There was a 'retro' buffet last Christmas at work. Cheese and pineapple etc on cocktail sticks. The younger staff were 'oh, isn't this retro'. For me, it was reminiscent, I was there the first time around ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

a big poached salmon with cucumber 'scales'....and a cheese and pineapple hedgehog!..and a brightly coloured,yet unidentifiable mousse in a novelty mould! |

Cheese...gotta have loads of different cheeses.
And those little onion bhajis.
And mini pork pies.
Don't forget strips of celery to go with chilli dip.
A selection of meats.
Pickles...got to have pickles.
Salmon.
A nice, crisp salad.
And wine...PLENTY OF WINE.
Now, what have I missed? |

The 70s and 80s were the heyday for the buffet, I'm disappointed when there's a wedding and they pay out for a sit down meal, I want to fight aunt June for a slice of pork pie, not hear uncle jack ask "is this cup-a-soup" as often as it takes to get a laugh

Plates (paper will do, china to be posh), napkins/serviettes (paper ok, linen to be posh), serving utensils for hygiene, soft drinks in addition to alcohol, clean glasses plus a separate area for used played and glasses etc.
As for food, it's not a buffet without cocktail sausages and triangular mini sandwiches of at least two varieties which can't be identified, one with brown bread, one with white.
A super posh buffet has waiting staff wandering around with lots of different snacky bits and pieces, ever changing, hot and cold, including mini desserts towards the end of the event. I remember going to a Swarovski event in Austria which had this and by heck, it was posh. The guests were all the top people in Austria and other countries, including royalty! I didn't know this when I asked the Swarovski people earlier that day. |

all the best buffets of my youth consisted of
coronation chicken
chicken drumsticks
vol au vents with creamed mushrooms for the filling
savoury rice
a side of salmon with cucumber 'scales'
cocktail sausages on sticks
cheese and pineapple on sticks
samosas
onion bhajis
potato salad
pickled onions
beetroot
carrot batons and hummus dips
and for afters a vast bowl of boozy trifle ![](/icons/s/razz.gif) |

Silver skinned pickled onions.
Vol a Vonts - chicken mayo or white gunky mushrooms filling.
Chicken nuggets.
Mini cheese and tomato pizza.
And the only salmon we had was out of a tin, with loads of vinegar added to it. |

I've got to say, it looks like the buffet of the North was a lot better than those from the south, might have something to do with being industrial revolution places, but they are kind of like the ones from the Black Country ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

...and if you find it, you KNOW it's going to be good ! In addition to the usual sarnies, savoury eggs, sausage rolls and gala pie, cheese, salads etc you have their yummy
Indian and chinese buffet packs ! Dont knock em.. the quality has gone through the roof lately ! They also do
pasta and couscous salads, lobster, sushi and amazing buffet desserts. |

I'd agree. Having grown up with endless buffets at birthdays, christening, funerals, weddings etc., they have no clue about buffets down here! The last one didn't even have chicken nuggets and sweet chilli dip!! |

Salmon mousse shaped like a fish.
Home made coleslaw and potato salad.
French stick that's gone dry in the heat.
Raddishes.
Celery and salt.
Piccalilli.
Jelly in the shape of a rabbit.
Fairy cakes.

What's all this talk about whole salmon? Shipphams salmon paste in dried up bread was all we got. Sausage rolls,vol-au-vents,sliced ham and bridge rolls you buttered yourself. At my wedding we had jellied eels and seafood; I don't like either but my mother in law did the food. Fruit flan,black forest gattox and squirty cream for dessert. |

Children's party buffets were jam or dairy lee cheese spread sandwich triangles,Ritz biscuits,ready salted crisps,Tea cake marshmallows,iced ring biscuits,midget gems and fruit with jelly in flowery paper dishes with fluted edges. Posh people had French fancies. |
