The last nightclub in Scunthorpe closes for good on Tuesday. According to the Guardian:
"Across Britain we’re losing a club a month. Discos are now Tescos. Last summer new statistics suggested an epidemic – in 2005 there were 3,144 nightclubs in the UK; in 2015 there were 1,733. The nighttime is changing shape. The reasons why are manifold and odd. Across cities, the demand for space means venues that might have previously welcomed a coach of sweaty dancers are now blocks of many-windowed flats."
There are many reasons for this, including economic downturn, Licensing laws changing in 2003, and changing culture. However its a bit sad that something that was part of our upbringing is slowly going.
I used to go to the Orchard in Nottingham, and have some memories from that. Did you have a favourite nightclub? Do you still go clubbing? Or is it swinger clubs only now? |

I used to go Black Orchard and MGM in Nottingham, ritz in Derby and Krystals, Zoots and branighans in Leicester - all during the early 90's while at Leicester uni.
Many fun times were had, but yes I agree the landscape has changed, people attitudes towards drinking have changed and the smoking ban hasn't helped |

Toffs is now Fibbers and Silks is Kudo. Having two universities helps keep the nightclubs open in York. |

In Londo the police and licensing authorities seem to be in cahoots in introducing draconian conditions forcing clubs to close.
And gentrification doesn't, almost all the clubs in Vauxhall has gone yet they were key to turning the area around. |

Saturday afternoons teen scene in Roofy's, and Monday nights in Casanovas were ace! Everyone must have fallen down that spiral staircase between the two clubs at least once!

I suppose its what you call a night club, In my home city there are more clubs then you could possibly visit in a single night, A lot of them are nationwide chains but there are still independent ones as well, In the late 80s - early 90s you had the supper clubs and people would travel from city to city to visit them but not so much now as you can go to a particular city and spend your night going on a pub/club crawl |

Yeah and shut down immediately, it;s so sad what is happening to Soho. And Brixton for that matter.
Having to have photo ID scanned and gove finger prints to get in places is ridiculously over the top. But when bouncers killed someone at club 65 the police were appealing for witnesses and wouldn;t use that information to trace people as it was rumoured to be too time consuming |

There's one or 2 clubs round here, but as taxi fares rise to time and a half at midnight if you live in any of the neighbouring towns you are looking at £40-50 fare for a 15 minutes journey home so people spend the night at the station waiting for the first train home |

Pubs being cheaper for later hours, whilst people are struggling financially, has helped to seal the fate of many - plus the land sell-offs as others mention.
It's a pity as there have been some fantastic clubs - and it's a whole different experience to pubs, giving variety.
Vauxhall's losing a lot of its great playgrounds, it's a shame. |

In the 90s the club scene was booming across Scotland, the metro, hangar 13, room at the top, fubar, the bunker, archaos, the tunnel, the arches, bonkers and the volcano (the nightclub scene from trainspotting was filmed there). Some brilliant nights in them all but Hamilton palace was my main haunt as it was on my doorstep, unfortunately the palace is still open |

Not to worry, the number of nightclubs will eventually find a natural equilibrium in keeping with the changing ecomonomy.
Meaning, yes there's an excess now but as the number drops to find a balance with what the economy/population can support then those nightclubs that are left will eventually thrive.
It's a trend that mirrors basic animal population fluctuations in evolutionary Biology.
So they won't all disappear.. and the ones are left will thrive.
Easy business..
(pun intended)

Pretty much all of the club's I used to frequent are closed now.
Dantes, the Bali Hi, Kristianos, Martines, Cindi Roc to name but a few.
Sad times....... |

In some of the clubs I used to go in years ago they got closed down due to drugs, fighting and allowing the half pint wonders in. One or two got shutdown due to allowing underage people in there, it was found out the people know the doorman and went it.
The police got fed up and got them shutdown. |

Anyone remember the sailor's place in Southsea? Rosies?
Flip. The carpet was sticky.
I say thank goodness clubs are closing but that is just because I can't dance, feel ripped off by over-priced drinks and prefer to be able to hear conversation. Oh, and to be in bed by 10pm.

No proper night clubs here anymore just a couple of pub that play music. The night life here has died. There used to be four or five clubs and the town was buzzing Friday and Saturday night's. I walked through town a few weeks back about 1145pm on a Saturday, the four plod in their van almost outnumbered the public. |

I've worked in clubs for 13 years as a performer, DJ and promoter and the last few years of closures have been staggering. I'm still busy but have lost a lot of income, hence why I returned to being a Dominatrix too.
I blame several factors. Recession, smoking ban, licencing, gentrification, greedy councils, terrible music, chem sex parties and hook up aps. Like this one.
Why go out to pull when you can summon someone to your home? |

I used to go to Majestyk, Planet Earth, Nato in Leeds and get on a bus to go to Frontier in Batley and Club Barcelona in Birstall. Theyre all gone now. There's still a few clubs going well in Leeds like Mission and Space I've heard. The Uni events are doing well too. It's the closure of small live music venues that I've found sad. The likes of the Cockpit, Josephs Well and Carpe Diem have all closed. It's all about bars, real ale pubs and hipster joints now. Boooo!!!! |

Most of the reason I went to them when I was younger was because they were open late. Now with late night licensing there is no point leaving your favourite bar/venue. |

Being from Scunthorpe the club that's closing won't be missed unlike the good ones that have closed and been knocked down. The owner practically ruling the pubs in the area for some years for his own agendas so glad it's closed.
Been going out in Scunthorpe since mid to late 80's and still do. Never been a massively busy town for night life. Some say it gets worse some say it gets better. Since the recession more people drink at home and hit town later on in the evening including ourselves. But it's not nesesarilly where your drinking but the company you are with lol
Best places been and mainly gone in Scunthorpe
J J's
Henry afrika's
Club 2000
Blarney Stone all shut now
Abacus bar depending on night
The Brittannia bar
Class 6
Mary rose to name some of the few left in the town but still a good night can be had even for us oldies |

When I was in high school I'd go out clubbing in Manhattan quite a bit but I stopped when I got serious about school.
Now Marc and I go out dancing sometimes, but usually at pubs, not nightclubs. We tried going to a club in London but the dress codes, advance tickets, and overpriced atmosphere was too much for me so I just said fuck it and went to wetherspoons. |

Mr loved nightclubs, they've never really been my scene. I used to come out stinking of fags in a particular one we used to go to.
I was out recently and decided I'd prefer an all night coffee shop to go into after closing. Just to sit and natter. I'm obviously getting old.

Glasgow had a fantastic club scene during the 80's; Panama Jacks, Tin Pan Alley, Cardinal Follies, Henry Afrikas, Warehouse, Alice's Underground, to name a few. I used to regularly travel from South Wales to Glasgow, just to club! Good times. |
