It seems like an ill advised move to me......
I would imagine some smokers who've already modified and restricted their intake to smoking the contents of a packet of ten will find the temptation of having a box of 20 readily to hand leads to increasing their intake.. .......

Ditto.
But you'll no longer be able to buy a pack less than 30g under the new laws and they're also banning menthol cigarettes and filter tips!

Always buy 50g anyway, it's cheaper than buying 2 25g packs. They don't do 12.5g ones anymore, to keep the price down to the £3 mark you only seem to get about 9g in them now.
As for menthol, yuk. |

The whole idea of this has not been thought out! No 10s...well that will encourage people to stop when they only bought 10s and now have to buy 20s...no menthol....well we know what the fag smugglers will be fetching in now and not selling them at a reduced price when they will be like rocking horse shit....now that word reminds me of the people who rubber stamped this

The new law states that all packs must contain a minimum of 20 cigs or 30g of loose tobacco by this time next year but expect to see it a lot earlier in smaller shops. Also by 2020 menthol will be banned completely. |

Or inject peppermint into the filter or very top of the baccy. most lite cigs have perforations around the top anyway |

"WTF they are banning menthol fags...ohh shoot me now
I'll just have to buy the dual ones "
As Ace says mints are the key, try the curiously strong ones (great for oral too ).
No filters - cigarette holders will make a comeback...

We are historically the only country in the western world to just accept every single law brought in. I was in France on the day that the law was brought in stating that all motor cyclists must wear hi viz jackets. Were any french bikers wearing them? Not many. They have the attitude that they cannot prosecute us all. It was and is the same for the smoking ban in many european countries, in the Greek islands I have seen armed security staff smoking inside airport terminals in recent years. |

It plays straight into the hands of the big pharmaceutical companies that dreamed up the TPD and pitched it to the European Parliament. |

"Thick as pig shit". Yes, you are.
It is brilliant move. And it's been VERY well thought out.
Speak to those who are dying from cancer or COPD caused by smoking, they'll often say:
"Smoking is killing me. There is nothing you can do for me now, but please stop young people from EVER starting to smoke"
Stopping selling cancer sticks in packs of 10, stopping menthol cigarettes is NOTHING to do with you. Neither is enforcing plain packaging. You are already addicted to one of the most addictive substances known to man because of the choices that you have made.
It is however ALL about removing the marketing ploys the tobacco industry uses to get young kids addicted to smoking - nice flavours, sexy brands and packs of 10 that they kids might be able to afford.
If you can't see beyond 'you', if you can't be bothered to even think of the broader issues about smoking.....well, words fail me. |

Hey, let's be positive. Let's agree to disagree.
Surely smoking is the joke dreamed up by the tobacco companies to maximise profits from sick people? Or did I miss something.
The TPD though is definitely NOT a joke.
FYI the EU and its member states signed the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in 2005, which aims to reduce the harm from tobacco. Each signatory is legally obliged to implement the provisions in this Treaty. Hardly something dreamed up by 'big pharma'. Actually if you stopped ranting and did some research, you might be better informed!

But probably not as bad as getting kids addicted to something that 50:50 will kill them and put what, £100 per month for 50 years in the pockets of the tobacco industry (?£60,000) for the privaledge.
Treating smokers like children is a small price to pay to stop even one child taking up smoking.

This rule has a proven track record of stopping young people from taking up the habit of smoking.
If you price them out of it they are less likely to take it up.
But you selfish addicts can carry on moaning as much as you like , you'll just have to buy a bigger fix now instead of the smaller fix you're used to.
If it stops a generation of addicts then it's a good thing right ?
Or do we want your children to endure the premature death that you are destined to ?

Actually many of the tobacco companies are behind people quitting or switching to vaping. The pharmaceutical companies are the biggest loosers because treating cancer and other smoking related illnesses makes them huge amounts of money. |

But bringing your child to swingers club wouldn't lead them into a life of addiction and health problems and ultimately a premature death. |

I'd prefer children not to smoke but over 99% of the sales would be to adults and children will get them if determined, whatever the pack size.
I'd prefer children were properly protected from air and other pollution. This kills and disables without any choice offered to those affected. Schools situated in areas that are so dangerous Mayors etc take no action.

