It would have to be seriously antiquated thinking. Even the ancient Greeks understood that the earth was spherical. (Ok not quite a sphere for the pedants but you get the idea). Here is something nicked from Wikipedia:

I've been bumping into people for years who firmly belive in all sorts of shit.... Only last month on here several people denied human driven climate change, fuck me even Donald trump and Boris Johnson does... Or at least they say they do, you can know what those devious fuckers actually belive.
If you tell them there wrong, they say why are you mocking my beliefs, I say I'm not mocking your beliefs, I'm mocking your grasp of science.... You can belive any shit you like |

No that's slightly different the moon pulls the water into an oblong shape (a slightly flattend sphere) then the spherical earth spins through that shape... Imagine turning the earth 360 degrees through the oblong and you'd get a deep bit, shallow bit, deep bit, shallow bit... Tides.
The high tides low tides come from the earth, moon, sun, Mars combinations all being lined up pulling the water into a greater oblong
