Why oh why do car drivers move and block the passage of a motorbike filtering through traffic? Is it jealousy of the fact we can come through?
We have to put up with the danger and the weather...Please let us have the ability to get there faster, it's all we have!! |

It annoys me, had a massive bruise once as a car driver decided to do just that as we were moving through..
I dont think most realise that your allowed to legally do so..
I always move over.... and get a nod from the bikers, easier if they have decent cans on though as you hear them coming..
Oh but why do scooter drivers have to scare me..as a biker myself I always look for bikes.. but went to move over for a group the other day and a scooter rider went up the inside of me.. shocking..

Two types of riders that scare me as an all year round biker....scooters and couriers.
I agree, i think car drivers think we are doing something illegal. Need to be educated on that one me thinks! |

If your filtering sensibly they shouldn't do it, some do it because they have no concept of the injuries they will cause us and they think it's clever, a car wing mirror comes off really easily you know and it's expensive to fix if you want to piss them back off.
I was on the M6 a while ago and some twat in his convertable looked over his shoulder at me and then moved right across me, I stopped and put the bike on the stand and walked towards him the look on his face was a picture, I told him that if he had not had the Lady with him I would be giving him a good hiding, he didn't look so brave then and the Lady apologised for him, I said to her enjoy your day and walked away |

The think bike campaign should of included educating drivers that bikes can filter.. not just to look out for them..
as summer comes I think that I will have a few choice words for other drivers.. I often now go to bike events and stick mates gear in my car as no longer have a bike.. and on way to big bike events you would think that the drivers would be better.. but no..
Saw people moving over to stop bikes trying to get into silverstone for the WSB.

i think it's the mentality of our country in general.. we do not have the balls to confront people personally but are happy to do so in a safe environment...ie from the comfort of a car or the anomninity of the internet..as the advert says 'get some nuts' |

at the end of the day it's how we are educated, in Denmark where I live half the time, the pedestrian is the primary road user, cyclist second, buses third and other forms fourth, it's quite scary if you are from england to just step out into the road and expect cars to stop, but they just do. the trick is to remember which country I am in, lol

To be fair out where I live most people are bike friendly, but thats mostly because we are not that far from Matlock.. lol and loads of bike routes..
Although the traffic wardens have killed that off a bit as a nice sunday event.

there are also inconsiderate traits from some bikers...motor and cycle....but i guess that's another thread?! |

on that note..do did you know that pro rata, more pedestians are killed than motorcyle pillion passengers. by dozy car drivers mounting the pavement. so statistically it's safer to be on the back of a bike than walking down the road |

the majority around here are cyclists and these are narrow country lanes...however, when they come to a layby or wider stretch of road, do they move to the left side of the road to allow the built up traffic to ease? no...they continue in the centre of the road regardless...without exception i might add...never have i know a cyclists move aside or help.
motorcyclists normally drive out here en mass so yes, they do dominate the roads when they drive through....their actions are often what i consider dangerous and when i have precious cargo..i get pissed off by that...they swerve in and out of traffic at great speeds, sometimes illegally in no-overtaking zones....
there was a group once going at snails pace and spread over the road and quite enjoynig the fact there was a string of traffic behind unable to takeover...eventually some of us got past...we got to the next set of traffic lights and the buggars weaved through th traffic, sat at the head of the lights and continued on their very deliberate go slow...so yes, they are a culpable of being inconsiderate on the roads as car drivers |

I am always careful of motorcyles and pedal cyclists however.
I've lost count of the number of time motor cycle riders have undercut and cut in front of me. Causing me to swerve. The amount of times an idiot on a bike has been how do you say filtering and cant balance the bike properly and hit my car. The number of times a bike has driven past at speed while I was waiting in traffic and made me jump out of my skin.
It was a Motorcycle speeding that KILLED my grandfather on his 80th birthday while he was crossing on a zebra crossing.
So forgive me if I have no bloody sympathy whatsover. |

i got a speeding ticket for doing 36 in a 30 zone. in my car. i admit to that. because it was only just over the limit i was offered a speed awarness course. in the course there were several interesting points made but the best one was the instructor said that if all car drivers were to possess a bike licence then accidents would be reduced dramatically...this was the instructor not me.
he said that bikers have a much better awarness of what's going on |

Just a note for car drivers and bikers alike - if you are doing 40mph on a 40mph road, and you pull over to let a motorcyclist past, you can be charged with assisting a criminal offence (formerly known as aid and abetting).
It happened to a friend of mine when the local rozzers were having a fund-raiser - sorry, I mean crack-down. |

Nah. A solicitor would argue, successfully, that the motorist was simply taking action to avoid a motorcycle crashing into the back of his car. |

