What is a Chav. Do you think its a stereotypical term for anti social teenagers, is the term used to perceive elitism by other social groups. I use it as a term for people I think are rather coarse or vulgar. Its not necessarily a class thing, Id say Sarah Ferguson was a chav. Do we all have different ideas on what this term means. |

I think in basic terms the trait that best describes a chav is that they belong to an underclass, separated from the working classes by the fact they view work as an unnecessary evil and think its perfectly acceptable for the state to support them when they are otherwise fit and healthy enough to graft.
The style of someone's dress does not make them a chav, however certain garments do get referred to as "chavvy" as they seem to be those preferred by the chavs. Living on a council estate does not make anyone a chav either, its just unfortunate that these locations are where the majority of chavs live. Referring to anyone that fits these two profiles as a "chav" is a sweeping generalisation usually made by those with little imagination... |

Chav comes from the 16th century Old English word 'Chavalier'.
The Chavaliers were known for their hooded garb and brightly coloured trousers. They socialised in large groups and lived solely off the produce of Greggs or as it was known then Ye Olde Greggs. They were also renowned for inventing glue sniffing or as they called it; melted horse inhalation. |
