Are you also watching his series on bbc2? It is interesting and he is following a victorian guidebook written by george bradshaw, as he describes how the various destinations have changed since victorian times and did you know communism was born in a pub in manchester? |

I find his travel shows very informative. Watch his train journeys through Europe and America. The chap has an endearing personality and his enthusiasm addictive to his story telling. |

One was in my dad's village, on the whisky trail, Dufftown. Sadly it is a tourist attraction and only open in the summer rattling between there and a town 10 miles away |

Use to watch this a few years back, glad he was responsible for keeping/advising Thatcher to save Carlise to Settle branchline. Spent six glorious sunny weeks painting the stations, dent, ribblehead, and settle. Even better, was I had drive through to them, always planned my routes, different every wonderful day. |

I watched the series he did in the US which I really enjoyed although the scene of him running up the steps in Philadephia to the Rocky theme was a bit of a stretch. |

Must confess to this programme having completely changed my perception of a man I had previously thought of as an odious Tory from his days in parliament, but think he makes a great (if a little twee) presenter who gets the information across in an affable way. Through watching this and looking a little more at his life, it's also come to light he's rejected his Tory boy past completely and done a complete u-turn in his views (not that that has anything to do with his ability to present the programme!).
Favourite game in our household is "Guess which jacket Michael is going to be wearing today"!!

Unfortunately the reality of rail travel for most of us is crushed up between someone's halitosis/mixamatosis and the highly audible tschh of a "personal" stereo on a stop-start journey to work. Never seem Portillo on what is an average train journey for most of us. |
