I'm not the sentimental type (or at least I thought I wasn't), so imagine my surprise at shedding a tear at a Dolly Parton concert.
The song 'Smoky Mountain Memories' was a new one on me at the time but she explained it was about her Dad trying to make a better life for his family by travelling north to work in the Ford factory.
From a poor farming background with little or no education, his manual skills was all he had going for him and it was known by moving north the guys could earn good money to take the family out of poverty.
It didn't work out though because he missed home, his missed his wife, he missed his kids ... so came home and felt like he'd let them down.
OK, it struck a chord and I'd had a couple of shandys, so I was at a concert, blubbing |

So jealous. I would die a happy man if I could just give her a hug. |

Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis
When my son was only 3 or 4, he went through a very difficult time and was attacking me constantly (hitting, kicking, biting, throwing things at me) throughout the day (often every 20 minutes or so) every day for several months.
That lyric "You cut me open and I keep bleeding love" just about seemed to sum it all up. I cried a lot listening to that.

My mum once told me that a mothers love only works one way and that's down and can't be reciprocated in the same way.
I never understood that until I had my own children.
They can rip you apart and the best mum will love them even more as they try to piece themselves back together.

Skin (Sara Beth) by Rascal Flatts
This song gets me every time, and I'm not ashamed to admit it!
Lost one of my best friends to breast cancer a couple of years ago and this song reminds me of her, and the strength and determination that she showed on a daily basis to ensure that her diagnosis didn't define her. |

Your Song-Elton John
It was playing on the radio when my daughter was born, and spookily came on the radio as I dropped her off for her first day at college after she moved up to Manchester from Bristol.

Ridiculous as it seems, I'm unusually moved by The King of Rock n' Roll by Prefab Sprout. Something about a particularly sad song being performed in an upbeat way. |