As a cyclist,I've been knocked off by pedestrians stepping off the sidewalk without looking and motorists cutting me off when turning. Even had one ride into me from behind.
Having gone to all the rounds of the British Superbike Champs last year (photographer - tough job but someone has to do it)I was astounded by the reckless bikers at the end of the day. Definitely a minority, but a major tragedy waiting to happen.
Having cycled for the last 25 years, it has made me a better motorist. |

It does take a while to get used to, but seems some degree of respect is still afforded towards other people.
Another thing they don't just clear the road, they clear the cycle paths and pavements too when it snows. |

At end of the day most reasonable road users have irreplaceable bodies they want to keep or expensive hardware that they don't want a mess made of.
Alas no matter what mode of transport from trike to segway to 40 tonne lorry you will find enough people who have no concept of what can go wrong and the consequences of their actions.
A car is the most forgiving of little mistakes, whereas a bike or motorbike its not just a new tyre or panel, but perhaps a few weeks in a plaster cast, so you learn quickly. Or you are dead.
If speed cameras caught dangerous driving I would be happy for them to be there, e.g. that person 3 feet behind you in a 40mph average zone, a missed gear change and crunch. |

In the interests of fairness....
Cycling to work yesterday ( i commute by bike, ride mtb's and road ride) i came up behind a chap on a cycle acting rather oddly. He was riding really slowly, holding up traffic and wobbling about across the white line.
When i came alongside him i realised he was cycling one-handed, looking down at his phone whilst he was texting!
I couldn't believe how stupid he was being, only the fact that it was 07:30hrs and the road was very quiet that prevented him from being a RTA statistic.
Having said that, yes, i see many more drivers using handheld devices than other road users but the above just goes to show that idiots are everywhere. |

Not having seen the incident i question i can't comment on it.
However, many road cyclists will often ride 2-up in a tight formation (as they are legally allowed to do so) in order to make their enviroment safer.
The reasoning is thus, 6 bikes riding 2-up close together are approximately the same shape/width as a small car whereas a long string of single cyclists are a LOT harder to pass safely than a slow moving car-shaped mass.
Think about this, on a single lane road a motorist attempts to overtake a single string of cycles strung out over 75/100yards and moving at 20mph. The motorist attempts the manoevre, sees a car coming the other way and realises they don't have the time and space to complete the action, they then pull back into the lane right on top of several cyclists and driving into them.
That's why cyclists ride 2-up. It's not to do with deliberately attempting to slow up traffic (they are traffic) but rather to impose a safer road enviroment around them.
Also, riding in single file can encourage motorists to make riskier overtaking manoevres when there really isnt the space (heading into traffic-calming islands for example) and causing an accident.

As a cyclist i agree completely.
Idiotic, dangerous and completely reprehensible. |

"I am always careful of motorcyles and pedal cyclists however.
Sympathies for your loss but not all bikers are the same, I've lost many close friends through car drivers but dont tar them all with the same brush "
Interesting one this.
Cyclists very often get tarred with the same brush - all being red-light jumping, road-hogging menaces who shouldn't be on the road etc.
Motorcyclists - all speed-crazed lunatics on powerful suicide machines with no regards for the law etc.
Car drivers don't get the same mass opprobrium though do they? In my my this is because most people don't cycle, most people don't ride bikes so they have no understanding and/or empathy for those types of transport, they are all just 'they'.
However, most adults are car drivers so when we see some stupid, dangerous, thoughtless and ignorant action we don't think "all car drivers are wankers" because WE are car drivers and WE KNOW that WE are not wankers - don't we?
Only when the mass of motorists stop thinking of 'them' and start to realise that an idiot is an idiot regardless of their mode of transport then will the situation improve.
We all also need to understand that our journey is in no way any more important than anybody elses - and certainly not more important than another persons safety and health. |

Most bikers round here get that far up my arse its scary. I'll generally try pull as far over as possible to let them pass rather than worry about having to brake and a biker sitting in the back seat.
Occasionally ill get the wave to say thanks which makes it worthwhile. |

...and it was two tourists in a car that hit and KILLED my partner while he was riding his motorbike on a local road less than a mile from home.
PEOPLE kill, not the machines...no matter two or four wheels, powered or pedalled.

You get idiots driving cars
You get idiots riding motorbikes
You get idiots riding bicycles
An idiot is an idiot, you get them on all modes of transport, it's ok having biased views depending on your personal choice of transport....but anyone who can't accept that it isn't the mode of transport but the driver/rider is deluded. |

Thank you for your sympathies but I'm afraid as far as I'm concerned all Motorcylist are a danger to themselves and others. My opinion to which I am entitled and unless someone can bring my grandfather back my opinion will stay the same. And tar them with the same brush I shall."
We'll that makes you a biggot, you can not tar a particular group of people the same brush. I feel sorry for people like you, because you make the world an ugly place. you do have my sympathies, but not my respect. |
