Why can't some drivers park?

I am out in the community working. Why do so many drivers not seem able to reverse into a space that's the size of three buses. Others park at angles so other cars can't fit in. And it's both sexes at fault. |

I would say I'm a pretty decent driver but any sort of parking apart from forward into a supermarket space and forward into a large gap between cars I'm shit lol |

That is fantastically put.
It actually is what the issue is.
If you just don't "get" the geometry aspect of it, your pretty much screwed.
With all false modesty aside, I'm bloody good at it and never understand why people drive into spaces.
Much easier to park accurately by reversing in and when you leave you can see where your going instead of backing out into moving traffic. |

Because practice makes perfect, and some people don't always get the opportunity to practice (and others like myself never had the confidence to try various parking maneuvers in my own car, which was different to my instructors).
But knowing that not everyone can perform precision maneuvers - why do people insist on pulling their cars right up to your bumper as close as possible? I thought I was going to have to call the police this morning to get them to move the car blocking me in where the 'expert' parallel parker had squeezed into a space that they really shouldn't have bothered with. |

I passed my test 25 years ago and parking wasn't in the test then. |

This: plus people just don't ever learn to do it properly, and then get out of practice.
It's really easy, once you understand a couple of " tricks" to it; which can't be described in words; has to be demonstrated. Same with reversing a trailer . |

I think reversing is a problem for many drivers. They find using the mirrors difficult and can't seem to steer unless they are looking at the steering wheel.
A lot of people just drive staring forward , they have no awareness of what's around them so when it comes to going backwards it totally confuses them. |

Yep, part practice, but a lot is our innate spatial awareness. We are all born with varying degrees of it.
Spatial awareness is actually part of a very robust and reliable child IQ test. It's part of who you are. If it's poor, you are going to really struggle at trying to improve it. Just like you can't ever really improve your IQ score, it's something that you're stuck with. You can improve knowledge but not the building blocks that make up your skills.
So they aren't doing it deliberately to piss you off. How about being grateful you were born with a good spatial awareness (through the lottery of genetics) rather than looking down on people who weren't handed the same skill set at birth that you were?
(My spatial awareness is really strong, but I'm shit at a lot of other things.) |

When I passed mine I'm sure that there were set manoeuvres (reverse around a corner, parallel park, 3 point turn and maybe another one) and the rest incorporated some but not all of them?
It was a long time ago so I may have it totally wrong |

I was never taught to parallel park. It's on my bucket list to get lessons to learn. I need a big space to attempt it and end up a good foot from the kerb.
But driving.....now I am a sensible cautious driver and think that's way more important |

We had reversing round a corner, a three point turn and an emergency stop. There were five  questions on the Highway Code and that was that.

If the car is legally parked, there's not a lot the police could do about it. If you were really lucky and they actually turned up, the most they could do, would be to knock on the owners door if it was close by and ask nicely that he/she moves so you could get out...
One of the tricks of reversing, is to use all of your mirrors and not fixate on one... |

A few influences -
Can't drive well generally
Don't respect others much/at all
Drivers from many countries with lower standards, pushing overall standards down
Didn't plan well, so rushing
Overall just too many drivers who should not be driving at all |

Surprised there are not more courses available on parking techniques.
I agree that spatial awareness is paramount but we have advanced driving instructors at work and if, during a drivers employment assessment, they feel they are a good driver but need to improve parking they get a 2 hour corse with an ADI to show them tips and tricks.
Drivers regularly feedback that the 'tips and tricks' they got were a revelation.
I'm lots of people find it a challenge would be interested in a 2 hour course for £60 or £70 if it meant they walk away a confident and capable parker.

You have to remember if you are driving in very high heels, flip flops, uggs etc, you can be prosecuted for not being in proper of a motor vehicle... |

My driving instructor kept contradicting himself when teaching me, I'd been driving before and parked my way, he said it was wrong, then the next lesson I'd Park how he wanted the time before, and that was wrong, he'd then proceed to tell me how it should be done, which is how I did my own way!!
I was one of the first to do the new test in 2010, only had to do a 3 point turn, which I was also told I did it wrong, but passed with 2 minors, both 50 foot away from the test centre |

Reverse park and parallel park is a piece of piss..

