Hi, my name is Pixie & I am a fatty!
I'm happy with giving myself this title as I am under no illusion that I am fat, obese, a health risk etc
Recently I had quite a serious health issue, not directly related to my weight but upon reading my discharge notes I saw a lot of reference to my BMI & investigations that were thwarted during an op due to it being high.
Having had a month of work to fully recover, I realised I was sinking into depression, having suffered before I knew the signs.
So I got off my fat ass, downloaded an app, got the pup on her lead & off we went.
Over the last 3 days we've covered 11km. I already feel better in myself, the fog is lifting & I'm raring to get back to work on Wednesday.
My point to this rambling is..... How do I get myself to run?
I've never been a runner, I'd love to just get out there & maybe get to the point where I can do a charity run.
All advice welcome, positive though hopefully.
I can't go to a gym due to finances & lack of time so I'm looking for ideas for the great outdoors!

Well done on everything you've done so far!
Personally, I'd stick with the walking. You burn the same amount of calories for distance covered anyway so, running won't provide many more gains. Making little changes to your diet will help loads too. You dont have to eat like a sparrow, just cut down on fatty foods & stuff with a high sugar content, maybe slightly smaller portions too.
You'll be amazed at how much more "pep" you'll have.

To be honest I have to stay reasonably fit for work but I hate running with a passion! It bores me to tears!!!
I prefer doing the HIIT sessions to help me slim down and keep up my cardio.
Have a look at "The body coach" videos on YouTube. Loads of different videos for different levels of fitness.
Me personally I prefer group sessions..... No pun intended
Try team sports or you'll find online, local community fitness groups. They're very inexpensive, if not free and you have that motivation of helping each other.

You dont need too change you're diet,its about burning calories,just do fat burning exercises at you're own pace |

If you're taking it seriously, go to a proper running store and get trainers for your feet as you may be an under/overpronator. It'll help with preventing impact injuries and improve comfort. |

Congrats on your first steps! But I hope you can take the great advice that's already been given..
There's no need to train like Rocky.
You can eat healthy all you want but that won't necessarily make you lose weight.
Download my fitnesspal.com and stick with it! It has a really easy barcode scanner feature which means less inputting of information.
Don't run, a brisk walk will do until you're ready
Weight loss is 80% how many calories go in versus how many go out and 20% exercise - that's a huge ratio swing but it's true. |

Really? You seem clued up though. Why not alternative meds? They have proven benefits for loads of folk and only a fool would trust anything pushed by the state. They are dishonest to the core so I bet the alternatives are more effective. |

All advice welcome, positive though hopefully.
I can't go to a gym due to finances & lack of time so I'm looking for ideas for the great outdoors!

Depending how big you are running could cause more issues than it fixes.
Any chance you can do any swimming or rowing machine or anything low impact.
If youre heavy enlugh that its affecting surgery choices you're knees are going to be getting hammered running |

Because everything that worked was collected together and became "medicine". The rest is snake oil.
Proven beyond placebo is pretty much unheard of for "alternative" medicine |

Hi,
I started going to a gym in Jan, twice a week for an hour. For the first few weeks, it was HELL!!
Then when it got easier, I started doing aqua zumba once a week as well. Which I love!
Then a couple of months after that, my body sort of let me know it was ready to try running. It felt stronger and moving around felt different somehow.
So, I now run (Well flail about in trainers and leggings on a woodland path twice a week) I warm up well, Then run for 90secs, walk for the same and repeat, for about a mile and a half.
If someone had said way back in January I would not only be running and exercising and enjoying it.....I would have laughed my self silly and thought they were out of their minds for even suggesting it!
Good luck, keep going. Even when you really can't be arsed, cos thats when you need it the most.

I'd keep walking first. When you start running - intervals is a good way to start. Walk so far, run so far and keep doing that. Is there a ladies running club where you are? They often try to get people up to 5km in 10 weeks. Take it slow as you don't want to injure yourself. |

