Another of mr wrights questions.
Are parents under pressure to come up with wild and wonderful names for their offspring ?
Dont think any of todays young parents are satisfied with john , jack and jenny ...etc.
And i quite like the old names my parents used  |

I like traditional names. For a little lad i love the names George and Henry
Working with the eldery though im not sure id call my daughter Margeret, Joyce, Marjorie or Joan..
However names like Jo, Amy and May are nice.
Not keen on the peaches, apples, blossoms, summers, alaska's etc.. bit too much for me. The child would have the piss taken surely...
although if everyone went for zaney names then the traditional names would be out of place...  |

A lot of the older names were biblical ,John ,Mathew .David .Rebecca etc. I think a lot of new names are driven by media ...i like the old ones as they have stood the test of time and the media ones wont .....i remember Zowie Bowie ,i thought at the time ..poor kid ,i know what will be on his first list of must does when he is old enough to realise lol |

I do sit and look amazed at some names i here on usa programmes.
Seem alot of women make them up from their own name and of the "baby daddy"
And my god.....some are strange.

I have an unusual first name, unusual for england anyhow as its an old welsh name. growing up as a shy child with a name that drew attention because it doesnt look how it sounds and vice versa was a pretty grim experience. |

I have absolutely no empirical evidence for this but I get the feeling people with unusual given names or unusual spellings of given names tend to feature more often than you'd expect in crime reports, either as the victim or the culprit. |

Never actually his real name. and Bowie and Angie never called him it. His name is Duncan. Duncan Jones.
Now a successful film director. Won some awards for Moon and is currently working on a film with Jake Gyllenhall |

my sons name is as old as time itself! when i named him it wasn't decided ahead of the birth...his daddy had one of those fantastical names for him and when he was born it just didn't sit right. i named him within seconds of seeing him for the first time and everyone laughed, even the housekeeper at the hospital, with the expectation that i'd change it before i got it registered.
knowing him now as a young boy, nothing suits him more and everyone agrees |

I have an unusual first name, which is also the title of a book...if I had a penny for everytime some said "oh like...?" I wouldn't need t work!
My children have traditional names, my middle daughter's name was made popular in song a few years ago - and people are always singing it to her, which makes her  too!
Years ago in church (you can tell that was yeaaaaaaaar sgo ) the pastor announced that his wife had just delivered of a baby daughter and they had called her Abigail. I thought that was such an awful, old fashioned name - well I was 13 - but I remember him saying it meant "father's joy" as their previous daughter was still born.
Fast forward 17 years, having buried our son the previous year, I awoke from my caesarian to see my husband cradling our new daughter. The look on his face as he looked at his new daugher is beyond my vocabulary to describe: I knew then that there was only one name for her: Abigail...father's joy just about sumed it up.  |

the good old british names are going down the drain pretty fast its sad to see..
i know my boys names if i ever have any, ok there not 100% british but i know the reason's behind them that make it speacial to me

He just did not look like the names we had 'fitted' him!!
Our daughter had a name before she was even delivered though... |

I on the other hand had one son and wanted "oliver" for him...
After my fave actor and bad boy oliver reed.
My dad begged me not to cuz his name was "stan"
So i reversed the name...instead of oliver james...he had james oliver |

There's almost certainly an element of that but I suspect that's not all it's about.
I hesitate to suggest it might be a class issue and citing examples usually only leads to disagreement but I wonder, for example, how many bairns called Kristofer are at Eton. |

My friend has called her son that - different spelling.
When my daughter's were in school the girls in their class all had made up names like Malikwa, D'esha, P'alika, Sheznaye'ah etc! |

My youngest boy was so selfish when shopping we had to get his things first then he would get bored and try to wander off while I was buying his siblings clothes. He would ignore me calling for him by his real name, so I yelled "Houston Clancey come back here!" Everyone turned to look at the poor kid who was called Houston Clancey and he went bright red he never played up much after that. |