I had to reverse round a corner but no parking which always made me think it was a bit stupid. Give a 17 year old this massive hunk of metal, teach them to drive it but leave them with no idea how to park it. My Dad taught me how to do that. |

I'm fine with parking though because at the time I lived in a house with a designated space across the front of it meaning I had no choice but to parallel park every day. It really is a question of practising.
What *really* annoys me about parking however are the people who use up two spaces in supermarkets ... you either have to be shockingly bad at parking or very selfish to manage that.

We have both been guilty of this because we are fucked off with people smashing their doors into Frisky's car. You often see children throwing car doors open into other car, yet the parents do nothing to stop it... |

I can't drive forwards into spaces...i can only reverse park and parallel park. I passed my test in 1991 and they did parallel parking then....and my driving instructor Took me to a car park (nothing dodgy!) and taught me how to park in car park spaces, even though that wasn't part of the test. |

I love reverse parking and I'm very good at it. When I passed my test in 1998 I practiced all the maneuvers for a couple of weeks and got it down to an art. Went on an MOD driving course and was declared the best of the bunch. Yep.. I love driving. Probably the only thing I'm good at! |

After over 25 years of precision placing cars in showrooms I got pretty good at parking.
Mrs quite often gives me a funny look as if to say "are you serious" when I set up to park in a tight space.

Saw a cracker the other night in my local super-racket! I Renault Clio firstly trying to revers into a space the turns round and drives into the space which was ........ in the middle of the disabled area. Now before you say anything, the car which ended up straddling a bay was driven by a young girl of late teens and she was ferrying two of her friends! |

It's not illegal to ware flip flops high heels or any other "unusual ' foot ware. It's just advisable to ware something more suitable.
However if your feet become entangled or trapped between the pedals as a result, careless or dangerous driving could be considered. |

From memory, she had those knitted uggs and they got caught on the pedals causing the crash.
The judge stated that she must have realised that the boots were unsuitable for driving...

It's not illegal to ware flip flops high heels or any other "unusual ' foot ware. It's just advisable to ware something more suitable.

In Spain it is illegal to drive in flip flops or any other kind of footwear that doesn't go around your heel.
If you get stopped by Guardia Civil you will get a fine, although many Policia Local's will overlook it. |

I'm pretty sure neither of them will think it's utter tosh because they're suffering the consequences of an accident.
I don't own uggs but I do have boots that are similar and whilst they're not knitted, it wouldn't cross my mind not to drive my car wearing them. My footwear is never a consideration when I get in the car other than what's going to be comfy. My flip flops aren't the normal sort of flip flops... I figure they're not comfy at all but they're Fit Flops so the principal is the same, they're just chunky. I still wouldn't consider not wearing them in case I have some sort of freak accident as a result. |

There is only one reason and that is because they are lazy and inconsiderate.
All the other “reasons” are simply excuses.
There is nothing to stop any driver going to a quite car park or street and practicing for as many times as they need to accustom themselves with parking.
One could even use a quieter part of a supermarket car park and reverse park into the bays a few times every time they go shopping if need be.
Learning to drive does not stop with the driving test, in fact these days learning to drive starts with the test as learners are simply taught to pass a test not how to drive.
It is time the rules of the driving test were changed to require a 6 month gap between tests as it used to be to allow road time between tests rather than simply allowing bad drivers the chance of passing under the law of averages.
We would even suggest that all learners should be required to carry and keep a log book of their driving experience if they fail the examiner should then note in the book their weaknesses which they would then have to prove they had practiced before the next test.

Exactly Garry couple . They need to more stricter . D amount of people that I've seen that suposedly passed their test , I don't know how they did cos d way they were driving they had to have given money to d instructor . |

if you drive from a young age and drive large cars or like myself a hilux, parking becomes natural even when towing a trailer, as many have said, just needs practice
The new "C" class merc I am getting actually parks itself and its not a "gimmick" I was shocked to find it can easily park spot on between two cars as demonstrated in the test drive |

It matters for one very simple and important reason visibility.
If you are reversing out of a restricted space you cannot see if anything is coming towards you and any vehicle coming towards you has restricted visibility of you.
If you drive out forwards you have a wider range of visibility therefore it is a safer manoeuvre

Inconsiderate parking near the station pisses me off...
Residents and commuters...
A driveway, 2 spaces, driveway, 2 spaces etc for the whole road, yet people insist in parking in the middle taking up two spaces...
I'm thinking of printing off some notes, to let them know they are being twats... |
