I have added another useful lifestyle lesson to the list.
I have found the list (originally compiled by writer Pete McCarthy) to generally be a great help in ones path through life.
The one rule I have not adhered to is never eat in somewhere that has laminated menus as that is far too impractical. I have however now found an able substitute for this rule.
Hand cut chips!
Any establishment that offers hand cut chips is to be avoided at all cost. Rather than hand cut chips , the menu should read a handful of chips. Often served in a miniature galvanised bucket or tiny frying basket. Cunningly plumped up with grease proof paper to disguise the miserly portion for something much more ample and generous. They often accompany an overpriced burger served in a brioche rather than a proper bun or a badly presented steak on either a roofing slate or a bathroom tile.
In other words you have probably walked into an overly pretentious overpriced gastro style pub establishment with bad service and ambitions above its station in life.
To be avoided! |

As ever, you're on the money with this as a general guide however there is always an exception to the rule.
Best Fish n Chips takeaway EVER* was triple cooked handcut chips with delish beer-battered cod served with a slice of lemon at a little ramshackle place by the harbour at Porlock Weir in Somerset. Each portion freshly cooked to order so you always had to wait 20 minutes or so to be ready.
Bloody gorgeous they were. And reasonably priced. Sadly obviously too ramshackle, out of the way and little known as I made a special detour last Summer whilst driving through Exmoor just to get some but it was sadly closed down .. obviously not pretentious or pricey enough for the hipsters to keep it afloat.
Anyway, sorry for going off at a slight tangent, as you were..

"Why would you go into an overpriced gastro pub if you dont like the food. Its not as though you dont know what your going to get there all the bloody same"
If you don't know the area and are just visiting, you may decide to stop somewhere for a bite to eat. While perusing the menu before you enter you will see the description of aforementioned hand cut chips and know that the establishment is to be avoided like the plague during a reconstruction of the Black Death |

"If we are going to somewhere different its my "job" to research where we are going to eat and find the kind of places we both enjoy"
Do you visit alone and try everything on the menus? What a great excuse for eating out every day ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |
