The loneliness of the empty office

I've recently started a new office job, for the first time I'm doing office based mon - fri, 9-5. For the majority of this week my co worker who shares the office with me has been asbsent through illness and I've been so bored!

My question dear fabbers is what can I do to amuse myself in a quiet office on my own?

"Do the work you are paid for?"

Third post, who had third post?!

Yes, my daily tasks take about 5 hours to complete, I'm here for 8...

I'm a civil servant. I could make my work last 8 hours but I figure, with the tiny amount I get paid, why bother?

Then tell your manager that either;

You need some more work to do;

Or

That your job only needs a part timer.....

*sigh* I'm agency... I'm all for being busy and doing what I'm paid for, but minimum wage and left to my own devices all day doesn't make me exactly the most enthusiastic of workers

I used to clean the office once I'd cleaned up all the files,sent out all the mail,did all my calls and was waiting for the boss to get back from meetings or house viewings. I was 16 and on minimum wage for a teenager. I sorted out the back room,all the desk drawers and the ceiling cobwebs.

Learn!!

Do some sort of online course.

I've done IOSH, asbestos awareness, project management and legionella control courses amongst others in my spare time at work.

No once can bollock you for it and it enhances your CV

I wouldn't recommend the legionella one to anyone. It's boring.

Sadly all of these helpful hints have come to naught, my boss left early and I've got 1 1/2 hours to wait until I knock off *sigh*
