Smokers...

Jump to: Newest in thread

The news on the radio today is that cigarette packaging is going to change to green packaging with pictures of the harm it does on them.

Whilst I totally understand that smoking is bad for you and we're all going to die... I really don't give a toss what's on the box. I'm not understanding what impact the authorities think it will have... if you're a smoker then you're a smoker and it's what's in the box that matters?

Any thoughts? Before the anti-smokers start... this isn't a lecture inducing thread... I'm just curious as to what difference it makes to the smokers - would you be more likely to stop smoking cause the box doesn't look pretty?

Ex smoker here and to be honest I find it ridiculous. I didn't start smoking because I saw a pretty box and thought ooo I must try that the colours are so enticing.

I really don't see what effect this will have on smokers or non smokers about to start there already hidden behind something so as not to be advertised so you have to of decided to buy a pack before you see a pack.

Don't quite understand the logic myself other then to keep the anti smoking police happy.

Not only packaging ... I believe they are also trying to phase out 10 boxes and small packs of tobacco ...

God knows what they hope to achieve ... I mean they tried the whole u can't have tobacco on public display anymore, so shops had to cover them.

It's not going to stop people.

I think it's just a case of the authorities being damned if they do and damned if they don't.....

Surely doing nothing would be as unacceptable as failing to make an effort to reminded people of the health risks of smoking at the point of sale.....

I'm an ex smoker now. I'd never have given a toss what's on the box when I smoked. What I might have cared about though if I'd have had a clue was how much I fucking stunk but not just me my house my car and everything about me reaked of it but I had no idea I couldn't smell it

It makes no difference to the die hard smokers, not even sure it will stop people starting in the first place. When I was a smoker the high prices just got me trawling all over the place to find the cheapest, which turned out to be either Spain or Japan. When a pack of Rothmans was about £7 in the UK was getting them for £1.25 inc postage from Japan.

The lady at the kiosk knew me and she use to check boxes before giving me them cos she knew some of the pics were too disturbing for me. i'd still smoke though.

I kind of stopped smoking and recently started again but I aim to Stop again by the end of the month.

If I remember correctly, I think the ttip trade agreement will reimburse the tobacco companies for losses caused by government regulation, so they might be on a win win situation anyhow, they get to cut down on fancy wrapping and still keep sales high.

I'm a cigar smoker myself and I've always been in favour of tobacco only being sold in specialists shops that just sell tobacco products

i've been trying to give up for a while now, really struggling to quit and sometimes i wish they'd just ban cigs altogether or at least make them really cheap so i'm not wasting so much money. its exploitation of addiction as far as i'm concerned now.

anyway i'm sure i won't give up unless i can't breathe and the damage has already been done, i acknowledge this.

I don't know why the government deem it necessary to tell me what mistakes I'm making, I never said to them that there was insufficient evidence to invade Iraq now did I.

£15 for a packet of fags, did no one stop to think of the knock on effects of that?

Organised criminals doing whatever it takes to bring in cheap fags from abroad,

Sections of society that put cigarettes before everything else are going to have further malnourished children

An increase in the manufacturing of fake cigarettes, containing God knows what

If they are telling us that it's to take the strain off the bus, u think they are getting it wrong again, because less people will smoke legally bought cigarettes, meaning less money, and more smoking related illnesses due to the shit that the unregulated fake cigarette trade, not to mention the extra police hours trying to deal with the beatings and killings associated with high profit margin criminal activity, and the poor children that are swept aside when the parents that won't stop smoking feed them poor quality food, if they feed them at all, social services are under enough stress as it is

There was one image that I did NOT understand at all, a man lying on a table with a cloth on his face - honestly, and I know this makes me appear terribly dim, but I did not get it at all, I thought it was someone on a sun bed...but it was meant to be someone on the mortician's slab...

It's a ridiculous waste of public money and not evidence based - as ever with conservative ideolgy.

We should have waited for more countries who may have been stupid enough to pursue and pay for it first. Or just only pursued costly public policy where there is evidence.

Yep. While we're at it lets ban sex too. We all know how dangerous that can be. And lets ban cars....they're fuck off dangerous. Oh bloody hell, I could go on......

People know the risks involved with all these activities. The packaging is not the reason why most people started smoking. It might help you decide which brand you want to smoke if you're young and impressionable, but it will make sod all difference to most smokers.

surely the best idea to put people off smoking would be to construct a packet that shoots Sharp spikes out of the side of it everytime you open it..or maybe put a small exploding dye capsule in each cigarette that covers your face with purple dye

Cars are dangerous but not addictive, sex can be addictive, but if done safely can improve fitness, burn calories, improve mental stimulation and feelings of euphoria etc.

We should ban sugar too and have Stevia or Xylitol in place of it, but the sugar lobby is way too powerful.

The health benefits would be immense!

There is no conclusive evidence and smoking is in decline in western countries anyway.

I might drive with pics of accidents to deter road accidents that would have been avoidable.

People become immune to images very quickly.

It's treating people like they are children. It will make no significant difference to smoking. Or people will buy imported fags with nicer packs and we'll get no tax.

They've nailed anyone who vapes too. I know of several shops that have already closed and a lot of manufacturers of e-liquid have said they're going to have to close once the regulations come into force.

Basically no eliquid over 20mg strength, eliqyid can only be sold in 10ml bottles, tanks can only hold 2ml of liquid unless pre-approved, the sale of nicotine for homemade liquid will be restricted to 20g per 100ml rather than the current 72g per 100ml.

This is all despite the Royal College of Nursing and British Medical Council approving vaping and recommending doctors start prescribing them as the preferred method of quitting smoking and that their research has proven that it's no more harmful than drinking a cup of tea.

Actually I doubt it.

Phillip Morris tried to sue Australia for plain packaging under similar legislation. The final appeal court decided that even bringing the case was a 'flagrant abuse of Phillip Morris's rights' and found against Phillip Morris.

I think the story is just another piece of scaremongering by the anti-TTIP crew.

A half story if ever I saw one. They both also said that the market needs regulating to ensure products were safe and to ensure that they didn't encourage non-smokers and kids to start vaping.

Smokers pay 4 times more into the economy, than they receive in medical care.

In fact smokers should be entitled to private health care.

They should be making every effort,to get us back on the street,so we can help subsidise, this ailing economy.

In fact, the country is lucky to have us.