Good trainer's are a must.
Sadly they are not cheap, but even if you are walking decent proper fitting supportive footwear is a first priority.
Avoid fashion trainers like the plague.
And avoid flat shoes, like converse even more.
Definitely avoid running just yet, but walk at a pace that makes you sweat and slightly breathless.
Build up distance gradually.
After a month or so of regular walks.
Try introducing (say 2/3times a week) within your regime (assuming that you a walking daily?
Some short runs.
Example.
Say that you have been walking ten minutes, say right I am going to jog from this lamp-post to three lamp-posts from there, then continue with the rest of the walk. Then gradually over time as fitness improves and weight comes off, weekly or fortnightly add an extra lamppost.
I would aim for a minimum walk time of 30 minutes daily if possible.
And the runs once fitness Base has been built.
2/3times.
I cannot enough stress the importance of proper footwear, also being a larger lady, sports bra and comfortable clothing.
That said regardless of the clothing and footwear, congratulations on getting out and taking responsibility.
And remember those days where you really can't be arsed and would rather choose the sofa are the most important days to go.
It builds mental strength and discipline.

I tried running and hated it and I don't think my damaged knee loves me for it however I walk loads each day and that has seemed to put me in good stead to lose a bit of weight recently. Well done OP but take it one step at a time and you will get there |

My friend loves that app, even cosplayed as Runner 5 earlier this year.
I'm just starting to run on the treadmill, can only manage 1 min 15 so far but I'll build up. Just keep doing what you're doing, when you feel ready to start running you'll know |

Couch to 5k app? It tells ypu when to walk wh3n to run and builds you up. They have ones where ypu set the timeframe for getting up to 5k so you can do it slower xx |

Running can be tough on our joints, possibly more so when carrying a lot of weight.
I'd keep on with the walking and other bits of exercise. You could always run in somewhere like a park, say for one minute. A softer surface will be less impactful than hard surfaces. But I'd generally stick with being active in different ways.
As with many pursuits, it's easy to overdo it when starting, so gradually increase how much of and the types of activity. |

Some good advice on here, some not so good.
Def do watch your diet, those saying you don't need to bother about what you eat are at the other end of the metabolism scale so their experience will not be the same as yours. Diet is very, very important.
However, it is not about eating less, it's about eating better. As mentioned above, Myfitnesspal app is excellent.
As for exercise, your doing great, your off the sofa and that's half the battle.
Keep up the walks, gradually increase the pace and the distance and before you get into running maybe look into speed walking.
It's easier to get into, you can have gentle hurts of it mixed in with your regular paced walk and it's low impact.
Keep up the good work and remember, your already running rings round everyone sitting on the sofa. |

I know bugger all about running really, I started cycling for exercise instead.....
But wanted to just say good on you - starting is the hardest part.
I know a lot of people who have lost a lot of weight on various health eating plans (as opposed to diets), the most is my best mate who lost EIGHTEEN STONES! However, it was when exercise kicked in that they started to feel good about themselves - it's quite addictive x |

Have you heared of the app "couch to 5k"
That will help at a slow pace to get you doing little runs,if you manage to get past week 3 then good on you, but if you dont then dont feel down on yourself, just repeat week 1 & 2 again till you can manage week 3.

I'm always very proud of unhealthy people trying to get fit.
The ones you see pounding the pavement or in the gym huffing and puffing etc.
It's always more of a struggle at first when Trying to get healthy, especially when you're carrying alot of extra weight too.
I don't understand why some people snigger when they see them ?
I think.... Good on you and we'll done for doing something about improving your health and fitness !

I can advocate the Adidas MiCoach app.
It may seem a bit intimidating at first, but they structure exercise regimes for a variety of sports, and from a complete beginner to top club athlete.
It will lead you from very small steps to a 5 km in a tailored program, and advise on other strength, exercise and health ideas.

And hello op.....well.done on taking the first steps and for doing something to help beat your feelings of depression x such a major hurdle over come in just doing that!
I was never a runner. My dad was, he has run several marathons, triathlons, tough guys etc and he tried to get me motivated as a kid when my weight started creeping up buy I never 'got it'.
A few years ago I was made redundant and was sat around the house for a couple of weeks bored so started the couch to 5k programme. I used the nhs choices podcasts bit there all sorts of apps you can get with the same basic premise. A 9 week course that builds you up slowly to running for half am hour (I can't run 5k in half an hour though my fastest time is 39:11!).
In week one you will do a 5 min warm up walk the 8 sets of running for 60 secs and walking for 90 secs then another 5 min cool down walk at the end.

I would also advocate parkrun. I have done 91 of the buggers and I love them! You can walk or run and it gets you mixing with other people as well.

