Slugs in Gardens and animals damaging plants
Jump to: Newest in thread
Hi. I am awaiting my fate. I have gardens in various different locations and while I was away in France slugs appear to have eaten the shoots of a very large Delhia which I have had for about 15 years.
My fault for not putting down slug pellets . I am hoping that the bus is the only damage as I have over 200 planted in total.
All the pansies were eaten and cats have scratched out the bogonias at two of the houses .
Hopefully the damaged Delhia will recover.
This is the price that I paid for a week holiday at my apartment in Cap d Agde |

"Dahlia /begonia..."
You should come round the garden centre with me. The trouble I've caused getting 'labia' and 'lobelia' muddled...
OP: Sadly there are plants we simply no longer grow due to slugs loving them so much

Get set for a Gastropod invasion this summer, record breaking wet weather has seen them increase threefold, according to a bbc news report.
Apart from eating all your plants, bring generally gross, they carry lungworm so can be dangerous for poochie's too. |

An old yoghurt pot or similar, dig a little hole for it, put it so it's flush to the ground. Cheap smart price beer inside. Slugs drawn to it like moths to a flame, they go in it, have a party, and die happy. |

I don't think I could handle that! Maybe I'll just sacrifice my sweet peas to the slug gods. |

Nemetode's are a natural predator of slugs and snails and are in the soil, there are companies that sell them to boost the levels up..
slug pellets are not that good if a pet or child eats them..
OP maybe if you had a knitting needle or 2 you could defend your plants..

He'd need a set in each garden...
Couldn't go carrying them between gardens on a plane now. That'd be dangerous! |

I use copper slug tape around my raised beds (& doorways as they sometimes get in-but this is another story).
I also use a ring of rock salt around delicious plants they love like lilies when established as it deters.
In early spring to protect shots, I use broken egg shells over coffee grindings. Coffee shops will sometimes just give you their grindings if you ask.

I found a nest of caterpillars in my garden yesterday, gross, I have a phobia and have cut down trees except one. It will have to go. They were doing the caterpillar Olympics in my garden yesterday, up and down the deck, round and round the plant pots. I retreated to the safety of indoors after one crawled up my leg!xxx |

Several years ago we had a plague of slugs and snails, you couldn't walk along without treading on them at every step and the garden down the road had his entire crop of cabbages stripped in a night. |
