid, pure and simple.
I have been on both sides of the fence with this one and verbal camaraderie, in clubs, among guys is both amusing and telling. |

I'm happy enough with my body. There's bits of me I'd like different, flatter stomach and less thinning hair, but these things are mother nature and there's bugger all I can do about it. If it's something I can't change no point worrying about it.
I do press ups and pulls ups etc, to keep some tone to my upper half, I can't be arsed with doing gym stuff so I got what I got. If ladies like it great, if not, well I'll not lose sleep over it. |

I hate the way I look always have and probably always will. I used to be a size 6 and after having a baby am now between 8 and a 10, hubby loves the way I look and all the new curves ( he said it was like fucking a skeleton before) but I've never been happy with how I look. I made my self a promise when we started this lifestyle to try and learn to love myself and feel more confident and sexy.
So now every day when I'm naked i look at myself in a mirror for a full 5 minutes and try to focus on the positives about my body and ignore the negatives, because at the end of the day someone loves the way I look and I need to see what he see's |

I've always suffered with bad body image
No matter what I have looked like I've never liked the way I look
I've been a variety of sizes throughout my life and even when I've been slim I've still never really liked myself
It's not just my body its my face too, I don't like that either
I've tried to accept the way I look but I just can't, even when I tell myself I am what I am just be happy with yourself I don't really feel that I'm just forcing myself to think it
Sometimes I don't even understand and annoy myself |

I can only think of one similar situation. Going through a tough time in my personal life, I was staying above water by obsessively working out. It was the only thing in my life I had control over so I was pushing it hard.
I looked great (by my standard at least), but I had conflicting feelings about my appearance. I only looked so well because other things weren't going well, and it was hard to shake that off. |

"You said you were pleased with your defined waist the other week, it's the first time you've ever had one.
Perhaps it's because you're just not used to the changes yet, and need time to adapt.
I need to figure out a new exercise routine I think, if I can do one it would make me feel better."
I'm similar in that I have very little control of my body now I'm poorly. I can't work out anymore and I break out in spots on my body from acne sometimes. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm not seeing myself in true light and my appearance hasn't deteriorated as much as I think.
Perhaps do stuff that makes you feel attractive, like changing your hair style, new clothes/underwear, beauty treatments. If you keep telling yourself that stuff is wrong with your appearance, then you'll start believing it. |

"I think we all go through this, I know I do.
And they are wonderful squishy bits. And some not so squishy. |

"...
What I want to know is if anyone else has been through similar feelings and how you got your head around it? Or do you still feel that way?"
Yes, often. It's just one of those things. Some days I can feel great and others not so much. No rhyme nor reason to it. I don't worry about it because I know it will pass. |

"I'm normally fairly confident about my body, well as much as anyone is.
My body's all wrong. I hate it.
Can I have one like yours please? "
That is possible. Not as easy as some may think but certainly possible. |
