I would like to learn a bit of French, but my short term memory is piss poor, so I just don't think I would ever manage to do it  just cant see how people manage to speak another language fluently without having to rattle their brains constantly converting things in their head quickly enough to hold a conversation. |

The converting stops after a while.
It's difficult to learn a language unless it's used often.
I bet if you live/work where they speak no English for 6 months. You'll amaze yourself how much you can pick up.. |

I speak two languages fluently but I grew up talking two languages, its a lot easier for a child to learn two languages at the same time than an adilt to learn a second language later in life |

I lived in Germany but never got far with the language, enough for day today stuff but not much else. Then moved to The Netherlands and tried my best to learn Dutch. Went to school full time for a year but again anything much more than basics lost me. I understood a lot but struggled to respond. That was almost thirty years ago and have lost it all now apart from a few words. |

Repetition is the best way, play things in the car and at home over and over until it's fixed in your head. Try and find a native speaker who is happy to chat and tell you simple phrases and attend a beginner's evening class.
It does take a while but it's worth it  |