Swimming is also great it's low impact but effective my nan swore by it and was doing 100 plus lengths in her 70's. I do it and notice my fitness increasing...my next battle to overcome is to stop eating crisps and drinking vodka |

Your Nan was fit. I'm just getting back into swimming and I agree, it's a good all over exercise. Plus it's not weight bearing so easier on the joints.
OP. Sounds like you're doing all the right things. Like others said good trainers help if you really get into it. Some shops look at your running style on a treadmill. I over pronate my feet so got trainers that keep me aligned better and it's much more comfortable to walk/jog in them.

Thanks so much for all the support & positive comments!
It really pushes me to carry on.
There's a few things I need to get sorted ie decent trainers, widening the activity etc
I live in a small village so there's not a lot available unfortunately which is why I went with the walking.
I also work full time doing nights & am a single mum to a nursery age child so I rarely get to surf the couch lol!!
Later today I will list all the suggestions & start going through them x

Sit up will do nothing to target tummy fat.
Despite all the crap you se on TV it is not possible to choose where you will lose the fat from and in guys, the tummy is usually the last place it goes so all you can do is drop body fat calorie control and cardio until you get to that last bit. |

get a dog if your lifestyle allows
seriously having a dog means you have to go out everyday
i started jogging with my dogs, for some reason you dont feel such a twat jogging with a dog, it can be hard jogging the streets when your over weight because people do take the piss and it hurts, i take my dogs into the woods where you only tend to see other joggers and dog walkers who dont seems to have the piss taking mentality
I do get some comments though as i have a greyhound which people find really funny me jogging with a greyhound but they tend to be friendly joking comments not nasty ones |

Just up the pace of ur walk every now & then, ease into it, hen when u fell comfortable with the pace up it again until u start a jog, then onto a full Run...
as said before don't run before you can walk, that can cause injuries! Get good running shoes also! |

Thanks " i used to wiegh 18 stone and i hated my body but i wanted to change this what i did i started goin to the gym and exercise 4-5 days a week now i wiegh 15 stone and i feel a lot better in my self its all about eating the right foods and have the right amount of sleep try to cut out things like crips cakes takeaways things like that you need high protien low carbs but dont have to much protien cos it turns to fat your body can only handle 1 gram of protien per pound of body wieght so just watch everything you eat if you ever need any help jus drop me a message good luck and you will be fine it will drop off yeah x |

"Hi, my name is Pixie & I am a fatty!
I'm happy with giving myself this title as I am under no illusion that I am fat, obese, a health risk etc
Recently I had quite a serious health issue, not directly related to my weight but upon reading my discharge notes I saw a lot of reference to my BMI & investigations that were thwarted during an op due to it being high.
Having had a month of work to fully recover, I realised I was sinking into depression, having suffered before I knew the signs.
So I got off my fat ass, downloaded an app, got the pup on her lead & off we went.
Over the last 3 days we've covered 11km. I already feel better in myself, the fog is lifting & I'm raring to get back to work on Wednesday.
My point to this rambling is..... How do I get myself to run?
I've never been a runner, I'd love to just get out there & maybe get to the point where I can do a charity run.
All advice welcome, positive though hopefully.
I can't go to a gym due to finances & lack of time so I'm looking for ideas for the great outdoors!

Congratulations. I'm a personal trainer and I encourage you to walk before you run. Eat sensibly, exercise smart and rest good enough. |

Thanks so much for all the support & positive comments!
It really pushes me to carry on.
There's a few things I need to get sorted ie decent trainers, widening the activity etc
I live in a small village so there's not a lot available unfortunately which is why I went with the walking.
I also work full time doing nights & am a single mum to a nursery age child so I rarely get to surf the couch lol!!
Later today I will list all the suggestions & start going through them x

One thing for sure, don't go to Sports Direct for trainers
The staff haven't a bloody clue
Try and go to a "proper" running shop and most will be able to give you good advice |

So a little update for any who are interested!
Whilst walking the pooch today, she got a little sprint on & before I knew it I was running..... Me, running!!
It just felt so natural, only did about 5 minutes til she stopped sharply to sniff out a new friend!
Thanks to all who said it will just happen & thanks to Evie for the extra support & info xx |

The first step is always the hardest but feeling better in yourself will be the reward.
As for doing a charity run join up to one..do it giving you a goal to set yourself As for running most of them state you can walk run or jog
I've never been one to run and plan on walking ..maybe fast paced on my first pretty muddy 5k run |