Research seems to suggest otherwise.

The Republic of Ireland changed the law to make the minimum pack size 20 in 2007. Research in the run-up to the ban had suggested three-quarters of young people who smoked bought 10-packs.
The number of smokers in the 10-17-year-old age group fell from 21.2% in 1998 to 18.6% in 2002, 15.3% in 2006 and 12% in 2010.
If this trend continues then hardly any children will take up the habit before they are 17.
It has been a great success in Ireland and there is no reason to believe it won't be here.

I just for the life of me cannot see what even makes people want to start smoking.. It surely can't be the smell. Each to their own I guess I just hate people who smoke around children and the ones that smoke with children in the car just outright disgust me .
When you see kids smoking It does seem to be more young girls than boys ?? Anybody else noticed this ? Maybe it's because the girls tend to do less activity and more sitting round in groups ..? Who knows |

Stats do show that young girls are more likely to start smoking than boys. |

"The whole idea of this has not been thought out! No 10s...well that will encourage people to stop when they only bought 10s and now have to buy 20s...no menthol....well we know what the fag smugglers will be fetching in now and not selling them at a reduced price when they will be like rocking horse shit....now that word reminds me of the people who rubber stamped this
Thick as pig shit.
Words fail me to describe your thickness.
I have not said anywhere smoking is good...what I am saying is they are going the wrong way about it as people do not like being forced to change their ways.as you have said you will not stop and as you have fucked yourself up by smoking you attack me!
There are ways to stop the youngsters from smoking....but this is not the way
By making people buy larger amounts then they buy now....do you think one person will stop as they can't buy 10s..I think not. Do you think buying 20s will stop youngsters starting....I think not.
Research seems to suggest otherwise.

Yes the stats look good. But where I live most people on low incomes buy smuggled fags and baccy and a lot of these are fake! People and kids go to these "houses" and buy from them and with the packaging they will be easier to produce these fakes. Add to that they are stopping menthol fags but a lot of people only smoke these. They will be only available at these "houses" I still say it is a poorly thought out plan. Remember prohibition in America? I think education is the answer and not prohibition. |

I think more illegal cigarettes are sold in the uk than legal and this rule certainly won't reverse that trend.
I'm in favour of this new ruling though as it has been shown to work.
Children have been educated for years about the dangers of smoking and various governments have spent millions on advertising campaigns warning of the dangers but children continue to experiment.
If you make it unaffordable then it's proven that it makes it less attractive.
(they'll probably spend their money on balloons or glue now though, the little shits). |

Surely smuggled cigarettes are going to be much harder to get as the TPD is a Europe wide directive.
Article 20 has me confused though. Why are vapers being roped in with smokers?

I think it's ridiculous that Valera are being lumped in with cigarettes.
Many people have found these a very successful way of giving up.

I totally agree on vaping...just doesn't add up.
On the imported ciggies I think you will find they don't often come from the EU now as they are too expensive to mark up and sell on....they come from outside the EU or are counterfeited and that will continue after all this but the health risks will be worse due to the very low quality of tobbaco |

It wasn't the smell for me. I was 13, immature, all adults i knew smoked so we were grown up smoking.
I actually coughed my guts up smoking my first cig and was nearly sick but still it was the grown up thing to do so i smoked.
Oh and we wasn't paying for our cigs, we were stealing them. So no matter what they cost it didn't matter to us. |

I tried to quit fags for years using traditional methods. It wasn't until I bought a proper vaping set up that I was able to properly quit. In fact I haven't touched a stinky since an hour after buying the kit. Granted, I still vape but I make my own liquids and wrap my own coils so have saved an absolute fortune, plus I know exactly what I'm inhaling.
Article 20 is purely a move by big pharma so they can limit the money they'd have lost and continue to profit from cancer treatments. |
